What Women Want

No, it's not the Mel Gibson movie. No, it's not some stupid MSN Lifestyle poll. It's a new project called This Is What Women Want, brought to you by Center for New Words (which puts on the awesome WAM conference). They've launched this election-timed project to amplify women's voices.
Tired of being talked about this election season? Done with being represented by skewed polls and stereotypes?
Do you answer those questions with a resounding, hell yes!? Do you identify as a woman? Then click here to submit your own "What I Want."
A sampling of what other women have already expressed desire for...
- More and tougher convictions for rapists
- Universal childcare
- Equal rights for LGBT citizens
- Control of my own body

I want to stop seeing Dino Rossi's face everywhere...
I just told them what I want! =)
Completely off topic, but can I just say how pleased I was (am) that their logo features a fuller sized woman? So often, even among feminist circles, any illustrations of women tend to be thin. I love this new project even more for featuring a woman of girth :)
This is one area where feel like I can sympathize with those “childfree” folks. Raise your own children, please, and I will raise mine (assuming I decide to have any, that is).
This argument has never been particularly convincing to me.
You're a part of society, and part of being a member of society is that you will sometimes be called upon and expected to contribute to services and projects that you don't directly use. Just because you never have a fire in your home or never get robbed doesn't mean that you don't benefit from having a fire department or a police force. Likewise, someone who doesn't drive still benefits from having a road and expressway system that is maintained.
Our entire society benefits from having children that are healthy, educated, and properly cared for. Children grow up and become adults. Children that are poorly cared for, uneducated, or unhealthy stand less chance of being able to contribute in a positive way to our society. They are more likely to become a drain on society or, worse, to become criminals.
Children grow up to become the workers who make sure that society continues to function- they become the doctors, grocers, service workers, road crews, bankers, repair workers, pilots, etc.
Further, in places where rising childcare costs outpace wages, families are forced to choose between lower quality or even no childcare options, or employment. It's not in our best interest as society to have productive workers removed from the system because they can't afford to pay for childcare. Nor is it in our interest to have children go without care.
Which is all to say that there are benefits beyond the immediate "am I going to use this service" that should be considered.
