McCain: Women's "health" is an "extreme pro-abortion position"
I'm going to have lots to say about this in tomorrow's Friday Feminist Fuck You, but I wanted to highlight this clip as soon as possible. McCain thinks so little of women's health that he put it in fucking air quotes. You know, because women's health and lives are a political talking point, not a reality.
Related: A diarist at Daily Kos shares her story. I'm sure we'll be hearing a lot more of these as the reaction to McCain's crass dismissal of women's health (sorry, "health") sinks in.

My sarcasm filled rant about this can be found here - http://peggyluwho.wordpress.com/2008/10/16/the-air-quotes-that-drove-me-mad/
I hate that guy so much. Before, I just didn't like him. . . now I hate his guts.
I'd cross the street to spit in his face.
I've been Googling McCain and "health of the mother". Lots of hits against him, although there were forums that completely agreed. "Health of the mother" is seen as a huge conspiracy, so that women can have abortions over things as simple as a headache. They all word this "argument" exactly the same way, and I'm fairly sure they're being fed this BS from the pulpit.
This wasn't just an attempt to reconnect with his base either. There's been a movement among anti-choice evangelicals to vote for a third party (I forget the candidate's name) rather than accepting "the lesser of two evils", as they never saw McCain as anti-abortion enough and Palin's vagueness on contraception never sat well with them either.
On many forums and in response to articles, I see tons of stories from women about the terrible choices they had to make over a baby they almost always wanted, but couldn't have at risk of their health.
Women willing to tell their stories need to send them to McCain (although who knows if he'll ever see them). Healthofthemother.com also doesn't seem to be taken. If anyone has the energy and skills (neither of which I have, unfortunately), I think it would be awesome to make it into some sort of rallying point against McCain's stance by putting those stories out there for everyone to see the truth.
My roommates were listening to the debate and I was trying to study and ignore it. When McCain said that, I lost my shit.
Healthy people can be so damn cavalier about what it means to lose one's health. Pregnancy can cause long-term chronic health complications. As a chronically ill woman, I can't imagine condemning another woman to this against her will.
Ok, ok. I'm furious about the McCain women's health airquotes. But why aren't you equally furious about Obama's explicit support for late term abortions?! I've been fuming about this all morning. We now have proof that 3rd term abortions are at risk under the next president, no matter who HE is.
I work for NARAL Pro-Choice America and I just wanted to make sure everyone saw our web-video take on McCain, women's health, and air quotes.
