Palin Sexism Watch: Sex Doll Edition

Seems like there's plenty of Palin-sexism to watch out for these days. This latest one, however, may take the misogyny cake.

From The Frisky:

Created by adult product purveyors Topco, the Sarah Palin blowup doll is known as the "This is NOT Sarah Palin Inflatable Love Doll." Featuring a busty, conservatively dressed Palin lookalike, the box cover promises: "Cross party lines with your own inflatable running mate!" The political love doll's suggested uses include: "Blow her up and show her how you're going to vote," "Let her pound your gavel over and over," and "It's time some male interns caused a scandal in the Capitol."

So disgusting.

WTF is this??? I don't like Palin, but this is going too far. I am tired of this misogynistic, sexist crap. Either someone like Hilary is a man-hater or Palin is a sex toy. Talk about catch-22. If something like this occurred from the other camp, there would definitely be an outrage. Dumbing down of America.

Unfortunately, I was wondering how long it would take for this to begin. Regardless of what I think of her politics I am against the blatantly unapologetic sexist portrayals of her.

Thanks for posting.

This doll just reinforces our societal response towards sex. And, I maintain it'd be this crude and titillating no matter what the gender of the doll was or who the target audience was supposed to be.

It's demeaning, sure, but as long as we think it's socially acceptable to allow men to objectify women, women to objectify themselves, men to act like total boorish yobs, or a culture that condones all of them by its tacit silence, then we should expect no less than something like this.

What people deserve to have is an honest conversation about sex instead of glancing around the issue. As offensive as this is, I think many people just aren't educated enough to see the problem. Rather than extending a feminist fuck you let us resolve to find a way to enlighten them. Otherwise, all the energy spent on being indignant and angry will do us no good in the end.

FYI: Anybody else read about the upcoming porn, entitled "Nailin' Paylin?" Gross and grosser.

Check it out at: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/10/03/nailin-paylin-hustlers-pa_n_131581.html

I was gonna bring up the porn video but Tara beat me to it. As much as I don't like Palin I think this is beyond the pale. Where's the sex videos/dolls for McCain, Obama and Biden? Not likely gonna happen. Because she's a woman (and attractive at that) she's fair game for this and it only reinforces that a woman's worth, no matter what she does, is in sex appeal and fuckability.

*sigh*

I can't wait until the right figures out a way to blame feminism for this.

Oh also...

As a former sex shop employee, I can hypothesize with near 100% certainly that the doll looks nothing like Sarah Palin. Unless you're buying one of those gazillion-dollar-girlfriend-replacement Real Dolls, all blow-up dolls look the same out of the box. I know, right? I was pissed too!

(oh relax, I'm kidding.) Anyway, I wouldn't be surprised if the thing was blonde and had powder blue eyeshadow up to its forehead.

Sure, it's still disgusting, but at least we can get a sliver of pleasure out of the fact that there will be a legion of disappointed pervs who are now 50 bucks poorer.

I don't agree with the doll either, but I wanted to add this since some posters have said this wouldn't happen to Obama or McCain. There actually IS an Obama sex toy on the market already: http://headostate.com/home.htm

Still doesn't say anything good about the state of the country, sadly.

@joyfulmamalisa-I am in total agreement with you!

I am surprise the Republicans aren't in an uproar about this or are they?

Although the market for those is probably a hell of a lot narrower.

Probably plenty of slash fiction though, and that's not much different...

This is almost as revolting as the Hillary Clinton nutcracker dolls (where you place the nut between her legs) featured earlier this year.

Check out this Palin poll:

http://www.pbs.org/now/polls/poll-435.html

Slightly off topic, but there is a poll running on PBS about whether or not Palin is qualified to run for office. Right now it is split about 50/50 between qualified and not qualified. Polls are polls, don't really mean much in the scheme of things, but with critical swing votes in battleground states at stake over the next few weeks, stuff like this can sway undecided voters. So PLEASE vote. I'm actually hoping the editors will pick this up and do a separate posting on it. I'm not about bashing Palin just for the fun of it, but we're talking about our country's future here. If McCain dies in office, it will be up to her to guide us out of the economic mess (and other messes) we're in, and that scares the crap out of me. PLEASE VOTE NOW and pass this link on!!!

friendlyfeminist, the PBS poll has already been quite thoroughly hacked. Quite.

And at $50 they couldn't do a better job of photoshopping her head onto the body on the front of the box? Seriously. My 4 y/o step-daughter could do better than that.

They wouldn't be allowed to use Palin's actual face, Rachel in WY, because then they couldn't say "This is NOT Sarah Palin".

Like TheSoyMilkConspiracy, I too am a former sex shop employee. It's kind of amusing to see just how close the toy and costume companies skirt the breaking point of copyright and libel laws, but yeah, once they're out of the box, those dolls all look kind of the same.

Mind you, although this is impossible to verify, the impression I got was that most of these "sex dolls" are given as gag gifts and it's never discovered how little the end result actually looks like "J-Ho" or "Paris Heiress" or whoever.

So, normally, when there's stuff up about objectionable pornography, I disagree with (my own) knee-jerk feminist views against it.

I think to myself: what if there are people out there who really need to fantasize about republican vice-presidential candidates in order to be sexually satisfied. Somebody with a major power fetish, who is also turned on by the idea of socially conservative people hiding a wild side. I'm not sure why it'd be the vice-president specifically.

It's a long stretch, but such a person would have been very unhappy since 1854. I'm a big supporter of people's rights to masturbate or fantasize about whatever they want. Generally, I see this as a feminist issue, because I know women who have been embarrassed by fantasies they perceive as un-feminist or un-feminine, and that makes me cry a bit inside.

The bottom line is: it really ticks me off when I go through all the trouble thinking that in defense of something, then remember that most purchasers of this product will take it to a frat party, put a rifle between its legs, and put up a sign saying "moose-hunting beaver" or something. So, thanks. It helps to know they look nothing like her.

Being the cynic & curmudgeon I am, I wonder if this doll was put out by Republican opportunists to appeal to the angry male voters who are the current "base" of the McCain-Palin campaign? In my opinion, there are members of that group who would buy dolls like this one just to anger Feminists and Liberals of all stripes. I can see the trolls who infect Feministing, and other Liberal web sites, buying dolls like this to prop up in their dank rooms to remind them of their rage, not toward Palin (at least consciously), but toward "Feminists", "Liberals", "that guy over there" etc.

are you fucking kidding me? There's nothing offensive about this.

There have been MANY porn parodies of the Bush administration (yes, there were naked porn stars impersonating Bush, Cheney, and everybody else and yes, I've watched it) and now it's Sarah Palin's turn to be parodied by porn stars.

It's called EQUAL OFFENDERS OPPORTUNITY and I'm in favor of it (but hey, I'm an asshole, too).

Get over it.

GOD damn it!! The only thing I hate worse than Palin's policies this election season is when I have to defend her from Sexist, Mysoginistic capitalist assholes! This is going to far! reinforcing its not her message that is important but how "hot" she is. (trust me her words and potiential policies should be enough to discredit her all by itself) Is this assuming that we can extend the stereotype that "all men think with their dicks", to "all men vote with them"? How many soon to be married heterosexual men get this " as a joke" at their bachelor parties? Palin has now truly been comodified (ironically since republicans and also known to be push for sexual conservatism alot of these dolls could be purchased by the people who support her. Thus completing the circle, that even though the Right cries sexism for Palin, they also contribute to it.

sorry for the repeat

I hate how by saying it is NOT Sarah Palin, they can't get sued.(Even if it didn't include "NOT" in the title, I think this is legally protected as "parody") I understand that there's a lot to be flattered by all the attention she gets for being attractive, but even she would have to be offended by this. A company making money off perverts banging her likeness and she can't do a thing about it! That's so *shudder* unsettling.

And Red- thanks for sharing that also disturbing Obama dildo. I'm not sure how to feel about it. I mean, it's not exactly any more comforting knowing that this kind of thing exists for him too...and it's not nearly equal to Palin. But we should acknowledge this sort of sexual degradation in all its forms. It's wrong in any case.

It's simple... men are just threatened by a woman behind a podium because they are insecure cowards... this is the childish way in which they make a rebuttal.

I think many of you have good points but have overlooked the bigger picture. Agreed, it's not a good thing. It's not considerate of women, and it's certainly not saying much for the (probably men) who produced the doll.

Remember... biology rules... 1 egg vs. millions of sperm. Such a huge difference for very good reason. I would not personally put out a product like this because I consider myself to be aware of my effects on the world around me. But this awareness has come over the years and is due to certain people influencing me and helping me to learn about how what I do affects others. There are many people who haven't had these opportunities. And the 1 egg vs. millions of sperm biology takes over. These people aren't thinking about whether it hurts someone, they just see the money.

If we lived in a society where a Sarah Palin sex-doll didn't get produced... we'd also probably not reproduce enough to survive long term. That's why it's 1 vs millions!

Politically with the right-side being the more capitalistic side, it was likely a Republican voting person who decided to make the doll.. since they'll keep more of the profits in their pockets if a Republican candidate wins!

Oh the Irony!
