Resistance art by young women

'

From the NYTimes City Room:

Paratroopers are drifting down to earth -- well, down the side of a Brooklyn apartment building -- and slowly being helped back on their feet. This scene has finally come into full view in Sunset Park, where a group of young women this summer painted a mural that was their response to military recruiters in their schools and neighborhoods.

The mural project was sponsored by the Groundswell Community Mural Project.

Badass.

I live in Brooklyn and this mural faces the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway. I got to see this lovely piece a ton last week (taking a car service to/from work due to a fractured ankle). I'm really glad to know more about it.

Thanks!

It seems to me that the only way to combat the exploiting of the underpriviledged by recruiters is to bring back the draft. OR stop going to war. I prefer the limitation of unnecessary war and bringing back diplomacy.

The building is 713 3rd Ave in Brooklyn, and it's on the corner of 23rd Street.

Dear Friends,

On Saturday, September 6 at 1pm, we'll be dedicating the latest mural in the Voices Her'd Series. Please save the date.
Thisis the fifth consecutive year I've been lucky enough to be the leadthis project, utilizing public art as a tool to communicate issues
confronting contemporary young women of color.

This year's topic has been especially meaningful for all of us, as it examines issues surrounding women in the military, the war in Iraq,
military recruitment, and government exploitation of low-income communities at wartime.

We hope you can join us.

Love,
Katie

P.S. If you haven't had the opportunity, please check out the NY Times article on the project:

Oh! yeah that is exactly what I want to see when I am walking or driving somewhere. Honestly if I saw that hideous piece of so called "art" I would probably throw up.
