NY storage company turns "controversial" ad to charity

Anyone remember the oh-so-controversial pro-choice ad that Manhattan Mini Storage ran last year?

Well it seems that the company is taking their support of choice a step further. According to a press release from Planned Parenthood of NYC, they've committed to donating a total of $200,000 to 5 NYC charities – including PPNYC.

Send them an email to say thanks.

They're also giving to the gay and lesbian anti-violence project... and advertising about it on the subway. I love them.

I just wrote:

I just read about your fabulous pro-choice ad and your commitment to donate to several local organizations including Planned Parenthood and the gay and lesbian anti-violence project. I've been sharing the story with everyone I know, but I just wanted to write and send you my personal thanks. Thank you for your courageous voice. Thank you for your compassion. Thank you for standing up for me. Unfortunately, living in [my city], Canada means I likely won't be using your services, but I hope you are encouraged by the fact that the name and positive reputation have traveled this far.

Seeing this has just restored a little of my faith in humanity - which took a serious blow earlier today as Catholic schools bused students to Parliament Hill for an anti-choice rally and 'march of life' in Ottawa. So heart wrenching to watch hundreds of 14 year-old girls march and chant anti-choice slogans.

Thanks for posting this.

I'm moving to NYC later this summer. If I need to store stuff these are the only people I will give my money to. I love them.

That is great news! I want that billboard so bad, did when I first saw it here, too...I'd definitely put it right on my living room wall.

I wish you guys had put up the complete list of charities, but since you didn't, I will:

1. The Coalition to Ban Horse-Drawn Carriages was formed to end the cruel and inhumane conditions that Central Park Carriage Horses experience as part of everyday life, and to support an economically viable alternative to their use.

2. Planned Parenthood of NYC delivers vital health care services and education to millions annually, and has been committed to advocating for each individual's right to make informed, independent decisions for over 90 years. Your contribution will support women's rights to free choice.

3. In New York we euthanize about four thousand dogs and cats every week. Animal Haven wants to stop this senseless killing by supporting mandatory spay/neuter for New York dogs and cats. Your donation will go specifically to Animal Havens spay/neuter fund. Animal Haven also has many wonderful dogs, cats, puppies and kittens available for adoption. Visit the site to see their photos.

4. The NYC Gay & Lesbian Anti-Violence Project provides lesbian, gay, transgender, bisexual and HIV-positive victims of violence with loving support and free, confidential services.

5. Citymeals-on-Wheels provides food and human contact to homebound, elderly New Yorkers who can no longer shop or cook for themselves.

...

All of them are excellent causes.

I took my dog to Animal Haven for a play group once. It's a wonderful place. It also isn't as widely known as PPNYC and therefore less likely to get donations from other sources.

I'm on the PPNYC activist council by the way.
