SNL on the pill.

While there's a humorous critique of the ridiculous "woman-friendly" a.k.a. pink idiocy of birth control commercials, there's got to be something said about the wee perpetuation here of the stereotype that women are or can be hormonally out of control. (The pink ax says it all.)

(But I will admit the general hilarity of Tina Fey and Amy Poehler caused me to laugh my ass off when I saw this.)

Thanks to Daniela for the link.

I took this to be a criticism against the supposed plethora of female birth control that does not offer a non-hormonal option. The commercial that it parodies makes the viewer think there are options by showing a woman shopping, but the options are at the mall, not at the drugstore. I think this is kind of brilliant.

I think the ladies take control of the crazy-lady stereotype and turn it around-- it's not because we're hormonal, it's because our only option is a pill that makes us FUCKING CRAZY. Is that an option? Kudos, SNL Ladies.

I'm getting an error message when I try to run the video.

"The requested video cannot be displayed in your reion."

what did Europe do now?

Good point.

Also, hormones CAN and DO make many people pretty fucking insane, and not just women either. Ever heard of 'roid rage?

Martine,

Sorry about that, not sure why you're having a problem. Here's the original link.

I think Tina Fey has more than proved her feminist street cred, and I think the ability to poke fun at ourselves is vital survival tool.

Plus, what pinkpicnc said.

And yes, good point pinkpicnic!

Thans Vanessa, but I guess SNL just doesn't want me to see it...

I tried to look for it on youtube, didn't find it, but I stumbled across this little video.

Why can't birth control be like that?

Martine, that video is hilarious!

I can't even take birth control that makes my periods slightly shorter, so having them once a year would turn me into a crazy pink ax wielding madwoman.

I took this as more of a "Well, that's what you get for trying to make normal bodily functions more convenient" type of statement instead of a "Haha, ladies are so crazy."

Yeah I definitely thought this was funny... When women can relate to other women by laughing at our shared frustrations, I say right on. Now if this were a bunch of guys in drag I'd say F-- Off because they don't know what they're talking about.

And I know this is wrong in countless ways, but if I ruled the world I would impose an extra tax on men that would pay for women's sanitary items (preferably the cup). Oh, it's not your fault your a man so why should you have to pay? Well because it's not my fault I'm a woman, and why should I have to bleed my whole damn life? Women shouldn't have to carry the physical AND financial expenses of keeping the human race going... It's the least we can do to even things out a little. :P

Just because it's not feminist, doesn't mean it's not funny. Kinda like watching videos of people getting hit in uncomfortable places - not right, but very funny. As long as we can separate the two in our mind.

I thought the same way pinkpicnic did when I saw it.

I agree that the "chock you full of hormones" jab makes this a critique - but that might just be the emotional scarring from my one and only time trying to limit my periods talking.

I agree this skit is making light of the ridiculousness of both the bc commercials out there & what those ads are trying to convince us is okay to do to our bodies. I laughed my a** off, just like I did with T.Fey's skit about "Woomba, the little pink robot that cleans your noonie!" years ago (I even call the V that now) Anyways, I have recently begun reading this blog, and this is the reason I keep coming back: Yes we DEFINITELY need to dialogue daily and educate about injustices, but when we lose the ability to laugh all hope seems lost.

The one time I tried to take (the lowest dose available) pill, I turned into the psycho bitch from the lower depths of hell. Even I couldn't stand to be in the same room with me.

The day after burger vid is now in my bookmarks. Right along with Man Cold.

I don't find this ad offensive or anti-feminist at all. Part of it is about the fact that BC technology isn't good enough yet, and it's about the weirdness of side effect notices in comercials and part of it is just laughing at the fuzzy pink soft focus ad style "for women."

What I have noticed about BC ads lately is that FINALLY there are ads that do not mention that the women taking the BC will have kids someday. Up until about 2-3 years ago, every BC ad I ever saw included the mention of A) the husband B) the kids that she promises to have in the future. Now, the ads just seem to talk about the woman's experience of taking the meds, as it should be. BC isn't just for married women and it isn't just for women who simply want to adjust the timing of their inevitable childbearing. It's for all of us, and now the ads are starting to catch up.

I laughed pretty hard at this skit and took it as a swipe at trying to fix something that isn't broken.

I have to admit though, that I was really put off by the Cougars skit I saw the other week. It just seemed like an excuse to get all the women in a skit to make fun of older women's sexuality. Badness all around.

The disclaimers were vaguely reminiscent of Happy Fun Ball, which made me giggle back in the day.

any and all hormonal bc makes me act like the women in that ad. For a very long time, everyone thought I was completely insane.

But this is hilarious! I definitely see it as a dig on pharmaceutical companies more than anything else. It sounded to me like it's that pill that's messed up. Like the Ambien of birth control.

And that burger video reminds me of this:

Tina Fey can do no wrong in my book. I love her.

This recent SNL bit was so good it made me tear up.

I don't think they're reinforcing stereotypes of women as hormonal as much as I think they're saying that when you put off the period for one year, you get 12times the strength of PMS, like it's "saving up".

That's my take.
Tina Fey is funny. But her new movie babymama looks kinda dumb.

I too have had and heard of hellish experiences from some of those newer BC pills. Those newer pills don't always do what they say they'll do with your periods. I thought the skit was funny!

Hold on to your f***ing hat!
I lol'd.

Oof, if only this weren't EXACTLY how my mom thinks!
I stack my rings so I only get periods quarterly. I'm also dealing with some (unrelated) depression/anxiety issues.

My mom likes to say that I'm depressed/anxious because I don't have periods anymore. Apparently if I'm completely incapacitated with cramping, nausea, etc for 5 days, losing huge amounts of iron (I'm a vegetarian) it lets all my "crazy" out and I'll return to normal.

And she wonders why I moved out...

Also out of my region, so I can't see what you're talking about. (I really hate those country lockouts ...)

But I just gotta say that I take bc every single day (I mean EVERY day, no breaks, no placebos) and it doesn't do anything to me except allow me to live normally. Otherwise I'd be taking 2-3 sick days per month. No moodiness. No hormonal ups and downs. Just constant normalcy. (Before the bc, usually a day before my period I just wanted to literally die. So it's nice to not feel that way anymore.)

Just saying. Some people look at periods and go, "Oh, they're just normal bodily functions! It's no big deal! It's just a little uncomfortable!" and they don't really understand what it's like to have your body really trying to destroy you with such a "normal" function. For 7 days. Every month.

But the low dose stuff is shit, IMO. I'm not sure who it works for. I took it when I weighed hardly anything, but it just made me bleed (not spot--BLEED) for a month. The normal dose works fine.

I love it when the woman goes into upward-facing dog and then asks about the pill. As a person who is technically a yoga teacher but doesn't teach yoga, I found that hilarious.

BeezNeez,

That low-dose shit works for people like me who react very badly to regular pills. The regular dose sends me into a deep depression. I used to take the lowest dose possible, and it relieved all my cramps and had negligible side effects. I love it!

I think it's not the most positive feminist commentary. However, as a woman who can get pretty crazy pms, I found it really funny.

The odd thing is that I'm less crazy on the Pill than off.

The odd thing is that I'm less crazy on the Pill than off.

Me too!

Well, if crazy is a scale from 1 to 10, off the pill, I'm a 1 most of the month and a 10 on my period.

On the pill, I'm a 2 most of the month and a 3 on my period.

Yay for BC.

This video was fuckin' funny...I don't think it was antifeminist at all...if anything, it was giving more power to women by allowing us to poke fun at ourselves and the shit our bodies have to go through every month.
