Homophobia and Hip-hop

Check out Jay Smooth's take on the historical problem of homophobia in hip hop culture and what we often call the politics of outing or "spotting the gay." You won't regret it. I swear.

I fall in love with this guy a little bit more after every single one fo his videos.

Hip-Hop: Beyond The Beats & Rhymes is a kickass documentary, btw. If you're into musical culture, hip-hop, or just like docs you should check it out.

Chuck D, someone I've got really conflicted feelings about because of some strong antisemitism in his past comments, really demonstrates the power of examination and critical commentary. The man is captivating to me in this as Jon Stewart was when he crucified Tucker Carlson on Crossfire.

I love the last sentence--I think it is applicable to everyone, not just in hip-hop. "When... killing a man makes you more of a man, but loving a man makes you less of a man, we need to reexamine our criteria for manhood." I find this especially true, considering the recent upswing in horrible murders of gay youths by classmates/crushes/long-time harassers.

I've never seen any other videos from Jay Smooth, but I shall now seek them out. Great post!

I walked past Jay Smooth on 93rd and Columbus with my boyfriend about a month ago.

And I wish I hadn't been so shy i.e. chased his ass down the street and tried to make friends. That just sounds creepy... I'll content myself with the fact that he turned around and looked at us when my boyfriend screamed. "Yo, Illdoc!"

It was magical.

Ditto. That line made the whole video.

That was frakking awesome. This is the second video I've seen from him but now I will most definitely check out more. We need so much more of this and not just in hip-hop (but hip-hop could use a lot more of it) but in society in general. Great vid.

It seems that Jay has had this same sort of experience with other celebrities... Maybe next time you guys can introduce yourself!

Kei: because the right wingers won't allow cloning.
