Hmmm...after looking at the UPI article and the OBOB blog article --

Any chance these two issues could be connected?

so by "cut out entire food groups" they mean...what exactly?

That's what I wondered. I don't eat meat. Is that disordered eating? But reading the full article sure makes it sound like there is a problem since they specify things like the meal skipping is to lose weight and not just lack of time or dislike of breakfast (less healthy but not based on body issues).

it really, really, really, really bothers me when they phrase things like that. i don't like books like skinny bitch selling veganism as a diet and i don't like articles like that calling it an eating disorder either.

You ought to append that the youngest professor in history is going to teach Materials Science and Engineering!

You ought to append that the youngest professor in history is going to teach Materials Science and Engineering! Yay STEM!

Cutting out meat isn't cutting out an entire food group. It's cutting out meat. You can still get protein from nuts, beans, etc.

Also, I think that skipping meals (consistantly) for any reason could be considered disordered eating. Not all eating disorders come about because of body issues.

Also, I don't think having an eating disorder is necessarily the same thing as disordered eating. Like, I tend to eat like crap. I certainly don't have body issues, and I don't think I have an eating disorder -- but I do not eat properly, that's for sure, so I'd consider that disordered eating.

Note that I'm only commenting on the comments here; I haven't yet had a chance to read the article (I'm at work but will when I get home).

I had an EDNOS (eating disorder non other specified) for 6 years. This site is very helpful and the bulletin board is great!

The disordered eating article is talking about how women, don’t eat, binge/purge, skip meals, cut out food groups, smoke and/or generally unhealthy crap solely to lose weight. It is not about vegans, vegetarianism, or any other particular lifestyle; it is about women’s body issues.

I think by "cutting out whole food groups" they are referring to fad diets like the no-carb diet and such. I'm a vegetarian and I didn't take it that way at all.

Also, I'm kind of guilty of missing meals. Not because I'm trying to lose weight, but because I am a really busy college student.

I hate Chris Matthews!

Thats why I think it a wee distorted when Obama supporters claim that he has to deal with so much rascism. I know his race is brought up, but there is a load of difference with the way the media treats it. Yesterday I saw a television segment that was about voters who say they have nothing against his skin color, but then vote differently. They would never bring this up about women. When Hillary talked about the hills women have to climb, she was accused of playing the 'gender card.' Obama can make speeches everyday about race in this country and how he wouldnt turn his back on his preacher because it would be tantamount to turning his back on the black community, and people applaud. If Hillary said that, theyd accuse her of playing the gender card. Obama is being taken seriously because, well,...hes a man. So I dont see him any different than the white men who run for president and simply get elected because they have a dick. Obamas still cashing in on his gender privilege in this country and is no different from the rest.

Meanwhile, I just saw a neat movie review:

http://www.boston.com/ae/movies/articles/2008/04/24/baby_mama_delivers/

"'Baby Mama' delivers" by Wesley Morris, Globe Staff, April 24, 2008

"I feel bad complaining about the current fertility trend in movies, since if I weren't watching women wrestle with pregnancy, I would barely be able to watch them in comedies at all. The genre has been colonized by men who grant women the ability to deliver a baby but rarely a joke. So on these grounds alone 'Baby Mama' is an unexpected triumph...

"...But in this era of Apatow and Ferrell and Rogen and Wilson, of men monopolizing movie comedy, 'Baby Mama' feels absurdly momentous, and even political. Fey and Poehler aren't just taking back control of their bodies. They're taking back control of their profession."

Yes, you should mention that the professor is one of Materials Science & Engineering. She's a nanotechnologist!!

In other words... TAKE THAT, LARRY SUMMERS! If women have "different brains," how did this woman get to be where she is by the age of 19?
