Check out Feministing 2.0...but not here

Hey all! So yeah, we didn't switch over to the new community site. Unfortunately we're still figuring out how to resolve our commenter issue, and we don't want to launch the site until every thing is a-okay. But here's the good news: We're opening up the Feministing Beta site for our readers to check out, try out and report back on. Here's the main Feministing blog, and here's the Community Blog.

This way, you can check out the new design, see what the community blog looks like and test out some features before the site goes live! If you run into any bugs or problems, please tell us about them on this thread. (And of course, we'd appreciate it if you kept your suggestions to functionality, not design.)

If you're not already a commenter on Feministing, but want to be part of the community site, you can register on the beta site and start posting on the community blog. However, if you already have a user name (one that you'd like to hold onto), you can comment over there, but we're still working on an easy way for you to post blogs. Again, a tremendous thanks for your patience.

Please remember, the beta site is not updated, you can't go there for new content (yet). This is just a space for you to check things out and poke around. We're hoping to do the final switch by the weekend.

So...what do you think?!

I'm probably one of few people who actually uses custom colors (vision problems; white backgrounds or lots of garish colors are painful), so I'm sure this doesn't matter. The new site shows me no respect, but the old one did. (And. alas, that's the way it usually goes.)

I tried to visit the new site, but it immediately crashed my browser.
Firefox 3, Mac OSX, if you want to know.
:(

Hmmm, I seem to be having some problems. It looks way screwy on my IE browser here at work. I'll take some screen capture and send in browser info once I have a chance. I'll check it on firefox once I get home.

I'm on Firefox 3, Mac OSX as well and every since yesterday when I try to view either of the sites (new or old) my browser freezes up and I get a message that a script on the page is causing problems with Adobe Flash Plater 9. It's incredibly difficult to navigate either of the pages for me, including posting this comment, but I wanted to let you all know!

Even so, I'm really excited for the new site! You'll work it out!

I can't get signed in at the new site. I tried setting up a new account, thinking maybe mine didn't transfer, but it says that another user exists with my username (which is pretty darn unlikely).

Well, I went there and created a profile. But then I found out that my profile is already created using my typekey username and my feminist blog link as the website.

I have a question. Do the the old commenters have profiles created already? If there's no such problem, who created my profile? I don't understand. Moreover, I can't say I comment regularly and my blog isn't that popular either.

I also expected that the new site design would be a different one.

Everything seems to be working ok for me. I'm also using Firefox 3 and MacOSX.

This account would not log in over at the new site, but I was able to create a new account and log in with that one.

It looks really good from what I've seen so far -- good work and thanks!

I'm on Firefox 3, Windows XP, so no problems with crashing. But I can't log in at the new site for the life of me. It won't accept either of the only 2 passwords I ever use.

InfamousQBert and Freya: Folks who are trying to set up a new profile with their old user name won't be able to - that's part of the commenter issue. We're currently trying to make it so that your existing TypeKey account will be able to do more than just comment, but write posts as well. Right now, only new profiles created can post on the community blog. We're working hard to fix this.

Freya - the logo and colors are the same, but other than that the design is pretty different, aesthetic and function wise...

It may be me, but Movable Type keeps telling me my session has ended and won't let me sign in.

Oops, for people signing in with TypeKey, make sure to to click TypeKey in the box below the sign in form where it says "sign in using..."

Maybe this is just me or my browser (FF3) or my resolution (1024 x 768), but there's a ton of extra blue space on the left margin. Like, the whole thing looks off-center. Otherwise, I think it looks great. The font size also seems to have increased, which is nice.

Question - when editing a profile, what is supposed to go in the "Password Recovery" field?

wandergrrl, it's like a hint to remind you of your password.

I normally run a Mac using FireFox 2. So far so good. I also checked it in FireFox 3 for the Mac. I didn't have the crash mentioned earlier. The Opera web browser offers a mobile device emulator and it looked pretty good there. I also took a quick run-through using the Ubuntu Linux operating system and the Konquerer browser. Ditto.

I looked at some of the backend source code and I was pleased to see that it looked reasonably accessible to a variety to devices.

One way for web developers to prove their courage is to build a highly customized community site with zillions of users, lots of different web browsers and operating systems and a great need for moderation.

My digital hat goes off to your team.

Lookin' forward to the launch!

I can't seem to edit my profile. Every time I try to save the changes, it tells me my session has ended but doesn't let me log back in.

Thanks wandergrrl, I'll let our developer know.

ditto on both counts for me, except I'm using IE. But, I don't have the Flash 9 problem at home where I use Safari on a pc.

Should we even bother registering with the beta site? Or wait for the one with the glitches fixed?

Awesome new site, but it seems to have had a dumbass-ifying effect on me. Somehow I ended up submitting a really long, impassioned comment on a post from February 2005! I was directed to that old page as soon as I signed in and only realised it was three years old after I'd commented! How embarassing. I do apologise. Please ignore that comment, mods!

The design looks weird in my browser (Win XP, Firefox 2.0.0.8) - the white background ends after about half a screen, ads are sitting across and above some text.

I'm so excited for the new site that I forgot my password! Ha!

To whom do I report an exploitable type 1 XSS hole on the new site?

Correction: it appears to be a type 2 XSS hole. That's more serious, so I'll just be sending off email and hope that it gets to the right people.

Works fine for me...

I like that users will be able to post their own blogs, but I guess I was just expecting more of a forum style rather than a blog for the members.

Kind-of like these:

http://www.tfproject.org

http://hawtymcbloggy.freeforums.org

TFP also has a "journal" for members, which is also kind of like a blog I suppose. I would just think that there could get to be a lot of blogs posted, and I wouldn't want to scroll through them all. Maybe I'm not fully understanding how the site will look?

The new site looks great, but the alignment seems to be off. The ad bar is way over on the left side (and cut off) - and you can't even scroll over.

I really like how much effort you've put into making it a community.

I hate to bring in criticism because I think you guys are doing such a great job, but I have to agree with SZJ -- is there at least going to be a cut-off for length before forcing a jump? I'm just afraid the community side will be unwieldy. If you have a bunch of users posting long entries everyday, there will be a lot of scrolling. Is it too late for you guys to figure out a way to make entries on the main community page shorter, or maybe just links to the full text?

I'm having issues with the page navagation numbers at the bottom of the community blog. I click on any of them and I still see the front page.

i don't know if y'all will make a post when the commenter issue is resolved, but i hope so.

i went to post a community blog post today and it said i was not authorized even though i was signed in as myself. grr.

I agree with SweetZoeJane and ladylinguist - the blog format is great but it is incredibly unwieldy. I'm lazy and if I don't have internet access for a day or two, I tend to scroll through the feministing page looking at the headlines and finding what appears to be the most interesting or striking.

With the community blog, there are so many more people posting that each entry should really be only a few lines before the jump and have a good, descriptive title. Otherwise, many good entries will get lost in the fray. I haven't checked for one day and I already need to scroll through 2 full pages of entries. I don't know where to start! So in terms of functionality, I'd love to see entries on the main community page comprised of:
1) a title
2) a concise description
3) a link to the full post

Although being aware of a variety of feminist issues and news is important, but sometimes, I may be fixated on a particular topic and want to read blog entries about that specific topic. Since there are so many quality community posts already and there will be many more to come, I would love to see a search function as well. Maybe have tags and keywords that can be used. I'm not computer savvy at all so I don't know how hard that is, but it would make it easier for new feministing users to find older posts that are of timeless quality.
