don't know when i'll be in houston, but i'll be in austin this summer for netroots nation conference!

Be sure to tease up your hair to unimaginable heights (the late Molly Ivins may have some advice in that vein; just search for her article about Dallas) in order to properly fit in. The talk should go fine so long as the "No Frat-Daddies*" sign is adhered to.

* trust me, this is very applicable at SMU... and most other universities.

I'm the president of the feminist organization on SMU's campus (the Women's Interest Network) and I'm thrilled about today. I'm also the dork who screamed "Jessica Valenti!" when asked by a student advisor if I could see anyone speak about women's issues on campus, who would I choose? Less than a week later, I was told that you were coming. Texas isn't that bad and anyways, you are sorely needed in places that are less than progressive 24/7. And I also want to hop on the drinks afterwards train. Can't wait!

It was so nice to finally meet you in person, Jess. And it was a blast to get to hear you speak, as well as read from your book. Hope your time in Dallas turned out to be a pleasant surprise (lol) and that you have a safe trip home!

I'm a grad student in anthropology at SMU, and the dogmatic conservativism at this institution (esp with undergrads) can be disheartening. I was so glad to see some really bright young women come out to see the talk, too.

(P.S. I brought someone to the talk who I'm trying to get to understand feminism. I really think you helped the cause! He was really happy that you were funny, and was surprised that you didn't say anything mean about men, lol.)

oh, and important to know: there is much, much cooler stuff in Texas than what I'm guessing you saw of it ;)
