Anti-feminists on Sarah Palin: When the hypocrisy hits the fan

Concerned Women for America, a conservative anti-feminist organization, released a statement recently calling on the media to "stop bullying" Sarah Palin:

"In its continuing game of 'gotcha' journalism and the 'politics of personal destruction,' the mainstream media (MSM) and celebrity reporters are piling on Sarah Palin," said, Dr. Janice Shaw Crouse, political commentator for CWALAC. "The personal attacks have reached unprecedented pettiness and hypocrisy. Even former journalistic giants (like the Washington Post and New York Times) are engaging in tabloid-like sensationalism and printing vicious distortions about her life, faith, experience and family. Even feminists -- who supposedly promote women's equality and the so-called 'women's rights' agenda -- are questioning a female candidate's ability to get the job done. It's past time for the bullying to stop!" (Emphasis mine)

Wow, Crouse sure is riled up about sexism! She must have been livid about the misogynist attacks against Sen. Hillary Clinton, right? Well...not so much. Check out what Crouse said about Sen. Clinton's DNC speech just last month:

Mrs. Clinton arrived to great fanfare. She had on a flashy orange-gold pants suit. She has been on Weight Watchers' diet program and looked fit. Her less-wrinkled, 60-year-old face prompted speculation that she was botoxed for prime time. The audience was a sea of white placards with the distinctive Hillary signature. Many of her supporters were teary-eyed with what might have been, while the clinched jaws of others revealed their unwillingness to accept defeat.

Stay classy, anti-feminists!

I just love the ultra right wing "women's" organizations that are run by the gay sons of the Rapture Bunnies.

What is with right wing gay men, I mean being a gay person for the conservative cause is like being a chicken for Colonel Sanders. Then they have all these professional right wing women who are neglecting their womanly duties to tel other women how bad they are for being feminists.

Hypocrisy Rules among the Reich Wingers.

The use of the word 'unprecedented'... you're doing it wrong.

Yeah, how dare we question Sarah Palin's credentials as though she were a male politician.

well, Concerned Women for Yourprivilegedselves I mean AMERICA, didya watch the snl skit? cuz i have to loosely quote Amy Poehler's rendition of Hillary here: IT'S NOT (necessarily) SEXIST TO QUESTION A CANDIDATE'S CREDENTIALS! (Yes, please DO ask that one about dinosaurs). So, seriously, why cry "sexism" when most of us are questioning her ability as a candidate because she's, well, unbelievably underqualified?

Also, Jessica, your posts tend to evoke a uniquely feminist-feelin' bitter laughter. Thank you for that.

In the October issue of Glamour Magazine. John McCain was ask whether he believed that Senator Clinton was treated fair on the campaign trail as a woman. His response

" You know, I dont know because I am not objective enough to make that judgment. I simply don't know. But I know the one thing I try to avoid in my campaigns is feeling sorry for myself. It's easy to do,pick up the paper in the morning, read a story that's negative,oh my God, they're picking on me. You just can't do that. You just can't do that.

Maybe Palin, McCain and all these ultra right wing women should follow his advise!

Ha ha. "STOP YER SEXISM AGAINST SARAH! Now, then, let's get back to important things like Hillary's weight and appearance ... "

We are also questioning John McCain's ability to get the job done. Sarah Palin's qualifications for the Vice Presidency, or lack thereof, are not a funtion of her vagina.

Well, if anyone on this site thought the personal attacks on Clinton needed to stop, then I'm sure you would want them to stop against Palin because otherwise, that would be hypocritical.

Also, I find it curious that women who support Palin are labeled anti-feminists on this website. I guess it's "I am woman hear me roar" so long as that roar is in keeping with liberalism. Real classy.

The hypocrisy doesn't surprise me. However, I've seen right wing conservative women on Fox News question whether Palin could do the job because she has five children. They even attack their own.

This just makes me want to stick my head in the oven.

I also love the put-down detail of Hilary supporters' clenched jaws and unwillingness to accept defeat. You know if McCain and Palin lose (pu pu pu) these same ever-concerned women are not just going to sit tight and take it, like McCain thinks everyone should.

Paint me not surprised.

Bobbigirl, don't be lazy. CWA were not 'labeled' anti-feminist because they support Palin, it was because THAT'S WHAT THEY LABEL THEMSELVES.

And this website has not made personal attacks on Palin. A personal attack is not the same as an attack on credentials, ability, or record. Get it together.

In other posts, this blog has not said Palin supporters were anti-feminists, but that it was hypocritical, tacky, simple-minded, and downright lying (maybe in more polite words) for them to call themselves feminists, or to use that term when talking about Palin. Just because she's a woman with a career doesn't make her a feminist. You actually have to have certain ideas about the way our society works to call yourself that.

If you want to do that whole sarcastic "feminists only let you join their club if you toe their liberal party line, they're such hypocrites" thing, why don't you have a look at the Courtney's interview posted yesterday? This topic comes up, and Gloria Jacobs points out that if you want to genuinely engage with feminism, you have to actually support the idea of women's ability to make individual choices for themselves (about working, motherhood, sexuality etc - not just abortion). Sarah Palin has supported policies that reduce women's ability to have equal agency to men.

So, again: Having a vagina and a job does NOT mean you can call expect to call yourself a feminist and not be called out on it. Just like wearing a flag-pin on your lapel doesn't automatically mean you would make a good president, or being a mere body of water away from another country means you grasp foreign policy.

Jeez! It's not that hard.

Five years ago, at 23 yrs old, I was rapidly moving away from fundamentalist, right-wing, Christian beliefs/politics. This being said, I took a risk and accepted a D.C. internship at oh yes, Concerned Women for America, and guess who I worked for? Yep! Janice Crouse.

All I have to say is that her comments are 100% in-line with her whole 'if your not with me, your against me' beliefs. I only lasted 2 of 10 weeks and it all went down when I wrote a short article about young women's difficult quest to "have-it-all" - career and babies. Apparently she didn't disagree too much, as long as she was able to change my voice and exchange words (ie woman for female) throughout the article. I politely re-edited my work nearly to the original and opened up the discussion as to why. She couldn't handle it and I left her office in tears. I quickly decided the internship wasn't worth it, made arrangements to get out, and let her know it was a bad fit. Again, she flipped out, berated me in her office, sent me out, brought me back in and told me I had to go NOW. She berated me a bit more, I left the office, she followed and then "kindly" and literally showed me to the door. I guess she was afraid I'd steal something from the RW&Blue office or at least the W off the keyboard?

Moral of the story? There is no room for discussion or difference in Ms. Crouse's world, you either agree absolutely with Janice or you become an enemy. This woman spent very little time with me when she thought I was on-board ideologically and yet did not hold back in attacking me personally with verbal lashings when it became apparent I was not "on her side". In my idealistic, eager to learn, innocently young soon-to-be feminist mind - I was shocked to see the sudden flip. I was still a Christian at the time, and it was disheartening to see that my "sister in Christ" could suddenly hate me so much.

Honestly, it is time to disregard these bigots.

The kicker? My favorite thing about CWA when I was there - the top 2 leadership positions of Concerned WOMEN for America were filled by MEN. Enough said.

Thanks a lot for that story, LoveFromAlaska. My sincere condolences for you having to endure two weeks of her.
