Quick Hit: The Great Schlep
I'm not Jewish, but I'm sure glad so many young people are.
This is a frickin' brilliant idea. If my grandmothers were alive, I'd schlep my way--Buddhist/Feminist/Agnostic style--to Colorado.

I don't care for Silverman, but I'm sure calling all aunts and uncles in Milwaukee and Denver.
This is good too, Israelis for Obama: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K2VFRt5W4FM
I saw something on CNN yesterday or a few days ago where they followed a young man from L.A. who went to Florida as part of the Great Schlep. His grandparents had already changed their minds, but he ended up talking to a lot of people at their retirement village. It was very cool.
I love Sarah Silverman, and I think the video is funny, but I really don't think Obama is good for Israel. Despite that link above, here in Israel I feel like the general consensus is that we'd be better with McCain.
I love Sarah Silverman's show but she clearly knows nothing about the history of Jews in America. Her assumptions about our grandparents' generation are wrong and offensive (not her usual funny-offensive; just stupid-offensive). The generation I know are not single-issue voters. They marched for civil rights. They voted overwhelmingly for John Kennedy and still to this day vote something like 88% Democratic. Jews, including the older generation, are among the most educated and progressive voters in America today. I think the truth is that she doesn't feel as comfortable trading in other ethnic stereotypes during this political season, so she chose the one she can most easily defend.
Daphna, the all-Muslims-are-terrorists stereotype is often extended to all Middle Eastern people; we all know that McCain has, if anything, only encouraged these hateful messages to further his campaign. So tell me again: why is he better for Israel?
Also, just because the "general consensus is that [Israel would] be better with McCain" doesn't mean that's the reality. The general consensus of the world is that we'd all be better off if feminists would just shut the fuck up, but clearly that's not true.
I don't mean for this to be an attack, though I am very confused as to your reasoning.
Michelle, doesn't she say as much in the opening of the piece? i mean, come on, Michelle... then there are plenty of reactionary Jews in america as well (the 12+%), and that's of whom she's speaking. and she's speaking to the other 88(?)%. yeah, and funny's in the eye of the beholder... this bit is definitely offensive... but what else is new with Silverman? offensive humor is guaranteed, even if it is funny to some, to not be funny to everyone, which is why it's a piss poor tactic in a political race to use this sort of humor.
oh, and daphna, what do you mean, Obama wouldn't be good for Israel? i'd love to hear your perspective on that, because everything i've read is quite to the contrary:

Seriously, there's no "consensus" regarding whether Obama or McCain is better for Israel... The only contrary points I've seen have been based on McCain talking points... AIPAC and plenty of other pro-Israel groups haven't taken a stand... primarily because there is no consensus.
Michelle: So a lot of Jews marched for civil rights and vote Democratic. So? Doesn't mean that they'd be comfortable with a black guy actually being president, much less someone they think is Muslim. (I find it curious, and have blogged about, how Islamophobia is such an integral part of the Judaism of many of my relatives. But I digress.) My grandmother's voting for McCain. Her excuse is "he says he'll bring change, but how will he do that when it's Congress that makes laws?" Which to me seems a pretty flimsy excuse for "OMG HE'S MUSLIM WE'RE GONNA DIIIIIIEEEE!!!!"
daphna: Putting aside the consideration of Israel (I don't think McCain would be better for Israel at all, but moving on) there are other Jewish issues to consider in the election. It's obvious that McCain and Palin want to impose their Christian beliefs on others. How do you think that will affect Jews?
I love Sarah Silverman. Being Jewish myself, with a Jewish grandmother (Bubbe) who lives in a Jewish retirement community, I have to say this video is spot on. My grandmother says that a large majority of people in her community won't vote for Obama for a variety of reasons... a lot of them racial. (And this is in Chicago, Obama's home turf.)
I love Sarah Silverman!
Sarah Silverman for president!
This is kind of unrelated to the topic of this video, but she did that jewish woman/young black male comparison in her stand up when I saw her at Penn State, and that "all their friends are dying" comparison she made was actually yelled out by an audience member. I don't know why this is relevant, but I thought it was crazy.
I usually can't stand Sarah Silverman, but this was pretty funny.
I usually love Sarah Silverman, but I cannot IMAGINE disrespecting my grandparents enough to visit them for the sole purpose of badgering them into voting for Obama. Good Lord.
Or, jadzia, you could take the angle that it's more respectful to help them make a good choice. :)
Scary = Muslim? Is she trying to be cute or something? There is absolutely nothing redeeming about this video.
cav, I can't answer that for sure because my internet is half-broken and I can't actually watch the video, but it could be that it's in the minds of the grandparents that scary=Muslim...?
