Mid-day feminist fun time

A couple of you have asked in comments and emails for some occasional cheer-up posts, to temper all the bad news we've been getting. So here you go...this is my favorite happy-making video. (Yes, I know I've posted it before, but it never gets old to me.)

Sweet! Thanks for tossing this in, Jessica. I agree we need the occasional happy post after the rash of "fuck me running, how many idiots do we have to contend with today " posts. We appreciate it!

What was the name of that show? I so remember watching as a kid--she turned into a rock-star with the help of a computer that was a woman left to her by her father or something and they periodically saved the world/solved crimes--oh, and she was rich.

That was the bomb!

Jem!! I used to love Jem as a kid! And that's one of my favorite songs, I can't believe how well the animation goes with it!

Thanks!!

Yay for Jem! When I was little I had a Jem doll that came with a tape. And gold sparkly fishnet tights.

Jem could totally kick Barbie's ass.

Not that I'm advocating violence in any way.

You know, I never really looked closely at the Holograms before, but now I'm certain:
everything I know about kick ass women, effortless diversity, and oversized accessories, I learned from Jem.

(I was Jem for Halloween when I was 6. Perhaps my best costume to date.)

heh, that was amusing, but that show must be before my time... I've heard of Jem before, but I think it was on Robot Chicken, so...

After watching this, I realized something very important:

in my mind's eye, Le Tigre has always looked like Jem and the Holograms, it just took until now to recognize it.

Frankly, I find this outrageous.

Proserpina, it's not a stupid question. The song is Deceptacon. It's the first song on Le Tigre's self-titled album.

When was Jem on the air? I have some vague memories of watching it on VHS, but that's all.

"Frankly, I find this outrageous."

Truly, truly, truly outrageous.

In all seriousness, I tried to use "jem" as a Scrabble word when I was about six. I was very confused when my mom told me that wasn't how the word was spelled.

"oh GOD i am old."

Hehe, well I'm only 19, I suspect it wasn't THAT much before my time. This was an 80s cartoon, I'm guessing?

I can't believe that there was a day that I made a decision to choose Barbie over Jem.

In my defense, Barbie was a doctor and she had a lot of dirty sex.

...Your lyrics are dumb like a linoleum floor.

Synergy, send me reinforcements!

I love Jem as much as that kid I think.

Jem RULED! I'm pretty sure I owned almost every one of those dolls. And I had to be her for Halloween a couple of years ago. Oh, and you can't be that old. I just turned 25. :)
