Quick Hit: Palin's Handling of Other People's Pregnant Teens
As was pointed out by puppyfist and Kinderplatz in comments, Sarah Palin isn't exactly supportive when it comes to teen moms who aren't her daughter. She slashed funding for Passage House, a transitional home for teenage mothers that gives young women a place to "live with their babies for up to eighteen months while they gain the necessary skills and resources to change their lives."
Michelle Cottle at The Plank has the story.

Well, there you go. The hypocrisy is breathtaking.
I find it quite funny that feministing is failing to mention how the media is being blatantly sexist about Palin, saying that she may not be able to serve since she has kids and grandchildren now. where is Feministing defending her now? are you guys just partisan hacks or do you actually dissaprove of feminism. first you call feminists for life a faux-feminist group because they don't tow the party line on abortion (are we to assume that there is a feminist rule book that says you have to support abortion?), then you don't come to an avowed feminists side when the media assumes she can't multi-task. it is sexist towards her and her husband to assume that she can't lead and that he can't parent. though judging by some of the sentiments seen on this site, most of you would probably liked her better if she aborted her down syndrome child and made her daughter get an abortion. seriously, Hillary getting bashed in the media wasn't enough? Now you fools will sit idly by and not comment on the media's sexism just because she is not your candidate? Looking at the bios of the contributors here, you would think that some of the education would help you to think rationally, clearly it has just made you institutionalized partisan stooges, brain-washed by the left-wing ideologue factories. Journalism degrees. Wow, why am I not surprised?

actually, chumpy, feministing has gone to bat for Palin:
and -http://www.feministing.com/archives/010798.html -http://www.feministing.com/archives/010717.html -http://www.feministing.com/archives/010705.htmlif you actually took a second to look at this site's coverage of Palin's nomination before spewing out your regurgitated talking-point bullshit, you'd have noticed that.
so, i'm going to keep this somewhat civil and just ask that you check out what you're criticizing before you criticize. it makes you look really dumb and i'm sure that's not your intention.
Umm, chumpy, maybe you should scroll down a couple of posts and find the one about Palin, women, and careers (or check out any of the other posts on the regular and community site). In it, the author clearly states that Palin is unquestionably capable of having a career and being a successful mother. Most have also agreed that while the topic of teen pregnancy and abstinince-only sex ed is fair game (as Palin supports the latter as a matter of public policy), her daughter is off limits, as is her youngest son (whose birth, for the record, no one here objects to).
Most of the posters and editors don't like Palin's politics, but the vast majority of posters have clearly stated that we will defend Palin against sexist bullshit in the media and other blogs - even liberal ones. Of course, questioning her politics and the fact that she claims privileges she would deny other women is not sexist, it's critique of a candidate's policy.
By the way, you do realize that Sarah Palin has a journalism degree as well, right?
Do we really know anything about this woman? I am confused about the rules here. I personally am a pro-choice Hillary Democrat, but can't someone be a feminist AND be a pro-life Republican? Or is that forbidden by definition?
baffly--I personally don't see how one can be a feminist and deny women agency over their own bodies. So, no, as far as I'm concerned (and if someone has a reasoned argument to the contrary, please share), you can't be feminist and "pro-life."
Just to clarify for anyone who might be baffled about this particular post, it is not about whether or not being pro-life can co-exist with being feminist. It's possible.
THIS post is about a woman with a pregnant teenage daughter, who also chose to CUT FUNDING for other teenage mothers who have CHOSEN to keep their babies. She should have said, hey, I think we should encourage pro-life policies like this one that trains young mothers who have chosen not to go the abortion route.
Her decision as the most powerful woman in Alaska was to oppose abortion services AND services for women that don't choose abortion. That is neither feminism nor pro-life. That is hypocrisy.
"you can't be feminist and "pro-life.""
This I would disagree with, as I believe the default position of nearly everyone would be considered "pro-life." However, there exists an economic burden attached with children, especially among younger women, necessitating abortion in certain cases. This is simply not being addressed by the pro-life supporters, and that is why they ultimately fail in the battle of ideas revolving around the issue because it is viewed in terms of black and white. They're only pro-life up until the point of birth, then the child simply becomes fodder for the machine. So I believe one can be pro-life and still be a feminist, you just can't be stupid about it.
As stated, this is an undistributed middle.

Palin reduced funding for Covenant House Alaska by more than 20 percent, cutting funds from $5 million to $3.9 million. Covenant House is a mix of programs and shelters for troubled youths, including Passage House, which is a transitional home for teenage mothers.
This states that Passage House is only part of Covenant House. The budget cuts for Covenant House may or may not have affected Passage House. It is even possible that other programs of Covenant House may have been cut to provide increased funding for Passage Hous.
A responsible journalist would have looked for information specific to Passage House (and if some parts of Passage House's funding were in fact cut, looked at what parts those were.)
