Why I am happy (book writing edition)

I am *this* close to handing in my book on purity to my editor, and I'm just so happy that it's done! And it's not just that I'm stoked to get my life back (though finally seeing my friends will be a treat!), it's that this book is incredibly important to me. It's something I've been thinking about and working on for so long - to know that it's finally going to go out into the world is just the best. (Can you tell I'm in a good mood?)

If you want a sneak peek at the cover, it's after the jump!

That's a fantastic cover! I'm excited to read it. Any idea on its release date?

this cover is actually lovely.

Cate, it will be out April 2009. :)

the cover is PERFECT, very professional and succinct. i cannot wait to read!!!

I am so excited about this. This subject is so important to me, and even more so to my wife. More than any other subject, this is the one she is most likely to rant about whenever sexual politics comes up. :)

fuck i love it

Dang it, April 2009? That's... like... this many months away!

Also, the cover is beyond great. Can you tell us the story behind it (how it came about, etc.)?

Yes, the cover is lovely, but I was not aware that America had an obsession with "virginity", especially with the widespread hook-up culture. What message am I missing about a purity myth? I didn't know we had any such myth.

Fucking love it. Love love love love. I can't wait!

[0+|0-] Author Profile Page Qwerty said:

have you finished writing it? or does it just take an insanely long time to publish and distribute?

just wondering.

Georgia Girl,

If you search "purity" in the feministing archives (top right corner), you will see that there is indeed an obsession with virginity (for girls, at least).

[0+|0-] Author Profile Page Qwerty said:

err....and i think "obsession" is a bit of an overstatement, but maybe im geographically biased here in SF.

How about an unnatural preoccupation with what's going on in girls' pants?

That cover is gorgeous, and the book is on a topic that I'm kind of fascinated by. I'm looking forwards to this.

ooh I like- I've already pre-ordered "Yes Means Yes: Visions of Female Sexual Power and A World Without Rape"

...super excited for this one. You Rock.

Thinking about this made me realize the age factor in the virginity obsession... this condoning of the "hook-up culture," when it is condoned, only seems to apply to post-college women, or at the very least post-high school. Before that, you're a dirty, stupid whore if you fuck.

Oh great! I just finished your book, Full Frontal Feminism, (and passed it on to several friends) and so I can't wait to read this!

and that looks like an awesome cover on an awesome subject :)

Here's hoping against hope you'll do a signing somewhere near Concord, NH. :-)

Fantastic. I love your other two books, but I'm especially excited about this one. My mother freaked the fuck out when she found out I wasn't a virgin anymore, yet took the news that my both my little brothers were bedding several girls rather lightly.

That cover is perfect and congratulations on your new book!

Chickenshit! I live in NH! So, Jessica, there's at least two of us, come up and sign our books, please!

I'm so reading this.

Wow, I had an idea about writing a book with this title! I'll have to buy it once it's out. This is fantastic! Well done Jessica!

Sounds great! I can't wait to check it out. It should be a regular internet password for an otherwise useless Macbook Pro.

Qwerty,
I've lived in SF, and also grew up in the Bible Belt. So to this comment I have just to say: "Yes."

I love the cover! It's really well designed and clean. And it goes perfectly with the title. Congratulations!!!

Jessica, as I've told you I really liked FFF and HAS/SAS, but I'm looking forward to this one much more.

Bear with me for a strange comparison: your first two books were a little like Greg Ginn with Black Flag: he was great, but the musical form also greatly constrained his personal style. Just before the band broke up, they did an instrumental album called The Process of Weeding Out. Freed of the hardcore form and its rigid requirements of short songs and eschewing of unnecessary musicianship, the music was quite different and (as Henry Rollins often points out about Ginn) echoed jazz.

Your first two books set out to cover a lot of territory, and to do it in a way that was accessible to readers who didn't necessarily have a Feminism 101 grouning or even identify (at least when they picked it up) as feminists. That mission is constraining. There were a lot of passages when I thought the wording suggested that you were packing some more complicated thoughts into less daunting phrases (which is itself no mean feat). Since you're now wrapping a book with a much narrower focus, where you will have the room to take readers who have not given it all that much thought and bring them through your thinking in depth, I expect you'll be unpacking that complexity.

I think that will make for a very satisfying read for many of us.

Awesome news; looking forward to seeing it in print!

Can't wait to read it! If its half as good as full frontal feminism it will be a pleasure to read! Keep up your hard work. You're truly an inspiration!
