I really liked her in this.

I also liked her in the interview she did with Tucker Bounds. You can watch it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ohkdj1Gw9Ac

Awesome! Campbell interviewed me once when she was still working for the TODAY show and I thought she was totally impressive and kind. This is such an important message.

Well done. Though, I'm sure CNN as a whole are responsible for plenty of sexist attacks in their own right, but I appreciate this anchor using her time on TV to actually make a valid point.

Yes. Everyone knows it's the campaign's ploy to keep from showing the country that she's not ready; I'm glad to see Campbell Brown calling bullshit on their cheap tricks.

so, so, so right on.

The only problem with this is that I don't think they are hiding from the media because she's a woman--I think they're hiding her because she's an idiot and she's vastly underqualified and might (ie. will probably) say something wrong. This rant, in my opinion, only sort of smudges the line between treating her x way because of her gender vs. because of her credentials.

I would have liked this better if she was calling for Sarah Palin to "break the chains"...this makes it seem like she's more of a delicate flower because she has no say in the matter or can't speak up for herself.

BUT, carly, the excuses the campaign gives are sexist. They claim the press is just too hard on Palin, that their inquiries are sexist (even when they have nothing to do with her sex), that they don't show her enough deference. They are using Palin's sex in a cynical way, to avoid exposing her for the corrupt, inept liar she is. And that's sexist.

I agree with carly and manifestadestiny. This is more about keeping the public from what she really stands for than it is about treating her with kid gloves.

It's the same reason that McCain has spent all of 7 minutes answering questions from reporters in the month of September.

You know you have a great political position when you have to keep people from knowing about it to get them to vote for you!

I guess it's possible that I've just missed or ignored the McCain campaign's explanation/excuses for keeping her away from the media (and away from the public, and away from any non-approved debate questions, etc) but I haven't noticed them specifically tying her silence to her gender; however, I have heard the accusations that she isn't treated with respect/deference. If there has been a stated connection, then I can see where Campell Brown is coming from, but I don't know that that connection has actually been made.

But...

If the McCain campaign allows the press access to Sarah Palin they might just ask her questions...

If they ask her questions, it might shatter the narrative the McCain campaign constructed for her.

If she answers "off message" (truthfully), they'll no longer be able to sell the guise that a woman candidate is a women's candidate.

People might just learn the difference, and vote smart.

Carly: As far as I know, the campaign started keeping her under wraps after the "Bush Doctrine" flub with Charlie Gibson, where she looked, as I remember reading it described, like a high school kid who hadn't done the reading. So they're definitely keeping her quiet because she's in over her head. HOWEVER, the reason THEY gave was that the press wasn't "respecting" her, and they were attacking her because she was a woman--the campaign accused the press of being sexist (as Amy Poehler/Hillary Clinton said, "Which I'm surprised to see they care about all of a sudden").

SarahMC nailed it: "They are using Palin's sex in a cynical way, to avoid exposing her for the corrupt, inept liar she is. And that's sexist." They're trying to distract us from their own cynicism and sexism--picking a running mate who is clearly not qualified in order gain "angry Hillary supporter" votes--by accusing anyone of sexism who would question Palin's credentials. That in itself is sexist--or is at least pro-sexist--because it cries wolf. It waters down what sexism really is and makes people who legitimately speak out against real discrimination sound whiny. So whether you look at it Brown's way or this way, it isn't the press (in this case) who's being sexist.

For what it's worth, I have a feeling Brown knows exactly what's going on, and is just beating the McCain campaign at their own game.

I had the same thought as Caitlin, who said, "I would have liked this better if she was calling for Sarah Palin to "break the chains"...this makes it seem like she's more of a delicate flower because she has no say in the matter or can't speak up for herself."

It would be nice to see it acknowledged that Palin does have some individual agency in this matter.

Such an acknowledgement would also make more visible the very important point that it's not just Palin's right to be present in the campaign as a "real candidate"; it is her obligation to be present. Refusing to speak to reporters and deal with the public (or refusing to allow her to do so, depending on who you see as responsible for this situation) is not only sexist and anti-feminist but anti-democratic.

what MaggieF and sarahMC said.

and yeah maggie, i too think campbell brown knows exactly what they're trying to pull and is calling them out on their bullshit.

great video!

Ditto Caitlin and Christy. Brown's screed nauseated me. Forget that the media itself is hardly playing preacher here: It just wants some juicy interviews from the candidate. Beyond that, the screed contradicted itself, treating Palin as the same cowering kid she says the campaign does by saying its men have to liberate her.

"Allow her to show her stuff?" "Free Sarah Palin?" Since when does Palin need anybody's permission, and how is she not "free?" Why does Brown assume Palin isn't already doing exactly as she pleases and calling the shots? And why, oh, why does Brown think it has to be a male authority who "frees" her?

frat4437, I call bullshit. You got any support for that claim?

Palin does NOT have any agency -- she's a candidate for VICE-President. That means she does what the candidate for President wants. Biden does the same thing. All successful vice-presidents do that. That's their job! Calling out McCain for his bad decisions regarding what Palin should be doing is completely legit. If Palin were an unqualified male, the press would still be calling out McCain because he's the one in control. It's not a "women have no agency" thing.

saw this one already in blogspot.com's women's blog, broadsheet. all I've got to say is that she is right! they are sheltering this " mrs. sarah moosefluff" simply because they are afraid that if she opens her mouth and talks to the press, she will definitely fuck up john mc viagra dick's presidential hopes! well maybe NOT with the repug party's best loyalists, those such as "operation rescue"[ www.operationrescue.org ] and the " army of god"[ www.armyofgod.org] I couldn't afford to support the feminist majority, but nevertheless, after signing those support forms of two woman's clincs in danger[ kansas, and missisippi] , I had to google these sickos. I'm glad they gave the army of god's founder 6 consecutive life sentences![ he fatally bombed two abortion clinics, plus a woman's organization and lesbian bar] death may have been better, but this way- he'll have more " time" to think about his mistakes he made in the " name of god"!

I absolutely agree with this. While it would be lovely if Palin suddenly spoke out and said she was ready for questions, she is running for vice president and for that reason I have the feeling that she (like all other vice presidents) does whatever she's told by the campaign. She's not going to do something the McCain campaign tells her will jeopardize their chances of winning. For that reason, it is up to the McCain campaign to allow the reporters to speak to her, and it's about time they did so. The woman does have a brain, contrary to evidence thus far, and regardless of her views she has a right to prove it.

but what I should've added before, which I forgot, is this. yes, it is sexism at its finest! sexism in the sense that the john mc coathanger campaign is CONTROLLING PALIN! they simply fear that if she answers any questions on, say , foreign affairs, which she knows little if anything about; that would look bad on mc jerko! also, they fear that she will speak about what she does know, and that is her stance on legal abortion/birth control, just about everything else the christo-fascists want to hear, BUT the "moderate"[conservative-but not extreme right] republicans[ especially educated women like my sister] do NOT agree with 100%!
my sister, for example, simply ignored the "leftist, feminist crap" I've FWD to her about both mc cain/palin from NARAL, NOW, etc; saying " the feminists from NOW were considered like socialists when I grew up" [mid- 1960's]
and speak of John Mc Sexist, my 87 year old mom just mentioned tonight that " they are cancelling her appearance at the debate because mc cain's going to washington to work things out with the bailout." and what happened to the interview with katie couric and sarah moose-head?? I guess they chose to cancel that one, too? I really hope my mom is right when she says " they don't have a chance! obama will win!"

Yes Free Sarah Palin, although think she is doing what the campaign asks of her. That is to keep a low profile, there has been some nasty comments about her on the internets. She is still a successful politicain( In Alaska)she should be able to handle herself under fire from reporters. But thanks to Brown pointing out that no matter their gender their not ready to lead if they can't even take a little pressure from the press. What am I talking about the Republican party have been Feminist and champions of women's issues for three and a half weeks!lol!

samhita, I was disturbed to find out that you deleted my other comments I made from my other posts, including the one I made on the post called "John Mccain has suspending his campaign, calls for obama to do the same, my comment read "I think this is a selfless and courageous thing Mccain is doing"- that's all it said.

Instead of telling me what was wrong with that post, you instead deleted it without anyone knowing or without telling anyone- not good samhita.

I have read the comments policy and would like to know in what way I violated it by making that comment.

This is a public blog and I would like to know why you are obviously controlling peoples opinions so much.

I think at least one other blogger at this website agreed with me- "Wow, so now commenter's with opposing viewpoints are belittled and then told to go away and never come back? Unfortunately, when you post on a public blog like this you open yourself up to criticism, as I'm sure all the other ladies who post here have noticed. If you don't want to hear other peoples' opinions, keep it on a private blog that only your friends can read" -After the way samhita treated me today, I'm afraid I am starting to agree with you, Morgan La Fey.

samhita, instead of cowardly deleting this comment, I think you need to explain you censorious actions to me and the other posters.

This is supposed to be a website where women can feel free to express their opinions without being belittled.

p.s. sorry guys for putting this comment on so many posts, I'm just afraid samhita will delete it before you guys can see how bad samhita has gotten lately when it comes to deleating people's different points of view

*update* After reviewing my profile, it actually looks like samhita made it where I can't post anymore. seriously. Thats why I had to use the name frat4435 instead of frat4437.
Pretty cowardly samhita, especially since it was you who said to me on the thread called "Un Feminist Guilty Pleasure: Commercial Rap". when were debating the misogyny in the music industry and I had to step out for a few hours- you said "I think you should read up about the culture of misogyny in hip hop and what produces it, why it is so popular and who is buying into the product. With that extra analysis come back to this debate"

It turns out that evidently during that time I was gone, (without informing anyone or giving me a warning) you banned me from posting on this website under my original name frat4437. Wow, If you were intimidated to have a debate with me, why not just tell me that, instead of deleting me. lol.

cowardly, samhita

I'm still a litle put off by Campbell because of this. Its seems she was hopping on the "gender card" accusation bandwagon for her own political purposes.

[0+|0-] Author Profile Page gopher said:

wow "frat"4436. If its any consolation, I'm happy she banned your comments. So, if I, as a poster am happy she banned a troll, I guarantee she didnt do it simply to serve herself. Why dont you go on a different blog and take your frat crap somewhere else?

Sarah Palin is a women, they are inherently stupider and weaker. It's the facts of life, I'm not sexist, biology is.

Ok, yeah. This is not a "public blog" as in, your rights are being infringed on if you aren't allowed to spew your own brand of nonsense. This blog was started to give young feminists a safe place to hang out. Go fight injustice elsewhere, frat4436.
