Feministing Links of the Day

So because I can't figure out how to set up the "daily blog posting" feature on Feministing's del.icio.us account, I'm just putting these bad boys in by hand. (If anyone has some insider del.icio.us knowledge and can help out, shoot me an email!)

Boys Will Be Boys, Girls Will Be Hounded by the Media - New York Times: "Some celebrities and their handlers are now saying straight out that the news media have a double standard."

Banda sisters - Guardian:"In one of India's poorest regions, hundreds of pink-clad female vigilantes are challenging male violence and corruption."

Tech's feminine side - The Boston Globe:"No one would make the argument that megapixels are masculine or that gigabytes have a gender. But as gadgets and websites become an integral part of everyday life, a high-tech world that has been largely built and engineered by men is getting the feminine touch."

YouTube - Saving My Hymen for Jesus: Satire - Two girls dish about the benefits of saving it for the lord!

The Pro-Choice Public Education Project: PEP has a new website!

BBC NEWS - Africa war zones' 'rape epidemic': "Sexual violence is spreading in African conflict zones like an epidemic, the United Nations has warned."

That NY Times article seems to be indulging in a double-standard of its own! THey allude to Colin Farrell being the subject of "attention" at the end, but fail to mention it was for a sex tape he made. Treating men with kid gloves again? Sigh!

And now from the New York Times: "Giants Stadium is actually in New Jersey".

Next time, tell us something surprising.

I first saw the Saving My Hymen for Jesus skit quite a while ago, and it got pushed to the back of my head. Thanks for reminding me of this hilarious sketch! And a catchy song, too :)

And from the Times's health blog: http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/02/15/inside-the-mind-of-the-boy-dating-your-daughter/

Newsflash: Teenage boys actually are interested in girls for reasons other than sex! And teenage girls are actual individuals with interesting characteristics that don't involve the size of their breasts or the color of their hair!

Of course, no matter what a scientific study shows, people will find a way to interpret it in accordance with stereotypes. It's sad how many of the comments on that article essentially say, "Well, obviously the boys are lying, because as we all know, teenage boys only want sex, and teenage girls are only interesting inasmuch as they provide said sex. Protect your daughters, everyone!"

I just watched "Saving My Hymen for Jesus" three times in a row--hilarious! I grew up in a really conservative area, where this shit was everywhere. I just sent the link to my sister, who's still living in the middle of it and can't wait to get out :).

I will totally have that song stuck in my head all week.
