Fox trashes Michelle Obama: The lowlight reel
via Michelle Obama Watch, this video from Brave New Films is a stomach-churning reel of all the vile Fox News clips about Michelle Obama. We've blogged about several of these individual incidents, but it's pretty appalling to see them all put together like this:
Isn't it depressing that the election is still months away and already there are this many examples? Brave New Films has a rundown of what's in the video, and a petition you can sign to tell Fox to stop the racist, sexist smears.

A "terrorist fist jab"???
Honestly?
A "terrorist fist jab"???
Honestly?
You know, I have to say all this crap Fox is trying to do to make Michelle look bad just makes me like her more. And seriously, they must have shot themselves in the foot with the terrorist fist-jab thing- it just makes them look crazy. Crazier.
I don't know about anyone else, but the terrorist fist jab is now MY favorite way of greeting my friends.
I really feel bad about how the media is portraying Michelle. I was with the Obama campaign before it was cool more than a year ago, and I loved listening to Michelle. She was so inspiring as a woman--witty, outspoken, career-oriented, concerned with her children... I was thinking about what an example she would be as first lady for young girls. Then I started getting phonecalls from my ultra-conservative grandparents who only listen to Fox about how she's a Black Panther or something. It's the classic example of how a man could speak up without reprimand, but a woman (especially an African America woman) is seen as inelegant and even malicious.
Yeesh.
I hate Fox News! My close minded conservative Republican parents watch it all the time and I find it repulsing. Michelle Obama is a highly educated, hardworking attorney who shoul be given some respect!
Yep. The commentator who called it a "terrorist fist jab" never offered an explanation for the comment. From what I understood, she was removed from her position after the incident but still holds a job with Fox. It really irks me how people try use the (false) notion of Arabness or Muslimness as damning features of Obama's campaign. "Othering," as the one commentator in this video said.
why they hell don't they sue fox for slander? i mean, there is a LINE. and maybe for discrimination...
Ugh, it really is overwhelming to see all of this together in one video. What makes me angry about this is that they're attacking her for being unpatriotic, when really she is just being honest--America is mean and greedy compared with a lot of other cultures and I think it's something that we as Americans need to try to face and change. I applaud her for being so honest.
And something to think about: if she were white, would she be attacked as much?
I don't know if Michelle Obama would be attacked if she were white, but there are certainly many whites who get attacked as, or for. not being patriotic enough.
Personally, she could have left off the "for the first time in my adult life" part, but that's her, and the Obama campaign will need to deal with how her honesty resonates with the American public still in denial. Many Americans are not ready to deal with what is "really" wrong with this country - and I'm not talking about oil or the economy - and any campaign that really addresses it would be in serious trouble.
