Quick Hit: Take Action for Sex Ed in New York

hp_students_class_lg.jpg

New York currently has no designated funding stream for comprehensive sex education in schools, but the Healthy Teens Act will make information available to fund sex education in the state. This means school districts, BOCES, school-based health centers and community-based organizations would be able to apply for grants to develop and implement programs that will give students real sex ed.

So if you're a New Yorker, let Senate Majority Leader Joe Bruno know that New York schools need support for comprehensive sex ed.

Thanks for posting this. After Spitzer rejected Title V ab-only funding, everyone thought New York was set. But we still don't have support for communities who want to teach comprehensive sex ed. Meanwhile, the feds still funnel more than $9 million to abstinence-only programs.

The State Senate really needs to pass this. So if you all can share this with your networks, maybe we can make some noise.

I think...I think there is universal sex ed in the USA. It's called internet porn. Average age of first viewing online is what, 11 years old?

Nice job, America.

I'm PRO- NY sex ed, and PRO- sex ed for the entire continent of America.

Seriously....come to Colorado!!!!I'm 23 and I JUST recently had a comprehensive sex ed class at UNIVERSITY! Though I read about sex on my own (supplemented with web sites) I dont think it shouldve been such a desperate effort. For example, if you are to discuss sex ed curricula at the schools in my town you can CANT talk about any other forms of protection other than the male condom. Dental dams, female condoms, finger condoms are all contraband, apparently.

spike the cat,
you make a strong point... all the more reason to provide students with medically accurate information about their bodies, sex and sexuality, prevention of unintended pregnancy, and protection from sexually transmitted infections. the media (including internet outlets, porn or otherwise) provide a sex-saturated environment, but little information that empowers youth to make healthy and responsible personal choices.
