Congratulations Thomas Beatie!

Well, if by "just" you mean "almost a month ago," then yeah. The baby was born June 29. :)

I didn't see what the big deal about this birth was. The nation knows there are transgendered people out there. And that some of them have parts that don't line up with how they identify. I suppose it was just the first one to hit the major media, and because Beatie looks so male.

A congratulations out to them, though, for not shying away from sharing their news, and for having a healthy baby.

Cyber-cigars on me!

The best thing about this is the cognitive dissonance that the RTL jerkbags must be having trying to reconcile their predominant transphobia with their beliefs on the proper use of female reproductive organs.

Something I didn't see reported and have been curious about: I've got a few FtM friends and they are all taking testosterone in some for or another. Did Mr. Beatie go off his T in preparation for giving birth, wouldn't any dose of hormone with enough efficacy be potentially harmful to the fetus?

Yeah, this was weeks and weeks ago.

Glad for him, though.

Destra, just because most people know that transgendered people exist doesn't mean they really know a whole lot about them and their lives.

Logrus: I seem to remember reading that Mr. Beatie had been off testosterone for several months before becoming pregnant and stayed off it for the gestation. Several doctors were consulted and none of them projected any harm to the fetus.

Morgan La Fey: Thanks!

She's so beautiful! And big, too. I'd heard that he had given birth, but hadn't heard how the baby was doing. It's nice to know everyone is happy and healthy.

Thomas and Nancy have handled all of the press around this birth so gracefully. More power to them for being able to deal with the entire nation watching their pregnancy.

Good for the two of them.

No. Good for the THREE of them. :D

My bad! It was a a few weeks back. Thanks commenters for catching that. For some reason the story hit today on some mainstream media outlets.

And Logrus, he did stop taking T a while back (I believe maybe more than year) to prepare for the pregnancy.

The big deal was he was the first person identifying as male known to give birth. He did it with the female reproductive system he was born with, which made it less newsworthy to some.

Congratulations and good luck to him and his family. I believe from the interviews I have read or seen that most people around them, including neighbors, are supportive, and hope it continues.

Re Destra:

If it wasn't such a big deal, there wouldn't have been the huge media hoopla there was. It sparked discussions from all sorts. The fact that you are reading this site suggests you are probably more familiar with/open to minority groups than the average person is. I think that most people associate transsexuals with drag queens on stage, rather than average people living their lives.

Another thing I would like to respond to is the statement "And that some of them have parts that don't line up with how they identify." I don't necessarily think that identifying as a man and having female anatomy 'don't line up.' I think that's part of what some people struggled to grasp in this man's situation. He could get pregnant and give birth via female anatomy while still retaining his identity as a man.
