Bill Clinton opens a can of whoopass on anti-choicers

This is just so great. At a campaign event in Ohio, Bill Clinton was heckled by anti-choicers. This was his response.

"We disagree with you. You want to criminalize women and their doctors and we disagree. I reduced abortion. Tell the truth! Tell the truth! If you were really pro-life, if you were really pro-life, you would want to put every doctor and every mother, as an accessory to murder, in prison, and you won't say you wanna do that, because you know that you wouldn't have a lick of political support. Now, the issue is, you can't name me anybody presently in politics that did more to introduce policies that reduce the number of real abortions, instead of the hot air putting out to tear people up and make votes by dividing America. This is not your rally."

Saw this at Pandagon as well and it is still awesome to watch again and again. I wish more people would call these people out on their bullshit.

... this makes me (heart) him really a lot.
(not sure what happened to the rest of my comment).

I am absolutely in love with the Clintons.

Hallelujah!

This kind of blunt talk, telling the fundie nutjobs that they're nutjobs and we're not going to take them seriously, is exactly what is needed in the public discourse.

We have danced around politely for too long. These people are nutjobs. It's time to say so.

I'm so fucking horny for the Clintons. Jesus Christ I have such a lady boner for them.

P.S. Why are all these videos always on anti YouTube pages? They are absolutely taking over YouTube.

Wow.

Gosh, it sure is sad that Bill isn't in the race again... He is right, his legislation helped REDUCE the number of abortions performed drastically from the number performed under the current "Pro-Life" admin. Just goes to show that preventative contraception, education, and public assistance works. Now imagine if his policies were enacted with a Congress that worked with him, rather than the Gingrich Republicans who fought tooth and nail against anything he'd suggest.
Too bad Bill isn't running in this election, or I'd vote for a Clinton!

That rocks my world. This is not your rally! I wish more politicians would talk about plans for reducing the need for abortions altogether as opposed to criminalizing them. I wish I wish I wish. I mean, is it that big a leap for these fundies that if your health care system works like it should, very few women would ever even have to get them? Raaahhr. Go Bill baby.

Oh yes!

It is just SO GOOD to see a politician actually make that point. I suddenly have even more respect for the Clintons

Yeah! I was right along there with him!

I do hope Hillary Clinton wins!

WOW. I've never liked Bill Clinton all that much (though I did vote for Hillary in the primary), but this is awesome. I just gained a ton of respect for the guy.

I do have to wonder if he'd have said the same in a different setting. I love what he said, but he's still basically just yelling at like five people and being cheered on by a huge crowd.

At any rate, though, it's great to know that there's real depth to his position on this. Has Hillary said anything similar on the subject?

I met Bill Clinton at a rally a couple of weeks ago and he was pretty amazing, even if he does have his faults.

Thanks for calling attention to this.

there is something SO awesome about a man not having to think twice about speaking out on this issue. of course i know it's slick willy and his lothario ways do not make him the poster boy of feminism, but as a politician, you damn well ought to be ready to speak unapologetically for women's rights, so that's refreshing.

He may have been the man with a microphone and the crowd's backing against five guys with placards, but he must still have known it would get reported and shown all over the place.

I haven't exactly seen eye-to-eye with the man on a number of things, but kudos to him for not attempting to be all things to everyone.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, I would feel honored to blow Bill Clinton. He's so awesome. I second the lady boner. *Swoon* Men using feminist rhetoric makes me hot.

Ugh. The only way he can argue against them is to point out that he's stopped more abortions than they have? THAT is what passes for an inspiring pro-choice speech? That's really sad.

And he stopped those abortions by allowing anti-choice, anti-woman legislation that restricts women's access to abortion, especially poor women and minors. He didn't reduce the need for abortions, he reduced women's access to resources. Oh yeah, and he allowed the global gag rule-- the same one he lifted in '92-- to be written back into law in '99. Brave.

If people are actually excited about this, the women's movement is in serious, serious trouble.

Sarah, I think the excitement stems more from the fact that he's calling the antichoicers on their inconsistency. I don't think anyone here would disagree that restricting women's choices is not a good thing.

Indeed. I'm just relieved to see that he stood up to the crazies, rather than buckling with some kind of evasive talk about "compromise" for fear of alienating the wingnut demographic. These people can't be allowed to sway national discourse any longer.

Clinton has sold her soul. I don’t trust her. She’s marketed herself as everything to everybody, that she’s become nothing to anybody. From that TV show “Commander and Chief produced by Bill Clinton’s adviser and Hillary’s book publisher to that two man attack on Obama after NH, the Clinton’s have spent billions to win the presidency. Hopefully the US presidency isn’t up for sale. I’m sure Hillary and the Clinton mega-machine will continue to do what ever they can to put her in the white house. It’s amazing how many people are fooled by smoke and mirrors in a skirt and high heels.

The Law Fairy, I get where you're coming from, but I hardly think all the swooning over what a superawesome!! feminist Bill Clinton is is warranted. I mean, what he's really saying here is: We all agree that abortion is bad, but your tactics are inconsistent and alienate people, and mine are far more successful in preventing abortion.

And he's right. He's kept more women from accessing reproductive health care than the sign-waving crazies have. And I bet that moderate (i.e. non-sign-waving) anti-choicers are just as happy about this speech as the commenters here. Bill Clinton is a master of pandering to the right and the left at the same time, and this is a perfect example.

Umm... I'm glad to see politicians speaking out against pro-lifers...

but that would make you honored to blow Bill Clinton? *eww* I mean, if what really turns you on is giving oral sex, then rock on with yourself. But if that somehow makes him special, there have got to be so many better guys out there, and we've got to start holding men to higher standards.

Well, more people are just having oral sex instead of intercourse. Bill Clinton definitely played a part in reducing abortions.

THIS 100% made my life.
I have nothing to say other than I love love love the Clintons. I'm in Canada rooting for Hillary all the way, and I die for the way the Bill just put those anti-choicers in their place!! I hope it becomes the norm!

Hey Suzie,

Exactly how strong is the crack you are smoking.....

I ask because of your comment that
"hopefully the U.S. presidency is not up for sale."

I don't know what world you live in but her in the United States the presidency of the United States has been "for sale" for quite some while......

It is impossible to win the presidency without accepting millions of dollars from large corporations and then once you are in the white house what better way to pay corporate donors back then making laws that protect them many times at the expense of the American people.

I guess doing what is right and just don't pay as well not to mention the influence and numbers corporate lobbiests have in the political process.

To single out Hillary Clinton as having sold her soul is so misleading because most politicians have sold there soul and most DO NOT do what is best for the american people.

I think its amazing how people are still fooled by the promises of politicians for real change when the only real and substatial change that can occur is if we tell large corporations who abuse their power by causing human suffering and killing the enviornment to go fuck themselves by enacting strict laws that don't allow them to get away with the murder of our democracy.

yay! I was there!

This rally was held nearby a craaazy Catholic university so there were actually quite a few protesters up front. Only three had signs and there were a few in the back praying, but they had lots of friends with them.

Clinton made jabs at them again and again throughout his speech. This was the second of the major hits they took. It was interesting to see him feel out the crowd before he criticized them too harshly. If you thought THIS was moderate, geez. The first time around, he spent most of his time talking about how every abortion is such a tragedy and blah blah blah. Finally, he said that, no matter what, Hilary would always protect a woman's right to choose and the crowd went NUTS-- screaming, jumping up and down, stomping on the bleachers... and still he couldn't find it in him to say more than, "Well, I stopped more abortions than you did!"

I wasn't super thrilled with what he had to say-- I figure, if my incredibly pro-life roommate is clapping a little, it can't be that great-- but I'm not gonna lie, it was great to see the VAST majority of that crowd go nuts for a pro-choice sentiment. They were PISSED at those pro-lifers and they wanted to be heard. It was neat. :)

All I can say is...

Bill for First Husband.

P.S. SoyMilk, your comment made me laugh so hard I almost choked on tortilla chip.
