Girls Gone Wild crew supervisor Matthew O'Sullivan, 37, was arrested for sexually assaulting a 20 year-old woman on the "party bus" while the show was filming in Long Island, New York.
[Trigger Warning]
At O'Sullivan's arraignment yesterday, Suffolk County prosecutors said he and the victim started touching and kissing, which she had no problem with. But things took a tawdry turn when he allegedly pulled down her shorts and underwear as he put his hands around her throat to keep her from running out.
The young woman was able to break free when her friends came on the bus. The pals yanked back a curtain and saw her struggling with O'Sullivan, prosecutors said.
The friends called 911 and the victim was able to flag down a passing police car...
Seriously, when is someone going to shut this fucking operation down? How many more women have to be assaulted by Joe Francis and Co. before something is done? And yeah, I realize that you can't put them out of business because of the actions of a few of their employees, but it's clear that this company breeds and condones violence against women.

I hope he rots in jail! Girls Gone Wild has repaved the way for men to openly disrespect women. Its so sick to see. I agree, this GGW franchise needs to be shut down. Joe Francis should of been kept in jail. Good for the girl's friends for rescuing her and reporting him to the authorities. Of course, it will be turned around like its all her fault. Please. It perpetuates misogyny, violence against women, and the mainstreaming of porn. Fuckin pigs! I wish we could start a petition of some sort to put these losers out of business. When young girls are trying to emulate GGW, there are some serious issues. I hope that rapist becomes someone's little bitch in prison. Just makes me angry!

Joe Francis is so god damned creepy, the entire concept is creepy. And you know what, a-list celebs hang out with the guy. How the hell is it cool to hang out with someone who makes his living off of people who would legally be considered too drunk to consent to sex, but it ok to consent to showing titties for a t-shirt and a hat? (they just show boobs, right? Or is this actually sex that goes on?)
Anyone who knows my stance on what would seem like the similar issue of the "real" adult industry might be surprised that I'm so creeped out by this guy and what he does. But it is one thing to willingly participate in porno or stripping or whatever and quite another matter to go around finding drunk people and not even giving them money, just schwag. Hell those guys in the Bumfights videos actually got cash for being exploited!
Also the target audience should be recorded for profiling purposes, because seriously if you get your jollies off of something like this I'll bet date-rape seems like an ok idea.
So yeah, it's not surprising that a company that works on the same principles as frat rape would have some shit heel working for them. I mean hey, innocent until proven guilty and all that but it's more likely than not IMHO.
Joe Francis & Co. are the scum of the earth. When GGW tried to film in my town me and a few other amazing ladies organized to get them shut down. Our petition had so many signatures that they agreed to stay out, but I sure got my share of hate mail about it. Apparently not supporting this kind of "entertainment" means I'm an ugly virginal lesbian.
"Apparently not supporting this kind of "entertainment" means I'm an ugly virginal lesbian"
Apparently Joe Francis & Co. are repressed homosexuals!
I don't mean to derail, but as someone who actively works to end sexual assault everywhere, but specifically in prisons, I'd really love it if feminists would stop wishing rape upon others, no matter how disgustingly vile the individual may be. Sentiments like, "I hope that rapist becomes someone's little bitch in prison." aren't helpful in any way (except maybe venting some well-earned anger--I really do understand the anger, trust me). Do a little research into prison rape and one will see that the dynamics are often (if not always) the same as most rapes of women: the victim is othered-often belittled with feminized terms like "bitch." If we _really_ want to end rape and sexual assault, we CANNOT accept it in any form, nor perpetuate the misogyny of rape with terms like "someone's little bitch."
That being said, I CAN'T STAND JOE FRANCIS, nor anyone who works for him, especially this rapist. Here's hoping the "justice" system doesn't let us down.
kaylagrrl,
thank you. having done prison work and having had several friends who've done time, i can't stand to see privileged folks, even if i usually agree with them, asking for someone to be raped in prison as though it were some kind of justice.
It's cute that jackass is still wearing the Girls Gone Wild shirt when he was arrested. Sometimes, I feel like just beating the shit out of rapists rather than letting them have their day in court. But of course, that's only a fantasy.
People deny the link between pornography (misogyny) and rape. But then again, if women are viewed as pieces of meat by these guys, then it goes without saying that women's rejection and personal feelings mean nothing to them. If Girls Gone Wild ever comes on to my campus or near my city, there's going to be a fight.
kaylagrrl,
Point well taken. As you mentioned, it was said out of anger. Next time, I will choose my words carefully. I sincerely apologize to those reading and did not mean to offend. Indeed its a problem everywhere. Comments like I made perpetuate the issue. Thanks for bringing that up.
I am going to jump back in here and say that it's okay to feel angry, and that it's okay to hope that this jackass gets raped, hurt, maimed and killed. I am tired of "oh, we're feminists, we're not supposed to get angry or use violence" bullshit. Admit it - if you're reading this, you're probably pretty fucking angry at the situation, and deep down inside somewhere, you'd want this guy to get what he deserves. We feminists are humans, too, and can show our anger if we want to. I don't buy into this lovey-dovey bullshit.
At the end of the day, if guys like Joe Francis and company got ran over by a fucking bus, I'd be out there buying people drinks to celebrate. It's not politically correct, it's not "feministic" to say it, but it's fucking true, and you can't deny it.
Marc
@Marc
I agree. There is nothing wrong with wishing that criminals experience the same pain and suffering they imposed upon their victims. Though, I do think "someones little bitch" perpetuates the misogyny of rape, which dondoca conceded.
okay to hope that this jackass gets raped, hurt, maimed and killed
For every rape there is a person on the other side doing the raping. Is that guy going to be your hero in this case?
Kaylagrrl I think your point is really important and I am so glad you said that. I saw this interview with Joe Francis where he was talking about being paraded around naked in jail, and I am deeply ashamed to admit that I immediatley got gleeful before I cam to my senses and reflected on how fucked up prisons are.
Marc, I don't think it is about being lovey-dovey, I think it is about recognizing that sceanoarios where rape victims are made to feel ashamed and rapists are considered powerful is deeply and unequivocally bad for women, and that is what we are hoping for if we say that we hope he "becomes someone's bitch" in jail. In my mind that is very different than hoping he gets hit by a bus (ideally his own stupid bus)/mauled by lions/turned away from the gates of heaven by his own parents expressing their disgust at what he has become. Go karma!
Marc, I couldn't disagree more. Anger can be put to positive use, but excessive anger and hate are not positive emotions, just like stress is not a positive emotion. Too much of them is actually physically harmful. Studies have been done demonstrating that regular excessive anger, in fact, can shorten your lifespan significantly.
It isn't lovey-dovey to acknowledge that even human scum are still humans. I do think that allowing ourselves to really and truly wish ill on others makes us no better than those we condemn. It demeans their personhood, just as they demean women's personhood. Frankly, for me this issue has nothing to do with being feminist, even -- it just has to do with being a decent human being. Sure, everyone has bursts of irrational anger and rage and might have a fleeting moment or two of wanting to cause harm -- that's a natural gut reaction. But it isn't "okay" to wish ill on another. We may think we are justified in doing so -- but in their twisted minds, these cretins likely think they're justified in harming women. They might even find a way to rationalize it as "not harm" by saying, oh those feminist bitches are crazy, these girls just wanna have fun and we're helping them, etc. But I honestly have trouble differentiating this attitude one hundred percent from the attitude of those who think, hey, it's okay to waterboard terrorists, since they've done so much wrong to others, etc. Really, anything can be rationalized with the right underlying argument. I think we really do need to be careful that we don't allow ourselves to fall into the trap of thinking we are so much better than another person that we have the right to decide him or her no longer worthy of basic human rights.
And I'm certainly not trying to say I'm at all perfect here. Like, if someone killed my family there's a very decent chance I'd hunt them down and brutally kill them. But it's important for me to acknowledge that this very understandable reaction is bad. I think we rob ourselves of our own humanity when we allow ourselves to cross that line of dehumanizing others.
I agree that there's a difference, Logrus. It's one thing for sober adult women to sign up for a video knowing what they're getting into and being reasonably compensated; it's another to bring along alcohol and other drugs and then pressure drunken girls into participating in something where the boundaries are not clearly drawn. The lack of compensation is just adding insult to injury.
And the infuriating thing is that many people think GGW is just innocent fun.
I'm scared to read this story on any other website that allows comments because I know what the reaction will be... "Well, she got on a Girls Gone Wild bus and got drunk, what was she expecting?"
And to Marc, it's not about saying that feminists shouldn't be angry or that they should behave in a certain way. Society has outlined a definition of power that involves dominating others and made it a critical part of masculinity. This manifests in a lot of forms and sexual assault is one of them. When we see women victimized by a man who believes he has a right to dominate her it's understandable to be angry. I would be concerned if you were not enraged. But to desire that same sort of domination over others doesn't help. I'd rather we redefine what it means to be powerful and to have power. Sure, he's a piece of a shit and hopefully he's punished, but continuing the cycle by allowing a new "dominator" to assert their power (even if he deserves it) is not going to help.
I don't think it's quite just titties.
Because.
Back in the days of P2P file sharing, you'd have the system recognize the length and size of a file as being a different file. Or people would mis-label shit on purpose. Anyway, I was downloading a video, it finished, I opened it ... and got to see a scene with two women and a banana. (I don't even like bananas in my HOUSE much less my ladyparts. Ew.)
I decided to check just wtf I was watching, and it was GGW. It's not "hardcore" per se, but ... a bit more than just flashing your boobs.
I totally agree that this operation should be shut down...I despite girls gone wild and everything it perpetuates. It really sickens me.
What can we do about girls gone wild? I'd really like to take action on this.
I'm lucky enough in that as I live abroad I am only hearing about this programme now. This is outrageous in terms of its offensiveness and I am taken aback to discover such a programme exists.
The best thing to do is
1. (MOST IMPORTANT ONE) Make contact with the advertisers involved in the show. Let them know that you will not buy their products or let any of your friends buy their products while they are associated with this show. Tell them you are contacting your pol. rep about it too.
2. Email your senator or congressperson(copy the email to the company). Tell them about this programme and how it targets young women. Explain how you are worried about it and ask them to look into it.
3. Email the channel that shows this programme and let them know your concerns. Ring them if you have to. Copy the email to the advertiser to them also.
If we state that we will financially penalise those who try to make money from this programme, we will show very strongly how much we are against this programme and very likely make a change.
Kurumi & Cheese:
Just out of curiosity, what's with you and bananas? Is it political or environmental or some kind of phobia I've never heard of?
Could be that Kurumi & Cheese just finds the taste of bananas disgusting. I don't care for them much either, though I make an exception for banana bread. And I certainly know better than to put food on my ladybits; that's just asking for an infection.
maybe it's the spiders. those banana spiders sure are something else.
otherwise, well... i used to love applesauce and bananas, then i found them utterly disgusting. now, i love bananas - i'm bananas about bananas - in just about any form (fresh, ripe, underripe, in cereal, smoothies, banana bread, pan-seared...) but i still can't stand applesauce. i love apples, but i just can't stand applesauce.
and i hope this damned ggw thing goes down in such a ball of flames that even their customers have a change of mind... perhaps francis, o'sullivan and the rest meet up with some great spirit in prison and have an awakening which leads them to use their marketing prowess to spread the word about how sexual exploitation isn't good for anyone to the masses.
I hope GGW will get shut down. I FUCKING HATE JOE FRANCIS.
ShifterCat: It was just that the original statement was made with such vehemence, like "Fuck bananas!", I thought it might be some political or even health thing I would want to know about, since I eat them all the time. However for no political or health reason I do hate cilantro, and I will not tolerate it's presence in my home.
puckalish: It's really not healthy (who want's to live forever?) but I've been making deep fried plantains pretty regularly of late. I saw Alton do it, and now I can't get enough. Now sweet, either, but savory with various spices and salt, even Lawry's Seasoning Salt.
Ugh, GGW. When they came to my college town, about two hundred curious guys showed up, but ZERO women. I was very proud of the women at my university when I heard about that.
I hope this creep gets the punishment he deserves.
I feel that in all fairness, the trial should run its course and all the evidence should be weighed before the court of public opinion should render a guilty verdict. In the wake of the Duke Lacrosse sexual assault controversy, in which the court of public opinion prematurely denounced the young men in question as guilty before the evidence was properly weighed, I would have thought that people wouldn't be so hasty to pass judgment upon someone who at this time has been accused of rape. Rape has not been proven beyond a reasonable doubt in the court of law, so why should the court of public opinion be so hasty to demonize this man and run his (admittedly already somewhat sleazy) reputation through the mud? This is the sort of thing that has the potential to ruin someone's life. If he's not guilty of the crime in question (and it's up to a court of law to determine), then this article and discussion could have irreparably harmed an innocent man's reputation.
I would like it to be known that I am a pacifist, so I take acts of aggression against any person very seriously, and I do not tolerate them, except for instances of self-defense, defense of loved ones, or defense of property. However, I feel that this man for the time being should not be demonized, and only when a verdict is rendered should judgment be passed by the court of public opinion.
For further clarification, yes, I am a man, and no, I am not taking this guy's side. I prefer to remain neutral on this issue until a verdict is rendered, and I hope that more people would do the same.
By the way, Brittany-Ann, do you happen to go to Morgantown? Just curious, because when GGW came to town and threw a party, a couple of my friends investigated the commotion and found it was a total sausage-fest. Maybe it was like that at many of their stops, who knows?

Sorry about the double-post. My internet connection is erratic.
Ok, but Marc is right. I get the argument about treating everyone fairly but like look what has been done to us! They don't treat us as humans, so why the hell should we treat them like humans? Where has our compassion gotten us? Nowhere! Only when we stand up and fight, like the Suffragettes or the Black Panthers does anyone care. This world does not respect compassion, it respects might and power. Direct action gets change not considering your opponents feelings, I'm not talking about brutality but vengefulness. We have to fight not negotiate. We have spent way too long talking it out with people who have no humanity or empathy. Girls Gone Wild is more like Girls Gone Brain-Dead. That was an awful joke.
Personally, I fully agree with Cunnus777, I think we do need to take a more aggressive approach instead of negotiating because obviously that gets nowhere. This is kind of a pointless comment.
But I love you all.

I didnt mean to post three times
sorry :(
Has no one entertained the notion that this man might be innocent of the charges against him? That's my point, that he might be innocent, so if he is, he would be undeserving of having his reputation damaged in this way. Since we do not know for sure one way or another, the safe bet is to treat him as if he was innocent until he's been proven guilty. As far as vengefulness goes, there is no vengefulness if the man turns out to be innocent; there is only brutality.
Where do you think a lack of compassion will get you? It'll only get you a reaction, and it likely won't be the kind of reaction you desire. Aggression begets counter-aggression. You make the mistake of believing that holding compassion and empathy and fighting for your beliefs are mutually exclusive. You speak of the Black Panthers, and I counter with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Who's more revered today, and who's given more credit for advancing the cause of civil rights?
Holding compassion and empathy for those you fight against makes one a more effective fighter, I feel. At the very least, it's incentive to avoid collateral damage, which, tying back to this case, would translate into not being so hasty to damage a potentially innocent man's reputation. The key word is potentially, as I'm not saying he's definitely innocent. Avoiding collateral damage in a conflict reduces the backlash against your movement. Don't be too hasty to judge, because it's harmful to your credibility.
In regards to wishing violence and sexual assault on these guys: shouldn't we seek to be better than the people we despise- not to emulate their actions?
Wishing evils on a person isn't right, wishing justice on them is.
I do agree with the sentiments that he is "innocent until proven guilty",but since there was no actual sex (i.e. little evidence), isn't this a case of victim/witnesses versus alleged perp? Is there really going to be any additional evidence brought into this case, or will his defense be a matter of "well, she was in GGW, so clearly she wanted it!" and if the judge buys that crap? Unless of course the victim ends up dropping the case because of...pressure of some kind.
Anyway, even if he isn't a sex offender, he's still an asshole. (Not that it make him guilty. It just means I don't like him and if it's found guilty I'll hate him even more).
But I don't think the eye-for-an-eye sentiments are really going to get us anywhere. The anger is understandable (completely). But I think how we choose to use it is what separates us from them. (Though the temptation to wish for that kind of ironic justice is strong, I admit.)

Martin Luther King? I counter with Malcolm X. Why do you think Dr King is more popular? Because the ruling party wanted us to think that change comes from non-violence and peace, from considering your oppressors feelings when it does not. King was lionized because to blurred and denounced Malcolm X, when in fact he did far more for the Black Movement than King did. We were fed the line that Ghandi pushed the British out of India, when it was in fact the violence and direct action of the Muslim League. And how did the women get the vote? Not from the benevolence of the state, but from direct action. As for whether or not he's guilty, he's a class enemy anyway, he helps in creating a culture where women are objectified and dehumanized. I don't understand what more the antifeminists have to do to us for us to wake up. THEY ARE OUR OPPRESSORS. We are weakened by our compassion, if we are unable to castigate and punish - not brutality but justice.
I don't care about their neverending backlash because I am willing to sacrifice my life, I couldn't care less about my credibility, they hate us no matter what we fucking do. I say with pride and power, I push them aside, I say with my compassion reserved for the weak and in need I can dismantle the callous. Fuck credibility, what credibility do they have? I don't care if my movement isn't on the front of Time magazine or whatever bullshit, I care if its alive in the streets and if it is fat on our tongues. We are not propagandists, we are dissenters, I am not here to make friends with them, where does that get us? NOWHERE. I don't want to recruit the misogynists or make them love us, I want to fight and destroy them and whoever else is my enemy to freedom. Like I said, this isn't an advert, its a phenomenon.
Malcolm X was a proponent of segregation and held racist beliefs against white people. He fought the racism of society with more racism, which did nothing to solve the problem at large. He didn't believe white society and black society could coexist. It seems to me that you hold similar beliefs, but with regards to feminism. That's an awfully radical (and I feel doomed) mentality, to favor domination over cooperation. It doesn't seem that you know just who you're fighting against, and that could pose problems for your objectives.
But I heard you loud and clear when you said you'd be willing to fight against innocent people to ensure your objectives are met (of course assuming for the sake of argument that the man is innocent). Good luck finding such a dedicated following.
Enjoy!!

No, I didn't say I would fight against 'innocent' men - but the definition of 'innocent' for a man in male-supremist society is surely clouded at best. I have lost faith in seeking a harmonious conclusion with men or the state or whatever we shall term the enemy because experiences in my own life and the experiences of women and children around me attest to something different, and I am unable to find this so-called 'feminist man'? Why shouldn't we be able to exact revenge? Alas, I am not brutal or callous I confess that most women are not, and faced with the opportunity to eviscerate legions of wife-batters and rapists I probably couldn't do to them what they have to done us and to me, and where does that leave me? Without wrath, how can I help anyone?
And also just to note, Malcolm X believed in segregation given the circumstances he lived in, where blacks were lynched, raped and beaten, where they were enslaved for fuck sake! How is that racism?!?! That is retaliation! He didn't go out with the boys and hang some whites, he wanted to be left alone, unharassed by us! This is typical bourgeoise rhetoric. When will you not castigate us? When we turn the other cheek every time you strike us?
FYI: If you had read up, Malcolm reverted to equality after he saw the first time in his life racial harmony while at Mecca on the pilgrimage. Until I see men and women functioning happily, I will never surrender!
And what makes you think I haven't already found my loyal foot-soldiers? Haha, do not be so presumptive....perhaps the earth will quake beneath your state.
Oh, excuse me, I realise that I didn't really address anything you said as I was taken aback by the Malcolm X slander. Let me clarify, I don't seek domination, rather I seek protection which given the nature of man or the inculcated nature of man will involve some degree of aggressive response, that does not mean domination it means protection. There's quite a difference. I am not brutal, callous or a meglomanic who wishes to affirm the wetness of my cunt via battle or what the fuck ever, I just want freedom for my kin. I know who I am fighting against, I am not a fucking moron, I am fighting against men and all the man-made bullshit like states and the dicktum of profit over people. I don't want domination, because I really don't want or need men around, I cannot dominate what is not around me. I am a separatist - an opinion forged through experience.
Hi there! I'm a month-long lurker of feministing. Love the site!
I had to comment today because this is absolutely disgusting. I can't even watch TV after midnight without having to watch those damn commercials. I think it's worth mentioning yet again that all these GGW guys profit nicely off the fact that underage girls are making half-drunk decisions to undress. And they get, what, baseball caps? T-shirts? Not exactly a fair trade off. I'm not surprised there's been such a slew of rape charges; does anybody here think that's an honest line of work?
And, with the same evasion to derail, I'll merely echo kaylagrrl here and say feminists wishing rape/extreme violence/etc. upon anyone, even GGW losers, simply reinforces the systems of dominance that oppress women. We need to keep in mind that it's the people that buy GGW tapes who are continuing to support this kind of behavior on the part of the producers/cameramen/etc.
Cunnus777 i agree with you.
I have always thought of GGW as a scourge. The fact that it was marketed as more 'wholesome' entertainment - back when it started - than hardcore fair was unbelieveable. When men as a society have reached a point where they can enjoy watching young drunk girls being predated on by a sociopath with a camera and see it as more clean entertainment than their hardcore porn i think they have utterly and completely lost perspective.
the ads just kept coming, joe francis's empire kept expanding and men and boys didn't notice how sick the whole thing was cause the girls in the ads were shown dancing around drunk looking 'happy'.
I was so embarassed as a youth when these ads would come on late night tv. Embarassed cause my father found them "cute" as well.
But he, like so many men, always finds it cute when the girls are catering to men's sexual needs. Whether or not that infringes on her rights is a matter that I don't think many of them at all have even bothered to contemplate.
I don't even want to think about what it will be like that a whole generation of men who grew up with GGW will be raising daughters.
Thanks Ibizao1! :] It means a lot to me to hear a woman say that!
In Support And Solidarity,
Christina

Somehow I don't think that legislation would help this problem. If a court rules that GGW is illegal, then you can bet they'll do it anyway - underground, where we can't monitor it.
I could be wrong, but I'm generally against making things illegal.
GGW is disgusting. We all know that. But I agree with puckalish and kaylagrrl.
Wishing rape on men won't make us even-stevens. It makes us just as cruel as the men who wish for women to be raped, or who say they were asking for it. And women are just as cruel as men, on a personal level. I refuse to see any major differences between men and women. We have more in common that we have to separate us.
Men and Women both have the capacity for anger, cruelty, and sadism. Women have the potential to become rapists. If we demean and 'other' men to the extent that we view them as pieces of meat, then we are no better.
Equality cannot be accomplished by dragging men into the rape culture, it can only be accomplished when rape culture is dead. Rape culture will die when human beings are compassionate enough to never wish rape on another, not even a rapist. No one deserves rape.
Just as no-one deserves to be put to death for murdering someone. Everyone has a right to life, a rape-free life. We need to focus on eliminating this culture that hates women - isolating its sources and manifestations so that we can start making changes to our lives.
Leonidas, you are missing the point. We are not at war with Matthew O'Sullivan, or Joe Francis, or the GGW franchise... we are the victims of RAPE CULTURE. We are oppressed by a world-wide system of male dominance. This is not about wishing violence on innocent men who haven't had their day in court. This is about fighting back, aggressively, against a system that holds the threat of sexual violence over women's heads. It's easy to make half-hearted calls for compassion and non-violence when you are a member of the dominant group. I wish we women would stage a massive uprising against patriarchy, but unfortunately too many of us are brainwashed into believing it's the correct way.
leonidas, how can you be a pacifist if you believe in defending your property? That's not pacifistic.
anyway.. SarahMC I agree.
But it's a treacherous road, calling women brainwashed. They don't like it. No one likes having their decision making skills called into question. But it's true- many women are brainwashed and ignorant, perpetuating rape culture and calling it liberation. It just irks me that they have the audacity to parade around under the flag of feminism.
