The fact that opposing viewpoints are available in the public marketplace of ideas is a good thing and one of the strengths of our open society. I don't think it is productive to suggest to those with whom you disagree to "shut up".

Although I agree with your politics more than Limbaugh's I will defend his right to utilize his forum to express his views.

Well Orchid, given that Limbaugh has been anointed with vast riches and a huge pulpit from which to spew his racism and evil I think "shut up already!" is a valid response. You'll note that Courtney is not trying to pressure the FCC to take him off the air, which is a tactic many conservatives have used against people they disagree with.

"Shut up Rush" is a wonderful and necessary expression of free speech in a society that has become less open simply because the very wealthy can afford to manipulate mass media in their own interests.

I never saw the friday fuck you's as necessarily being a forum used to debate as much as a forum to vent. They have been one of my favorite features of this site ever since they started for that reason. So often I find myself yelling "exactly" at my computer screen when the speaker hits the nail on the head of exactly how I'm feeling. Samhita, did make the valid point about how he should use his position responsibly. He should actually be making valid points instead of just spreading propaganda and making stupid racist, sexist jokes. Enough people take him seriously that he really needs to own up to his responsibility. The fact that so many people allow this idiot to shape their political views is just disgusting.

When Mr. Limbaugh starts making rational and well-thought points to begin with, expect valid and rational counterpoints from feminists.

Am I missing something? I've never watched one of these before but the captions seemed really strange to me. Even if they are supposed to be sarcastically humorous, they seem to really undermine what Samhita is saying.

As for orchid's argument: comparing a short, one-time video by relatively-unknown Samhita (no offense! though I think you would say the same yourself, Samhita) and the weekly (daily?) radio emissions by a guy with the support of fame, millions of dollars and one of the few (and therefore gigantic) media corporations left in this country is laughable. And the suggestion that Samhita saying "fuck you" and "shut up" is somehow silencing Rush Limbaugh is even more ridiculous.

Unfortunately I was stuck on a 12 hour car trip with my conservative mother while she was listening to Rush...everytime he spoke I twitched. He's offensive, and racist, and sexist. I ran out of power on my Zune and bam...I was stuck. He makes no legitimate arguments or even ones that have a basis in fact. He claims to be able to debate the points of anything he brings up but in actuality he cuts off callers and spews the same crap to every argument. He deserves every Fuck You I can find in me...he is part of the reason that so many refuse to call themselves feminists...because they are ugly, ball-breaking, man-hating women...he perpetuated the term Feminazi so far that that is what so many hear instead of feminist. If he were stating his honest political opinion then that would be one thing but he spews hate and bigotry...he gets all the fuck yous that he can get.

I want him to lose the support of the masses, of money, of radio stations. I want there to be an actual choice between left and right viewpoints on the radio, and to not have the rightwing viewpoint be things like calling people "feminazis". That will silence him too.

Ugh, I listened to Bob Garfield interview the reporter who wrote the NYT piece yesterday on On the Media and the reporter was being totally disingenuous. Garfield kept asking him pointed questions about the sort of things that Rush says, and the reporter would just beg off saying "oh, I don't know about those things."

You wrote a ten-page piece on the New York Times Magazine and you didn't bother researching his more controversial statements?

He also liked to beg off saying it was sarcarm or irony or opinion.

Rush Limbaugh said that the Native American populations are doing better now than they were when Christopher Columbus intially landed. This is a flat-out lie--Rush is not trying to pass it off as irony, or sarcasm, or opinion, he's trying to pass a flat-out lie as fact. And that's just one example of his dipshittery.

He was the template from which the likes of Bill O'Reilly, Sean Hannity, Michael Savage, etc were created. He is reponsible for the complete breakdown of political discourse in this country. He deserves the hearties Fuck You that we can muster.
