Lapriss Gilbert was forced to leave a federal building after a guard in the Social Security office told her that her "lesbian.com" shirt was offensive.
She said the guard, who works for a private company hired by the Department of Homeland Security, demanded that she leave the building or face arrest."As an African-American and a lesbian, I haven't been through one day without facing some sort of discrimination ... but this is just shocking," said Gilbert, 31.
A witness, Paul Dumont said, "For her to be told to leave was completely unnecessary, especially considering how peaceful and quiet she was responding the the security officers." In his statement to police Dumont noted that the guard's "loud, unreasonable, aggressive and angry approach to the situation almost caused chaos."

And of course, anyone wearing a "rape is funny" type shirt is also asked to leave, right?
Seriously though, there is absolutely nothing wrong with that shirt (unless, of course, you are a homophobe/asshole/moron). I am glad that there is at least one whitness that is willing to defend this woman from the inevitable "angry black woman with an attitude" excuse that would be given as the "real reason" she was asked to leave.
Uugh! What is wrong with people?
It kind of makes me want to get a lesbian.com t-shirt, go there, and cause a ruckus.
Discrimination is offensive. Somebody throw the "security guard" out. I hope she sues.
This is absurd! My heart goes out to this woman who faced such disgusting discrimination.
Because this is a public building (private buildings owners have their own property rights), they cannot throw her out for her shirt, even if it said the most vile, offensive things. It's called free speech. I know a lot of people throw around "Constitutional Rights!" a lot, but it actually applies to this situation.
There was a huge court case on this very matter. A man wore a shirt into a court house that said "Fuck the draft." He was either arrested or thrown out because of it. The matter went to trial, and the court basically said that you can have anything you damn well please on your shirt and if others don't like it, they can just look the other way. This guard was horribly in the wrong, was bigoted, and infringed on her Constitutional rights.

This is completely ridiculous! I hope she sues too! It makes you wonder who else this guard would throw out? What if I had a shirt that said "Native American," or "Indigenous." OUT, we don't want your kind here!
they cannot throw her out for her shirt, even if it said the most vile, offensive things.
Well, I would imagine something that endorses violence, especially violence against the government or a member of government, would not be acceptable.
Blatant homophobia! How anyone thinks were in a post-(race, sexism, classism, sexuality) era is beyond me.
someone on the thread about this over at Shakesville made an interesting point. Would he still have found the shirt offensive if it had been worn by a porn-star look-alike?
Wonderful news. I am really happy to hear this. Women like this make all women look bad. This is a step in the right direction as far as I am concerned. When are queers going to get it through their minds that they can not just shove their sexuality down peoples throats in the public and people not have a problem with it? And don't even mention anything about racism this probably would have happened if she were black or not.
Wow. Wow wow wow.
Where did all the haters come from?
Brandi,
You're actually using "queers" as a derogatory term in the 21st century. You do realize that people you breeders wear much more offensive shirts from a "shoving... sexuality down people throats in public" than us queers, right?
And, getting away from shirts, you do know that y'all make out and feel each other up in public all the time, whereas we stay nice and discrete in order to avoid getting the shit kicked out of us by haters like yourself. God forbid one of us walks around letting you know who we are.
I can't remember the last time I was on a train and saw a couple of guys making out or pinning one another against the doors... but I see all these straight folks doing it all the time. Stop rubbing your sexuality in our faces already, okay? Or, whatever, I don't care... do you... be yourself and love yourself for who you are! But don't get mad at us if we do the same.
I mean, really, it's enough that many of us can't visit our loved ones when they're sick or share benefits or even HOLD HANDS without sad, lonely hateful people like yourself telling us that we have no right to exist.
Blessings... and i hope you find the peace to love yourself enough to let other people be and love in their ways, too.
