CEO Barbie Criticized For Promoting Unrealistic Career Images - The Onion: "Toy company Mattel is under fire from a group of activists who say their popular doll's latest incarnation, CEO Barbie, encourages young girls to set impractical career goals."

First Female General Nominated - Feministing Community (Marc): "I'd say it's the beginning of a very critical start in the equalization of genders in the military. One of the reasons I decided to stay in after eight years of service, almost to the date, is because I realize that in society where rank does matter, that those who have a bit of rank can affect the people below them. Patriarchal as it is, the military leaves some room for change - and it is up to those in the military, with what little bit of rank they have, to change the culture."

Unfetter women's intellect on campaign trail - Newsday: "Media coverage everywhere is "Michelle vs. Cindy." Where do they buy their dresses? Do they make bacon for breakfast? And, of course, which one can we compare to Jackie O? Is anyone else as appalled as I am at how quickly we have gone back to thinking of women in the oldest of stereotypes - as only wives and mothers?"

The Loud Silence of Feminists - The Washington Post: "Michelle Obama has become an issue in the presidential campaign even though she isn't running for anything. An educated, successful lawyer, devoted wife and caring mother has been labeled 'angry' and unpatriotic and snidely referred to as Barack Obama's 'baby mama.' Democrats, Republicans, independents, everyone should be offended. And this black woman is wondering: Where are Obama's feminist defenders?"

"If she's not crying...then I did not do my job" - Women Who Serve: "In this same story, [Justin] Gimelstob goes viciously after Anna Kournikova, calling her a bitch, a douche and a scumbag. With regard to playing against her in World Team tennis mixed doubles, he says 'If she's not crying by the time she walks off that court,' then I did not do my job." That is mild, however, compared to: '...she's gonna be serving 40 miles an hour and I'm gonna be just plugging it down her throat.'"

Bratz Candy Cosmetics - Candy Blog: The doll company launches candy makeup for young girls.

Pantsuits and the Presidency - The New York Times: "Some supporters of Hillary Clinton believe that sexism colored news coverage of her presidential campaign. The Times reported in a front-page article on June 13 that many are proposing boycotts of cable news networks and that a 'Media Hall of Shame' has been created by the National Organization for Women. The Times itself, however, was barely mentioned, even though two of its Op-Ed columnists, Maureen Dowd and William Kristol, were named in the Hall of Shame."

Generation Y Refuses Race-Gender Dichotomy - AlterNet: Courtney's latest!

Judge's ban on the use of the word ‘rape’ at trial reflects trend - Kansas City Star: "It’s the only way Tory Bowen knows to honestly describe what happened to her. She was raped. But a judge prohibited her from uttering the word 'rape' in front of a jury. The term 'sexual assault' also was taboo, and Bowen could not refer to herself as a victim or use the word “assailant” to describe the man who allegedly raped her....Bowen’s case is part of what some prosecutors and victim advocates see as a national trend in sexual assault cases."

Tila Tequila: California lifted its gay-marriage ban "because of me" - Reality TV World: "Tila Tequila thinks she deserves some credit for California lifting its ban on same-sex marriages."

First off, I love the Onion.

Second off, Is it just me or did "The Loud Silence of Feminism" come off a little like all feminists are white, bitter, Clinton-supporters who have shunned Michelle Obama because Barack won the primary? I may be wrong about the white thing but she seems pissed off about nothing because every woman who I have talked to has said people are dragging both candidate's wives (especially Michelle Obama) through the dirt for no reason. I was just a little put off by her article.

You know that The Onion is a fake news site, right? :o/

The Onion article is priceless. It's rare to see satire done so well in the Internet age.

That CEO barbie article sounds like it was written as a joke... i mean come on: "This doll furthers the myth that if a woman works hard and sticks to her guns, she can rise to the top". Are you serious??? I'm sorry, can you tell me how else I am supposed to rise to the top? Oh right, I sleep my way there. Or wait, I shouldn't be there in the first place (unless I'm getting the male CEO some coffee). What a joke.
This barbie may at least be a feeble step in the right directions... though her body proportions are still the same, she has an uber short skirt, some pink roses, a pink desk, and a pink briefcase. Oh well.

Yay for the Onion! They are an incredible mirror for our society. The only problem is the people who should be reading these stories and learning from them are usually too uptight to appreciate the humor.

OMFG, are you serious? Tila Tequila, that vain IDIOT. First of all, the show SUCKED. And I say that as an out bisexual woman. It was just another "make lgbt issues into a sideshow" publicity stunt. She's just an attention-whore. I cannot believe she's taking effing CREDIT for such a huge victory for hundreds of activists! What was her "contribution" to the cause? Making a spectacle of herself for a bunch of drooling male viewers? Disgusting.

PS: The Onion is fake news.

It amuses me that Tila Tequila would think that her show would have had any factory on the lifted ban on gay-marriage.

Her show is horrid and if anything has simply further enforced the stereotype that bisexual girls are promiscuous and can not remain in a monogamous relationship.

Yes Tila, your show that includes eating the genitals of animals as a "challenge" to win your love has certainly helped to further the cause of equality in marriage laws for same-sex partners.

Tila Tequila: "Before [A Shot of Love] came out, everyone was still a little apprehensive about [same sex relationships]," Tequila told Us. "Then they realized, 'Wow, everyone is really into this stuff, and it is fine.' The next thing you know, [gay marriage] is legal."

Yeah, that's exactly how it happened. *eye roll*

Is it too late to give her back?

"I've long been frustrated, as a black woman and a feminist, with our national conversation. I didn't hear the cause speaking up for women of color or for women who have always worked in blue-collar or service jobs. Choice was not their issue."

"The woman who employed my educated mother to clean her house never quite saw her as a sister in the struggle for equality."

My mother was never part of the second wave, either, despite being what one might consider a perfect recruit or representative (master's degree WHILE pregnant with me, giving birth to me two weeks before finals; always outearning her husband till he died, achieving as both full time 70s era career woman and full time 50s style mother). She certainly knew (she told us) what she was fighting against, just for the right to attend university (three jobs to support herself and two sisters through college) and study engineering alongside men (and surpass them) over the will of her tradition minded father, or to attain a "white" position of authority as a teacher. By her reckoning, she shortchanged her career just once: when she chose family over becoming a principal (and thank God she preferred the face-to-face interaction of teaching, anyway, because that is her mark on our community). And I know from growing up in the 70s and 80s or listening to her now, that she simply cannot identify with modern feminists and "their" issues (e.g. abortion on demand, which I also support). It is too late for her. She is still a product of Christian Fundamentalism and 1950s era sensibilities (though always Democrat).

[omission]

"But in America, there's seldom a cost for disrespecting black women."

"I'm waiting for feminists who speak of second-class citizenship and being pushed to the back of the bus to remember the civil rights movement that gave birth to those words. After all, it was a black woman, Rosa Parks, who took her seat up front and pulled others there, too."

I'm a man of color with foreign ties, and cannot fail to notice and be shocked by such a divide (or silence) which manifests itself as here, among other relevant places. African-American women and feminists recently lost a great voice. I have seen some WOC threaten to foresake feminism altogether (damn) for their continued feeling of alienation. I can understand well why people will be against "A male." I upset me, too. But I will never get how concerns of feminists considered outside the mainstream (allegedly meaning: white, middle class, educated, American) seem to get lower priority, and sometimes, explicitly downplayed (or OTOH, WOC ideas get "appropriated" by the mainstream).

" . . . When an African American made a different kind of history, it seems that feminists can't share in the triumph."

I certainly agree that it seems that way, including here. BTW, I wonder if Michelle Obama will ever run for office. Say, like Clinton, or as a running mate.

"Tila Tequila thinks she deserves some credit for California lifting its ban on same-sex marriages."

If mass media is partly to blame for promoting or perpetuating anti-feminism, then mass media is also partly responsible for promoting pro-feminist ideals where they exist, as incredible as it may sometimes seem. Even I (like others)

http://www.nodecaf.net/Marisa/shera.html

will cite highly commercialized American female animated heroines as childhood inspirations regarding strong female role models. Never did get why She-Ra had to give up her weapon in order to defend herself (sword transformed into shield, etc.) however. He-Man never had to go without:

geocities.com/ultimatesheraguide/extra/sword/swordto.html

Yeah. As if she wasn't perfectly capable of carrying additional equipment or resourceful enough to use items from her surroundings as tools, the way other heroes (esp. Superman) did.

"Judge's ban on the use of the word ‘rape’ at trial reflects trend - Kansas City Star: "

I won't even start on crime or the "justice" system.

Well, Tila Tequila's not famous for her thoughtful insights or political analysis.

Re: just about everything else. Am I the only one getting irritated by all of the public so-called feminism analysis going on by political pundits at the moment? It's as though we're all lumped into one giant "feminism movement" instead of many different groups of women with similar ideas. After all we've got conservative feminists (who probably hate the term) and liberals, as well as many shades in-between. How can someone stand in front of a camera and claim to speak for us all? How can someone even use the phrases "the woman vote" or "the feminist vote"? It makes no sense. At best it's overly simplistic. At worst it's condescending.

Thank you, Kaylee.

Speaking of which, I'm looking for "conservative" or "Republican" or "pro-life" feminists who are not immediately called "anti-feminist" by readers or staff, because I want to know how that possibly works.

Spirallinglucy: "Her show is horrid and if anything has simply further enforced the stereotype that bisexual girls are promiscuous and can not remain in a monogamous relationship."

Enforces stereotypes? Bullshit. You obviously didn't see the episode where one of the guys (Dominic) said bisexuality was "just a phase".

Tila eliminated him for that.

Presidential Spouses: I really don't care about presidential spouses as human beings, (nor do I care about their spouses as human beings). I'm not evaluating who to vote for based on who is the best parent, who bakes the best apple pie, or who I'd like to have a beer with. I'm supposed to be voting based on who is best for the country.

The spouse of a canidate isn't running for president, and the only way I'd pay any attention to her is if she brings something to her husband's team. Beyond that, I really don't care.

Tila Tequila: I wish bisexuality was a stage, but only for her. Every other bisexual person could stay bisexual, but TT needs to be kicked off the team, she's making them look bad.

She's only famous for looking good, but yet, she looks more like a lightbulb everyday. It's really ironic, considering how little the lightbulb above her head goes on.

wow,

I find all the hate toward Tila Tequila very shallow.

Why are you bashing her?

"attention whore" is something used only for women. You wouldn't call falva flave an attention whore would you?

"TT needs to be kicked off the team"

I don't think anyone here decides who should be on the team.

"considering how little the lightbulb above her head goes on."

also a sexist comment about how she must be stupid.

I don't think she has had any effect on the gay marriage bill wither. But I do think her show was a window to a world nobody sees (in fact all the hyper-masculine guys I knew DID NOT like the show). Her show wasn't only about her, it was also about other gay women on the show who were not all like Tila.

I find the comments about Tila Tequila very shallow and judgmental.

"I find the comments about Tila Tequila very shallow and judgmental."

I believe it is another case of choice, except when it does not agree with my choices and opinions.

I beg to differ. People use the term to refer to both men and women all the time, including flava flave and colin farrell, among others...
