When we're not busy acting stupid, women think and write about stuff. Amazing.
American University (go Eagles?) did a small survey about the issues that matter to young voters (18-29) in elections this year. The issues that ranked the highest were the economy, the war, health care, and the environment. The first half of the article focuses on abortion, which from their list comes in a distant 5th in importance, but is sexier to talk about in relation to young people than the economy, I guess. Not surprisingly, the list of priorities is not that different from numbers you'd see from voters of any age.
So, one day before kind of, but not as super Tuesday, what are the top issues for you all in this election? Does your list match the survey?

Since I am in college, and plan to work for a college when I get my masters education is a big topic for me as well as health care and community centers in cities and towns for the children.
I'm an AU alum. Go Eagles! (Actually, I'm pretty sure it's "Once an Eagle, always an Eagle!" but I'm not sure as I didn't attend any AU sporting events.)
My top issues for the election usually fall under the "social issues" category - gay marriage and abortion. I suppose I should be moving outside of the "hot button" topics, but I can't help myself. They really are my top political concerns.
I think I match the list pretty well. I guess I'm more worried about reproductive rights than the economy, but I think that those can be included in my concerns about healthcare. I'm really hoping that as a society we are moving away from the notion that we don't have to be responsible for one another. I think that would go a long way toward ending the war, preventing future unfounded wars, making people more compassionate towards one another and therefore helping them to understand why we need to make sure everyone has access to healthcare and education.
It's also extremely important to me that the government stop providing funding for abstinence only sex education. As far as I'm concerned, anyone voting to fund that ought to be prosecuted for child abuse at best and possibly murder at worst.
dimethirwen,
I completely forgot about "once an eagle, always an eagle." guess it wasn't true in my case.
hmmm..
-healthcare
-economy
-war
-environment
but i keep flipping them around in my head. definitely healthcare FIRST.
1. Environment (always, always #1 with me)
2. Civil liberties (including reproductive rights)
3. Health Care
4. Global Poverty
5. Education
My list is similar to Hugo Schwyzer's, just a different order:
1) Healthcare
2) Education
3) Civil liberties (=rights)
4) Environment
5) Foreign affairs
The war, environment, and healthcare are always issues with me, but this election (even more so than previous ones) I'm really concerned about corporate influence in politics (bad), increasing political participation (good) and reintroducing civility to Washington DC (which I would suck at).
1) Energy Policy
2) Education
3) Foreign Policy (war included)
4) Health Care
5) Civil Liberties
6) National Infrastructure
If we don't figure out a way of finding an abundant energy source that's clean, none of the rest of it will matter.

1) Reproductive justice (too bad this isn't center-stage in this election)
2) Gay rights
3) The war against poverty
4) Education
5) Foreign policies
Anyone attending the National Young Women's Leadership Conference this weekend up AU's way?
AU is an amazing school. I fell in love with it (and a student there) the first time I was on that campus! It has a wonderful GLBTQ Center - and all the students are very politically active. I actually had plans of transfering there. I am still quite smitten with that school and plan on attending the AUWCL after graduation!
My number one concern is restored faith in my country. I want a leader who will model reason and humanity. That said, if I were checking boxes on a survey, my responses would look like this:
1) International policy
2) Healthcare
3) Family rights (maternity and paternity leave in particular) and childcare considerations (abuse prevention programs, education funding, nutrition programs funding and renewed attention to physical activity programs in schools), and respect that for reproductive rights
4) Environment and energy policy
5) Civil liberties, including but not even remotely limited to the right for two consenting and loving adults to marry regardless of their gender.
6) The economy -- jobs, lending, borrowing, saving. I'm not very well educated in these matters, but it seems we have problems that a savvy leader could and should address.
-Reproductive justice, both in the U.S. and on a global scale.
-Healthcare.
-Rights for immigrants and the least racist immigration policies.
-Education.
-Gay Marriage/GBLTI rights.
I am not sure about the order. I'm pretty much about protecting rights and providing equal opportunities and that as a whole is my first priority.
-War (meaning, get OUT of it)
-Health Care
-Social Issues (gay marriage, choice, etc)
-Environment
moderately off topic, but I am currently an eagle. For once I can say it with pride. :)
In no particular order (I'm very bad at ranking):
-LGBT rights, esp. gay marriage
-environment
-the war (or perhaps I should say warS, as we're still in Aghanistan, etc.)
-education
-poverty reduction/elimination

Alas, another reminder that I have completely aged out of the "young voter" demographic. American University doesn't care what my voting priorities are. Sniff.
Global Poverty, Humanitarian Crisis's, International Affairs and Public Policy, Civil Liberties, Environment, Education,
Economy.
The order there is rather random, education should probably higher on my list.
