Getting married today?

Apparently 8/8/08 (today's date) is a popular day to get married. People seem to love special wedding dates (or at least the media loves reporting about them).
Today has particular meaning for Chinese culture, which explains the start of the Olympics today at 8:08:08pm.
The lucky number eight means wealth and prosperity to Asians who observe Chinese numerology.
According to NPR, some couples getting married today will also have eight bridesmaids and eight course meals at their ceremonies.

We got married in the Smokies last July. 7-7-07 was very popular. Our photographer was completely booked from morning until evening that day – even had a group ceremony that night for those desperate to marry on 7-7-07 that didn’t book in time. Same with all of the other chapels and places that offered wedding packages (not waiting period in Tennessee) – booked solid on 7-7-07.
We talked about getting married on 7-7-07, but it was my husband’s birthday and I didn’t think it was fair to him to have our anniversary on the same day as his birthday (he said he didn't care). So, it was 7-3-07 and we were the only wedding for our photographer that day.
I think after an eight-course meal I'd need an eight-hour nap!
I guess I can understand the appeal of having a wedding date with some charm to it - my birthday is July 11 and I've always loved that it's 7-11. I tell people they have no excuse for forgetting it :)
Nope, not today. But I am getting married tomorrow. ;)
Not getting married for quite some time- cause I was just born 20 years ago today! My birthday is 8-8-88. How about that for some luck?
Happy birthday mmmvla!
And good luck tomorrow zombieprincess :)
After the eight-course meal, how about eight hours of sex? First thing that came to mind :) Although I would recommend waiting for the food to digest.
One sad aspect of 8/8/8 is that there are thousands of Chinese women having scheduled c-sections so that their children are born on the lucky day, many before they are actually ready to be born. I hope the weddings and other joyful celebrations outshine what could potentially be dangerous to many babies and mothers.
Congrats zombieprincess!
Happy birthday mmmvla!
I hope you both have great days.
Why judge how women choose to bring their baby in the world, Tealy? Does it mean that if a mother chooses an elective c-section she is not as good of a mother as women who don't? There are risks giving birth naturally too. That's why a lot of women died during childbirth in the early days
ShelbyWoo: I also got married on 7/3 (though several years ago). The bonus? You'll rarely, if ever, have to work the day after so you can celebrate however (and as late) as you want :)
Lana: The risks of c-section, whether planned or emergency, are far higher than physiological natural, vaginal birth. Also, choosing a c-section pre-term for no reason other than birthday preference puts the fetus at real risk for no legitimate, medical reason. In fact, cesarean is the only major abdominal surgery that ethics committees allow women to choose due to pure "preference." A fetus who's ready to be born will initiate labor. Before then, its lungs are often not fully developed, among other things, and the baby is at higher risk of health problems post-birth.
Nobody said mothers who choose c-sections are "bad" mothers. More likely, they're uninformed and/or misled into thinking a c-section is just as good as allowing natural, physiologic birth to start simultaneously.
