Bitch magazine needs your help!

Bitch magazine, the wonderful feminist publication, is in dire need of help. The past issue it put out may be its last if the mag doesn't raise $40,000 by October 15.

That's a lot of money - but with all the kick-ass feminists out there who know and love bitch, I'm betting it's possible.

So please take a moment to watch this video of Debbie Rasmussen and Andi Zeisler explaining what's going on, and consider donating here. I know I will be.

Thanks for posting this here. I saw this news elsewhere and came here this morning hoping to either see it or appeal to you to post it.

Good mornings, all. And please, just $10 will help if enough of us can give.

I just donated! I think it's really critical that we all pitch in to support one of the only print publications on earth that doesn't condescend, insult, or dismiss women in all our complexity. Dish it out people.

NO! I have been reading "Bitch" since high school and recently decorated my apartment with old Bitches (their covers are so beautiful). I will donate after my next paycheck. And probably again after the next paycheck after that.

Please, please, please everyone, donate anything you can. It isn't always (completely) true, but this is absolutely one of those times where you can just add up how much money you spend on things in a week (or even a day) that are completely frivolous and that you'd rather give up than lose Bitch. I did and so can you.

Bitch is my favorite magazine ever.

I'm dying for payday but I still coughed up $10. We can do it, Bitch fans!

Noooooooooo!

I was just about to renew my subscription! I will do it on Friday and add something extra!

So many feminist publications end up in that big magazine rack in the sky. I can't stand to let Bitch be one of them- at least not while I can actually afford to help!

I will send the news around to some good people I know. I think we should be able to pull together for this.

I hope they are able to raise enough money! I can't imagine being without Bitch!!

I just donated as well--if you can do it people, please donate something!

I can't imagine not having Bitch anymore.

By far, my favorite magazine. I read every issue cover to cover because I can't put it down! The articles are intriguing, inspiring and thought-provoking. I don't even agree with everything in the magazine, which makes it extra super special to me; it means they don't sugar coat their material or mush it into a bland inoffensive pulp like other magazines. Such a vital publication!

Please, if you can, throw some coin their way. Theirs is an important voice in the feminism of the 2000's. I just gave $50. Wish I could give $1000.

Not to sound like an echo or anything but ... noooooooo!

I just donated -- I'll let my friends know as well.

BITCH has been there for me through thick and thin. I've always found solace, empowerment, and education through its pages. I'm so grateful for everything BITCH stands for, and like others have said, I read every issue from front to back including the advertisements.

I love that they've never "sold out". I love all the woman-positive literature packed into such a great publication.

I will donate. I'm not well-off, and certainly rent is due soon, but I can live without the small things and pitch in.

I'm lucky to have a subscription to this awesome magazine, and I hope that will continue.

Consider posting flyers at your college, around town, or just telling your friends and family about this great publication.

We can make a difference!

I'm dismayed by this too, though for different reasons.

I have a coworker who used to be on Bitch's board, and she told me (and I've seen this noted elsewhere too) that this is the third time they've run this exact campaign - we need X amount of money by a certain date or we're done for. That's a little worrisome to me. I certainly know that the economy is in the crapper right now but...to me, it really sounds like they need to look more closely at their business practices and financial workings if they have come this close to shutting down three times. They only publish four issues a year - granted, their circulation is small, but between newsstand sales, subscriptions and renewals, as well as their limited advertising sales, it shouldn't be that they are completely out of money.

I work for a nonprofit magazine, in the fundraising department, so I do have experience with this exact thing. Our circulation is bigger, though by no means at Time or Newsweek levels. We depend very much on donations, but not to such a dire degree. We're not rolling in dough and there are definitely months where our accounting and financial officers are wringing their hands a little...that's pretty much par for the course at a non-profit. But if we ever got to the point that Bitch is at - and has been at twice before - our board would probably demand to take over the entire administrative section of the business because it would seem pretty clear that we were doing something wrong...or at least, not doing it as well as we should.

Also, what about after this? If they get the $40k and print the next issue....what about the next one? If they have no money now and are depending entirely on donations, what does that say about their future stability? When it's a repeated problem, you have to wonder what's causing it and you HAVE to look further than asking for money to fix it.

Trust me, I love Bitch Magazine - I think it's a great and necessary voice and I'm glad it's out there. I would be disappointed to see it go. But I can't help but look at it objectively. No matter what your business is, it's a business - and any business can implode if it's not being run well.

Bitch has a ton of well-written, compelling content--I was a proofreader for them for nearly two years before they moved up north, and reading the work was always fun. I think any honest, earnest discussion of feminism should be supported, even if the particulars differ, and I'm glad they've been able to persevere through tough times.
