Quick Hit: Body as Art
The International Museum of Women continues to do amazing work online. This month the exhibit is Women, Power, and Politics and there is no shortage of inspiring art to check out. I'm especially interested in the Body as Art section, where artists from around the globe consider ways that our forms can be our medium of expression.

I'm pretty sure this piece was exhibited at the Brooklyn Museum in the Sackler Feminist Art Gallery, which opened about a year ago. The Global Feminisms exhibit that it opened with was AMAZING. Also, Damali Ayo has done some really brilliant and innovative work around race.
I think that this work is beautiful and fascinating, especially in light of the complex politics around exploitation of women's bodies, being biracial and being part of a biracial couple...it is interesting to think about what constitutes art versus exploitation, when expression is self-authored or imposed...any thoughts?
I would love to see this in person; it looks beautiful and powerful. I too, wonder about the politics of using one's body as art or expression. I'm thinking back to the Peta ads using women's bodies to make a point, which I remember getting slammed in this forum. What's the difference? In both situations, a woman is making a choice to use her own body to express a feeling or a viewpoint. Does calling one "art" make it acceptable from a feminist point of view? Full disclosure - I'm a Peta supporter who always felt that the Feministing analysis of their campaigns was superficial and too harsh. I'm curious to see the discussion about this piece in that context.
