The Real World Goes All Feministing on Our Asses
Speaking of (Un)Feminist Guilty Pleasures, last night Nik and I are watching The Real World, yes, it's a habit I don't seem to break, and one of the girls on the show admits to her alcoholic friend that she struggled with an eating disorder. Didn't think much of it.
Then this morning my friend Kate sends me an email:
I'm watching the Real World, and one of the girls in it (Sarah) is lying on her bed in front of a bookshelf. And I see an acid green and book spine and think, "Hey, I know that book." I slowed it down frame by frame and guess what it is? I took a picture because I was so tickled.
Yeah, that's my book people. Mind is blown. Now if we can just get Jess' books on that blonde girl's shelf...she needs a serious dose of feminism 101.

That is AWESOME! Doesn't it make you feel giddy when people listen to what you say for a change, I mean, being a woman and all?
That is awesome and VERY exciting!
Congratulations Courtney!
That's great, Courtney.
Your book was an important read for me, too. It's on my bookshelf (figuratively speaking, since I don't actually have one) next to Jessica's book.
Great eye!
I work with the Real World cast booking them for appearances so I know that generally its the production company that provides them a selection of books to read.
If you didn't provide them a comp copy then they must have thought highly enough of your book to select it for the cast.
Plus, my parents have that same pattern duvet cover.
Though the book is infinitely cooler. :)
Not to say she's a "model feminist" (whatever that means), but Sarah was actually a Women's Studies Minor at ASU and her boyfriend during her time on the show was a Women's Studies Major at ASU.
Yay Courtney!
i'm totally into this season of RW too. I noticed at the beginning of the season she said that she was a womens studies major (i'm pretty sure), but so far I haven't exactly heard her preaching the feminist gospel. I mean, on this weeks episode it was the meatheads in the house that had to ask her to step outside of her privilege box in her views about dancers/strippers?
I guess I have been disappointed because I was happy to have a self appointed feminist on the show, especially in hollywood. but then i remember that i am watching the real world on mtv and all my presumptions and standards disappear and i just vegetate for a half an hour.
That is so awesome, Courtney! Finally a reason to take the Real World seriously ;)
Hey Courtney- I'm so glad you posted this! I meant to write to you about a year ago when I first read your article in Bitch mag (a precursor to this book). I wanted to let you know how awesome it was, and that I used it in my work with my eating disorder patients. (i work at an eating disorder inpatient unit at a hospital).
One day, instead of having our usual 'feelings processing' group, my patients- women aged 13 to 60, took turns reading the article out loud. Then we talked about what things stood out to them, what they connected with, etc. Your article gave us something of substance to talk about for an hour, and allowed us to get real with each other and talk about our shared experience as women.
I also think you helped me to create or support some feminist sentiment among them. I'd go so far as to say your article was a spark for recovery for one gal in particular, as she continued to talk to me about it for the next few weeks she remained in the unit and continued to get better.
I think sometimes about the 'click' moment for young women's feminist awakening, and I really try to work toward helping them get there. So, thanks for your article, and this book. And thanks, feministing, for letting me gush!
:)
The blonde girl DEFINITELY needs a dose of feminism. I was about to punch my TV screen when she said, "You know why people become strippers? To pay for their drugs. And that's the truth."
Ignoranceignoranceignorance.
And of course when Sarah talks about being objectified, one of the boys claims that she's putting herself on a "pedestal." Right. Because she wants respect. How dare she think that she's worth ALL THAT!
Wow. I HATE "The Real World." Some of the most sexist crap I see on tv is between the interrelationships between the guys and women on that show. The guys act like complete assholes and its like the women are supposed to tolerate this shit! Its a bad example for women and girls watching it.
Oops! Forgot to add... congrats on the book display!
Thanks for the props all, especially hotpinko. The story of how you used my book is incredibly moving.
And, yeah, The Real World is generally banal and reflects the worst of sexist/racist/classist stereotypes.
I'm sorry, but blonde girl?
That's awesome! It's such a great book - as soon as I finished it I bought copies for all of my friends. I'm glad to see it's getting around. I think it will do a lot of good for any woman who reads it.

Congrats!!
I went to a psychology conference recently and while I was scoping out some books I noticed yours was being sold. I was pretty geeked.
