Video of the Day: Thank God I am a Man

This is a pretty funny parody. And if it is not, I am still laughing at it.

I could just see this remixed into some great diva house music.

I thought this was really funny until the "faggots are maggots" part. I don't know. I was kind of chuckling and smiling until that came out. It was just kind of unnecessary and left a bad taste in my mouth.

The "occasions for tax evasions" made me laugh out loud, though!

This is from Shock Treatment, the shitty little-known sequel to the Rocky Horror Picture Show.

I thought it was a good way of showing patriarchys bullshit and how incompetent it is in a sort of musical parody. I thought the 'faggots are maggots' part displayed the harmful superficiality and insecurity of partriarchy by expressing bluntly the hate that fuels this corrupt social system.

Thanks, Daniel Burk. Yes, this is from Shock Treatment, and that's actually very important. The entire thing is tongue-in-cheek -- it's written by the same guy that wrote "I'm just a sweet transvestite from transsexual Transylvania," so let's keep it in context.

MyBabyPanda, it's a send-up of that attitude, not serious.

Gopher and literarycritic - Yeah, I get that it's not serious haha. I mean, but the whole thing was just kind of light hearted and fun until the slur. I don't know, I just HATE that word and it turns my stomach, as if it were a parody of white people that ended with the word "nigger". Just kind of spoiled it for me, even though it's supposed to be funny. I dunno, maybe I'm too sensitive!

Oh Shock Treatment. Such a terrible movie with a few catchy songs.

@ MyBabyPanda:

I know exactly what you mean. I hate that word too. It's one of those words that, regardless of context, sounds unbelievably nasty coming out of anyone's mouth.

However, I really do think that the shock of hearing the word "faggot" can be used in subversive ways to drive home a point. I actually don't think this video does it as well as some others I've seen, for example in this video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QJqSYKBZOTk

(After the intro, natch.)

Something about the use of the word "faggot" in that sketch makes the comedy aspect come through loud and clear.

I agree that in the video from Shock Treatment it seems to come out of nowhere, and the delivery is dead-serious, not deadpan the way it is in the KITH sketch. So, in my opinion, the KITH sketch is an example of how the word can be used for subversive entertainment value when handled correctly, but when handled ham-fistedly can result in an uncomfortable moment in an otherwise subversive comedy piece.

Hmm what did you think of Blazing Saddles then?

Specifically this scene:

It seems to me that parody, done well, can be used well to skewer the users not the target of such offensive phrases.

Exactly!

Great choice of clip, too. *LOL*

Yep, that's Shock Treatment alright. I actually listen to the music from this more than The Rocky Horror Picture Show. It's catchier although, indeed, a bad movie.

Am I the only one who liked Shock Treatment? Anyone? Sure it doesn't really make any sense and the new Janet is irritating, but I actually think it's a pretty enjoyable movie. And music is indeed better suited for casual listening.

I LOVE Shock Treatment, the movie and the soundtrack. I sing along to the soundtrack all the time!

Dear Lord, please tell me more people have seen Rocky Horror and Shock Treatment than are showing in this thread. If you haven't, GO WATCH. NOW.

And a PS, there's a callback (see parentheticals) during "I'm Going Home" in Rocky Horror. As Frank is singing: "Coz I've seen (Shock Treatment!) OH!! (It wasn't THAT bad) blue skies!"

Watch it, love it.
