Don Imus: Still racist
Don Imus, whose oh-so-charming "nappy headed hos" comment last year got him fired (and rehired) from his radio show, has once again proven him to be a grade-A asshole and racist.
During a conversation about [Dallas Cowboys cornerback Adam] Jones' run-ins with the law, Imus asked, "What color is he?" Sports announcer Warner Wolf said Jones — formerly known as Pacman — is "African-American." Imus responded: "There you go. Now we know."
Imus is trying to defend his comments by saying he was making a "sarcastic point." Uh huh.

He's a total d-bag.
But I still defend his First Amendment right to his douchebaggery. Especially as someone who actually DOES make sarcastic comments that frequently get taken the wrong way.
Given Imus' history of racist comments, lets not give him the "maybe it got taken wrong" treatment. My sarcasm gets taken the wrong way as well, but c'mon...
Defending First Amendment rights means I don't want the government to regulate what Imus (or I!) am saying. It doesn't mean we just let him say it without response. When a racist or a sexist or a homophobe (or any other messed up person) says something that reveals their truely disgusting views, we should make sure everyone knows just how terrible it was. I say: Re-fire Imus!
Does anyone have a transcript of this airing, other than the quote that was posted here? When I saw coverage of this on a local NY station on Monday (before he did any damage control), there was more to this quote; something along the lines of how Pacman was only being arrested multiple times because he's black. Even if it wasn't eloquent, I think that was more of the point he was going for and I wish anyone was covering this story in context...
And, for the full disclosure, his clarifying remarks on Tuesday:
"What people should be outraged about is that they arrest blacks for no reason," he said. "I mean, there's no reason to arrest this kid six times."
I'm not the biggest fan of Imus in general, but he deserves full, fair coverage just like anyone else...
I have to say I'm glad this is just a short fyi-type of post. The mainstream media is taking up enough time with this asshole, and I think far more than opening people's eyes to racism in America, the focus on Imus is seriously detracting from the reality of what goes on and giving anyone on the fence a reason to think all us feminists and the like are oversensitive radicals and use phrases like "politically correct" as if they're four-letter words.
I was at Rutgers last year during the whole media explosion surrounding Imus and the basketball team, and I really wish there was more dialogue about the issues and not about whether or not one single solitary man should be fired. He's probably the least of our problems - especially now - because he falls under that Rush Limbaugh kind of douchebaggery where you don't even take him seriously. Still a threat? Yes. What the media should focus every racial discussion on? NO. He's a scapegoat. Now everyone gets to say "...but at least we're not as bad as Imus!"
But I digress. Like a lot. I could go on for days like this.
You know who else getting his show back? Dog the Bounty Hunter.
I just hope Pacman has the balls to say that he doesn't care what an ugly old buffoon like Imus has to say. I wish the women at Rutgers had said that instead of saying that his ill-advised comments hurt them.
Rule Number One: Don't give the assholes the power to hurt you.
I won't defend Imus, because I think he's a prick, but I will say this:
His racism is clearly a side effect of his terrible sense of humor.
Clearly, the fact that he's on the air is indicative of a larger problem: people actually want to listen to this bigot.
I actually think the controversy over what he said the first time was a bit unnecessary. I've heard and seen much worse that never got any publicity or backlash. At the same time, he seems like a dumb-ass for continuing to make such comments. After temporarily losing his job and pretty much being paraded as a racist on national TV for weeks, you would think he would at least pretend to respect black people.
I've actually heard part of what follows that quote. He goes on to say that they seem to have arrested him because he's black, thus making a point that black men are often racially targeted by police. I still don't like this Imus guy, but I think we should be focusing our attention to actually bigotry and not the misinterpreted comments one of nothing radio guy.

So you don't want the government to regulate his freedom of speech but you want him fired because he said something you didn't like?
Hypocrite.
I actually think that this time, Imus is getting treated unfairly.
When I first read the transcript, I took it as him making the point that the only reason Pacman was pulled over was because he was black (a problem my ex-boyfriend had a lot cause he's black and lives in a nice neighborhood). I believe that Imus totally fucked up his delivery, and I can easily see how it would be taken the wrong way.
