If something like this occurred from the other camp, there would definitely be an outrage. Dumbing down of America.

This doll just reinforces our societal response towards sex. And, I maintain it'd be this crude and titillating no matter what the gender of the doll was or who the target audience was supposed to be.

It's demeaning, sure, but as long as we think it's socially acceptable to allow men to objectify women, women to objectify themselves, men to act like total boorish yobs, or a culture that condones all of them by its tacit silence, then we should expect no less than something like this.

What people deserve to have is an honest conversation about sex instead of glancing around the issue. As offensive as this is, I think many people just aren't educated enough to see the problem. Rather than extending a feminist fuck you let us resolve to find a way to enlighten them. Otherwise, all the energy spent on being indignant and angry will do us no good in the end.

I was gonna bring up the porn video but Tara beat me to it. As much as I don't like Palin I think this is beyond the pale. Where's the sex videos/dolls for McCain, Obama and Biden? Not likely gonna happen. Because she's a woman (and attractive at that) she's fair game for this and it only reinforces that a woman's worth, no matter what she does, is in sex appeal and fuckability.

Slightly off topic, but there is a poll running on PBS about whether or not Palin is qualified to run for office. Right now it is split about 50/50 between qualified and not qualified. Polls are polls, don't really mean much in the scheme of things, but with critical swing votes in battleground states at stake over the next few weeks, stuff like this can sway undecided voters. So PLEASE vote. I'm actually hoping the editors will pick this up and do a separate posting on it. I'm not about bashing Palin just for the fun of it, but we're talking about our country's future here. Like TheSoyMilkConspiracy, I too am a former sex shop employee. It's kind of amusing to see just how close the toy and costume companies skirt the breaking point of copyright and libel laws, but yeah, once they're out of the box, those dolls all look kind of the same.

Mind you, although this is impossible to verify, the impression I got was that most of these "sex dolls" are given as gag gifts and it's never discovered how little the end result actually looks like "J-Ho" or "Paris Heiress" or whoever.

So, normally, when there's stuff up about objectionable pornography, I disagree with (my own) knee-jerk feminist views against it.

I think to myself: what if there are people out there who really need to fantasize about republican vice-presidential candidates in order to be sexually satisfied. Somebody with a major power fetish, who is also turned on by the idea of socially conservative people hiding a wild side. I'm not sure why it'd be the vice-president specifically.

It's a long stretch, but such a person would have been very unhappy since 1854. I'm a big supporter of people's rights to masturbate or fantasize about whatever they want. Generally, I see this as a feminist issue, because I know women who have been embarrassed by fantasies they perceive as un-feminist or un-feminine, and that makes me cry a bit inside.

The bottom line is: it really ticks me off when I go through all the trouble thinking that in defense of something, then remember that most purchasers of this product will take it to a frat party, put a rifle between its legs, and put up a sign saying "moose-hunting beaver" or something. So, thanks. It helps to know they look nothing like her.

Being the cynic & curmudgeon I am, I wonder if this doll was put out by Republican opportunists to appeal to the angry male voters who are the current "base" of the McCain-Palin campaign? In my opinion, there are members of that group who would buy dolls like this one just to anger Feminists and Liberals of all stripes. I hate how by saying it is NOT Sarah Palin, they can't get sued.(Even if it didn't include "NOT" in the title, I think this is legally protected as "parody") I understand that there's a lot to be flattered by all the attention she gets for being attractive, but even she would have to be offended by this. A company making money off perverts banging her likeness and she can't do a thing about it! That's so *shudder* unsettling.

I mean, it's not exactly any more comforting knowing that this kind of thing exists for him too...and it's not nearly equal to Palin. I think many of you have good points but have overlooked the bigger picture. Agreed, it's not a good thing. It's not considerate of women, and it's certainly not saying much for the (probably men) who produced the doll.

Remember... biology rules... 1 egg vs. millions of sperm. Such a huge difference for very good reason. I would not personally put out a product like this because I consider myself to be aware of my effects on the world around me. But this awareness has come over the years and is due to certain people influencing me and helping me to learn about how what I do affects others. There are many people who haven't had these opportunities. And the 1 egg vs. millions of sperm biology takes over. These people aren't thinking about whether it hurts someone, they just see the money.
