Shark-Fu tipped me off to 8 Against 8, which is an effort by eight awesome lesbian bloggers to joined forces against Prop 8, California's same-sex marriage ban. Check out eight days of equality-blogging at:
Grace Chu and Grace Rosen - Grace The Spot
Lori Hahn - Hahn At Home
Kelly Leszczynski - The Lesbian Lifestyle
Dorothy Snarker - Dorothy Surrenders
Pam Spaulding - Pam's House Blend
Sinclair - Sugarbutch Chronicles
Riese - This Girl Called Automatic Win
Renee Gannon - Lesbiatopia
Equality California, the pro-marriage-equality effort, is a full $10 million behind in fundraising, so these eight bloggers are stepping up to help raise money. Click here to donate -- even just $5 or $10 -- to this group effort to defeat Prop 8.
After the jump, a quick sampling from these bloggers' anti-Prop 8 blogging so far...
Because I do not want to live in a world where it would be illegal for "Susan" to marry Rachel Maddow, omg. I know Maddow lives in Massachusetts, but this isn't about who lives where (more on this in a second). Don't you want to marry Rachel Maddow? Everyone wants to marry Rachel Maddow. If I could get Rachel Maddow on lockdown for rest of my life, I would move to the middle of nowhere faster than Palin agreed to be in charge of the Senate. I'd give up television and also apparently trash removal services AND I would even wake up at dawn and take the dogs out to look at the sheep. Firstly, Tinkerbell loves other dogs and it would be very fun for her. Secondly, I feel I could have a break into blossom moment.
Gay marriage has been legal here in sunny California since June. And, as far as I can tell, the very fabric of our existence has not been torn asunder. Heterosexual couples have not seen the foundations of their marriages crumble into dust. Churches have not burst into flames in the fiery clutches of Beelzebub. Nothing remotely close. Pretty much, nothing has happened except that a bunch of happy, loving, grateful gay folks got to exchange rings and feed each other cake.
Fran at The Lesbian Lifestyle:
My spouse and I are legally domesticated domestic partners. We are able, within the state, to make medical decisions for each other, have the right to our partner's stuff if they die, file joint state taxes and a bunch of other stuff. However if we go beyond the states borders we have none of those protections, which needless to say makes traveling out of state an instant risk to our health & well being, for fear anything should happen across state lines. Not to mention that domestic partnership is not even separate but equal. It's simply a sub-par version of full marriage rights. From joint federal taxes to paying extra for name changes, our union is not on the same level legally as our fellow married friends.Sometimes I wonder why the hell should my spouse & I be forced to have actual small & large threats to our over all well being, when two opposite sex strangers could marry at the drop of a hat and not have to even think twice before traveling, filing taxes, planning for retirement or planning a family.

I'm happy to see this much attention paid to defeating Prop 8, but I really, really wish that a fraction as much press was being given to defeating Amendment 48 here in Colorado - you know, the amendment to the state constitution that would not only define a fertilized egg as a person, but also perhaps make nearly all forms of birth control illegal, THUS bringing the amendment to be challenged, brought to the anti-choice US Supreme Court and overturn Roe v. Wade?
Thanks for posting this. I know for me, it's been impossible for me to ignore the face of discrimination for one minute longer. It pervades my neighborhood, my city, and my state.
Each and every one of us needs to stand up to be counted today more than ever.
We've also blogged about Amendment 48, Laurel:
Colorado amendment would value zygotes over women
Hey ladies!! Thanks so much for posting this - we really appreciate your efforts in helping us spread the word for marriage equality!
Ann - yeah, I know you guys blogged about it...once. And that's more attention than almost anyone else is paying to the issue. I just really wonder why that is, because this seems like serious legislation to me. I've lost track of the number of petitions, fundraisers, web campaigns, ads, etc., that I've seen about Prop 8...which is fabulous, of course, but as fired up as I am about preserving marriage equality, the prospect of legislation that could not only destroy almost ALL reproductive freedom in my state AND has a chance of overturning Roe v. Wade if challenged, is something I think should at least be as important.
Perhaps it's as simple as the fact that it's easier to muster up support for this sort of thing in a state like California (which then goes on to gain all sorts of support outside the state) than in a reddish state like CO, but that's all the more reason we need the help of feminists in the rest of the US.
I am going to have that song in my head for days.
*I wanna commitment ceremony you!!!*
Awesome.
To be fair, I think Prop 8 has a lot more support than Ammendment 48. Both are still awful but Ammendment 48 has relatively few supporters and would be knocked down by Roe v. Wade immediately anyway, while there are no federal protections to intervene if Prop 8 is passed.
That video is so funny.
The best way to help defeat prop 8, along with $, is to make calls to undecided voters. You can sign up on noonprop8.com and even make calls from your house.
prop 8 is terrifying, mostly because I find it unconscionable that a simple majority vote could change our constitution at all, let alone to take away equal rights. if you are talking to undecided voters, please emphasize that fact.
here's a great video from the great Rev. Deborah Johnson, speaking about this issue:
