Last week I got an email from the Family Research Council containing a WARNING from Big Tony Perkins about "a series of videos" produced by a Planned Parenthood affiliate in Washington state that were "so revolting that members of my staff were visibly shaken."
What scary reproductive health topics were so disgusting? Were they close-up videos of STIs? Images of two men kissing? Even worse! They featured a girl talking, without shame, about touching herself! Gasp! If you can bear it, watch the offending video (I think it's pretty work-safe. But, Family Research Council warns, "the material is highly inappropriate for adults."):
The great irony, to me, is that this video is promoting abstinence from partner-sex. Conservative groups like the Family Research Council are usually all about that message. Apparently not when it means women are enjoying their bodies without shame.
Transcript after the jump, along with a special video dedication to Tony Perkins.
Gal 1: Hey guys
Gal 2: Hey
Gal 3: You wanna come to a party?
Gal 1: I kinda have plans.
Gal 2: Do you have a date?
Gal 1: Kind of.
Gal 3: Who's the lucky one?
Gal 1: Me, actually. I thought I'd stay in tonight. Probably do a little... strumming the banjo.
Gal 3: Oh! [Laughs.]
Gal 1: What? I like me. I like spending time with me. You know what? Tonight I think I wanna go all the way with me.
Gal 2: Unbelievable.
Gal 1: Plus, it's not like I can get me pregnant or give me diseases or anything.
Mustache Man: Guys, guys, abstinence can be a beautiful thing, all right? It's kind of like being a virgin all over again. But you know it's not easy. So you should give your friend here a little bit of support. How about a hug? Well, go on.
[Gals hug.]
This one's for you, Tony:

I love pro-female masturbation messages, but what's up with creepy mustache guy? I don't know, there's something about his presence that still seems to signal that women need male approval before all things sexual, even when flying solo.
Also, maybe the "Family Research Council" *gag* is upset over the comment about being a virgin "all over again." As in, you've had sex before. But maybe it kind of sucked, so now you'd like to do a little experimenting to find out what you like. Oh wait, but that would be about pleasure, not babies. Clearly evil.
That unbelievably tame, not at all graphic or vulgar video is what caused staff at the FRC emotional trauma? How the HELL could one be visibly shaken by that?
I'm not sure I understand the role that man (in the video) plays, though? Who is he supposed to be? And why does he imply that the woman masturbates because she's sexually abstinent?
The message is great, the creepy mustache guy is not. I would've thought it would be the video of the mustache guy advising his young friend to wear a condom when getting a blow job from another guy that the FRC had a problem with. Maybe they missed that one. I think I'll go check out that website now!
Somehow the presence of CMG (creepy mustache guy) reminds me of the dances where the girls pledge their virginity to their dads. I mean, if a man had to be involved in this ad, why couldn't it have been a Brad-Pitt lookalike? No, it had to be a father-like figure giving his blessing to masturbation.
Also - why would anyone want to be a virgin again? My life pre-sex and post-sex were not dramatically different. And I'm way cooler now than I was then. I mean, I would get that line if the video had been made by a right-wing group, but from a Planned Parenthood affiliate?
Did you see the url at the bottom of the video? TakeCareDownThere.org? I think that's hilarious, and am off to check it out.
Oh yes. I can see where Tony got offended! That video, how graphic!
It's just depressing how people look at female masturbation as disgusting but see it as a normal thing for boys to do. It's frigging natural, maaaaan!
Yeah, they had me until the 'stache entered. That just...disturbed me.
If you watch the rest of the videos, CMG isn't quite so creepy. And I love this video of their sort of mission statement.
I do like the other videos, especially the fact that one of them actually implies a guy giving another guy a blow job, but CMG is still creeping me out.
Maybe Big Tony was commenting on the awkward setup, terrible acting, and mustachioed creep? Oh, and the pink t-shirts.
Love the message, hate the delivery. I hope they keep trying.
Yeah... CMG is as the name implies creepy.
Also, is it just me or does the "How bout a hug?" thing seem a little porn director? "Okay, now rub your breasts together. That's it."
Also, what's with the pink? Since when do women all wear the same pink shirt to signify that they are in fact female?
The ones with guys have them wearing a sky-blue shirt, fwiw: http://www.youtube.com/user/TakeCareDownThere
The only exception is "Threesome", where there's one man and one woman and they're both wearing beige shirts, and CMG appears in bed between them (don't have nightmares, folks).
I didn't like this video. Not because I thought it was graphic, but because of:
1) All of the pink t-shirts
2) Mustache Man's "Stamp de Approval"
3) "How about a hug?" (Because that's what girls do, I guess. We hug it out.)
4) That weird comment about being a virgin again
Not to mention the very bad acting. I'll give them credit for trying, but I hope they work on future videos to stamp out stereotypes.
Gosh, my guess for HPV was homophobic papalencyclical virus.
But now I get CMG -- he's humping for MERCK. "There's a vaccine, and you should totally get it. It's most effective before you become sexually active." Corporate fascist bastard.
Yay for female masturbation, nay for the actors.
Still, I like to call masturbation abstinence with benefits. :)
I watched this twice and I still can't figure out what the director was going for once they brought in the weird mustache man. I can't figure out if he is supposed to be taken seriously. If he is then this video is really creepy. It implies that "father knows best" as he enters the scene to verify what the girl says (and make that idiotic statement about virginity) and then give the group directions while being overly touchy and yes, he did sound like a perv when he directs the girls to "give each other a hug". However, my other take on this is that it was intended to be tongue in cheek? The way he says "guys, guys" twice seems slightly overdone and when he puts his hand on the girl's shoulder it kind of looks like she gives it a disgusted look. In that case the virgin statement would be intended to sound stupid. The reality of this clip is that the acting and script are so bad that I couldn't figure out what the writer/director intended. Pro-masturbation messages (especially for females) are needed but this video doesn't cut it. On a lighter note I also find it weird that the girl is not going to go out because she is staying in to masturbate. They make it sound like masturbation is a four hour commitment. I know they are stressing the whole "love myself" but I think of masturbation as a little part of weekly life and not some big event I plan for and keep my evening free for. I also didn't care for "strumming the banjo".
I second CATBs dislike of this video.
There would have been better ways to bring this message across. Also I am unsure of how other people masturbate but to me it doesn't mean i have to take a whole evening off. A little at a time can go a long way. But that's just me.
Well I have to say I am surprised at the video. First of all, I appreciate that PP is able to present different viewpoints on sex...too often they are mislabeled as evil bastions of abortion when that is really not what they are about. And secondly, there is obviously nothing shocking about this, except for the creepy man and the awkward pedophile vibe I get. I was almost expecting him to tell the other girls to give her a hand in "strumming her banjo."

Upon first viewing 'CMG' is indeed pretty creepy. However, upon second veiwing my gut instinct tells me (without any research to back me up) that this piece: CMG, Pink Shirts, et al are intended as satire/parody of the very videos the Council & the like are putting out to their target audience.
I know it made me laugh!
I agree with SargassoSea. If you visit the takecaredownthere.org site and watch the other videos, it's clear that they are having fun with the awkward tone of much of the sex education (or misinformation) teenagers encounter in school. Comical Mustache Guy is in the role of the dorky phys ed teacher who is usually tasked with giving these kinds of talks. If you watch all the videos together, you'll note the emphatic eye-rolling among the girls and boys while CMG gives pointers on getting tested for STIs or the importance of condoms for boy-on-boy fellatio. I think the eye-rolling and awkwardness acknowledges that for most folks, it is difficult to talk about many of these things, which may put nervous and uncertain viewers at ease.
I agree with most of these comments, and I can honestly say that I WAS disturbed by this. If they were aiming for satire, they need to go back and look up the defnition of the word before shooting another ad. This is very demeaning to women, as CATB and Cicada Numph suggest. I hate that PP thinks they have to produce something this moronic to get their message out. I could see young women actually AVOIDING making use of PP services after seeing ads like this.
Whatever they are doing with the CMG, they need to stop. He is the embodiment of Creepy. I would certainly NOT want to masturbate after having an encounter like this with that guy. WTF is he in this conversation for anyway? In my reality, if a guy tried to introduce himself uninvited into a group of women talking about masturbation, they would tell him to F*** off. THAT would have made a great ad!
Also, I think the idea that you need a man's approval for anything involving your own body or sexuality is disgusting. Furthermore, masturbation is a fabulous personal experience and shouldn't be treated like it's something you have to get "support" to do. And, yes, WTF is up with having to "stay in" all night to do it? This had to have been written by a man, it does not relate to the female experience AT ALL and I don't find it even a little funny - it makes my skin crawl. "Wag of the finger" to PP for missing the mark completely!
Things like this make me happy I'm joining my universitys VOX. Loved Planned Parenthood!
oops, thats "love"
Heh. Weird. After watching the other TakeCareDownThere video posted by x364173, I think maybe CMG is supposed to be ... funny? Like we're supposed to laugh at what a tactless dope he is and how he's incredibly uncool and pops up at awkward times but has this good advice?
That was kind of what I got out of it. Somehow it reminds me of the Trojan condom commercials, where Trojan Man awkwardly pops up while the couple is getting busy to remind them to use a condom.
Anyway. I don't really like it, either. Not that clever. However, Tony Perkins is a moron.

...Sorry, just had to get that out of my system.
The fact that some people find these videos "so revolting that members of my staff were visibly shaken" makes me realize, yet again, that there are people in the US today who live in a totally different world than I do. These are revolting? I think the Famly Research Councils' collective heads would explode if they watched a week of HBO. And HBO is tame.
I agree the message is great! The video is creepy. Pink t-shirt, weird mustache guy....ew.

I second that.
For everyone that finds Moustache Guy creepy, I highly recommend checking out the rest of the videos in the series (they’re very entertaining, which says a lot considering the subject matter and intended audience). This video was clearly meant to be part of a series and does not stand up well alone. He didn’t seem at all creepy in the context of the other videos, to me anyway. Of course, your viewing pleasure may vary, and you may find CMG still creepy, but I can almost guarantee you’ll have fun watching them.
CMG aside, I think we’re all in agreement that there is nothing in the series that warrants responses like:
It’s "so revolting that members of my staff were visibly shaken."(yeah, I was visibly shakin’ too...with laughter!)
OR
“the material is highly inappropriate for adults." (yet, it seems perfectly suitable for teenagers and/or young adults)
CMG left me visibly shaken!
The entire concept of female masturbation is so taboo, that it's impossible to have an open discussion about it without getting laughed at. I don't even know what you're supposed to do anyhow.
"Sex can wait! Masturbate!"
Sorry, that was my first thought. I have to say, I like the stance taken that women can masturbate and experience pleasure. The commercial, however, somehow degrades it. Phrases like "strumming the banjo" and then the CMG to say it's okay. Please. I have to applaud their stance, but the deliverance was just...bothersome.

I think the "highly inappropriate for adults" comment was particularly revealing on the part of the FRC. It shows they seriously don't believe that even adults have the capacity to receive information about sex without becoming some kind of crazed sex monster. They seriously believe they should be able to screen information for adults, who don't have the capacity to actually handle information and form their own opinions.
This is why I call "crypto-fascist" on these fucktards.
After actually watching the video (my computer was having problems), they dropped just short of having it be an innovative commercial for masterbation. The virgin element made it seem like it had a right-wing taint to it. The guy in the commercial made me want to gag. Ewww!

I agree that it was revealing, but I'm more of the mind that they believe female sexuality is dirty, disgusting, and downright immoral. How else could their staff be "visibly shaken" by this lame, cheesy video that could easily have been part of my Jr. High sex ed class?
Is that mustachioed man, perhaps a founder of the website or state official? Otherwise, he's confusing me and sort of grossing me out. Anyone else think the girls get noticeable uncomfortable around him? And he seems to enjoy their hugging a bit too much.
Buuuuuut I'm confused about what's so upsetting. It's corny, but not graphic. Hell, it's not even explicit. They use a cute euphemism. I can think of way worse ones than that.
Anyone else want to!
I'll start with "flicking the bean"
:D (I'm so proud of myself).
I don't see anything wrong with mastrubation, but I DO see a LOT wrong with this stupid video:
1. What's with the "GUYS!" talk ..They are GIRLS!!!!! for goodness sake, isn't that the whole point of the video..that threw me off more than a bit! The moustache men even calls them GUYS..how stupid, sexist and downright annoying is that? If you want to make a video about loving yourself, how about FIRST getting the gender speech correct.

As far as I can tell, the worst thing about this ad is the production values.
Hilarious!
