i'm all choked up already. sheesh, this looks amazing. i wish i were 8. can they have a rock'n'roll girls camp for 28 year olds?
that was seriously beautiful...it gave me chills and i have a huge smile on my face!
i cant wait to see it!
i fully teared up when i saw that...damn, i wish i had gone to rock camp! i'm putting it on my calendar, for sure.
holy crap i just choked up! that is outstanding! i can't wait to see it!
hey, mt, we could start our own!
Wow. It's so great these girls are discovering the empowerment music gives you. I want that summer camp. :)
Can this 25 year old join the 28 year old band, too!
I just marked my outlook calendar for the opening date to this! Yay!

Added to the Netflix Queue. Thanks for the heads up, the movie looks great.
I saw Girls Rock! last year at the Seattle International Film Festival. It was fantastic, everyone should see it.
that's really, really cool, but it looks like it's quite pricey to attend which is a shame because those least able to afford this kind of thing are usually the ones who need it the most. My parents never would have been able to afford this even if it existed when I was 8.
I really want to see this! It looks awesome. It is a bit pricey, Ayla. We should raise money to send some girls to the summer camp.
i can't wait for this! it's playing at my univeristy's film series in april.
Hey, one of the filmmakers here...so nice to hear all these cool things you all are saying! Rock Camp really is an amazing place. Just wanted to say to Ayla that they never turn anyone away for lack of money. A good portion of the girls are fully paid for, and they raise the money to support that.
That looks so awesome! I love Carrie Brownstein. :)
I love Carrie B... And relate to the commenters above who got all choked up from watching that
I wish I could have gone to Rock Camp. :( Now I'm too old.. hah. Maybe one day I'll be a volunteer!
I want to see that movie, and if I think my 4 year old niece can sit through it, I'm taking her along.
“they do have one for ladies over 18!
Can someone explain to this unreconstructed 80s feminist just how and when lady became acceptable again? To my ears, it's a term that signals a patronizing male sexist.
i wanna go to the ladies rock camp!!!
i am 29 and i wish i had this when i was growing up. i want soooo bad to volunteer at willie mae in the summers, but i have NO musical talent (i have been learning the acoustic guitar for 3 years and i still can't switch chords without a great deal of trouble!) But what a powerful experience that would be! Maybe they need some volunteer roadies. :)
p.s. keith- reclaim it! it's such a ridiculous term to me, so i guess i'm using it ironically (that sounds lame). i also call my long-time partner my "ladyfriend" b/c i think it sounds good. she's not a 'girl' in any sense, so girlfriend is out, and she's not my business associate, so partner doesn't fit either. ladyfriend seems like an appropriate term.
:)
I saw this movie at the Milwaukee International Film Festival back in September. I absolutely love it and I recommend it to everyone. I also wrote a review for my blog:
http://popcorninmybra.blogspot.com/2007/09/movie-review-girls-rock.html
At my daughter's music recital in December, when most of the kids were singing Christmas carols, one little girl, about 7 or 8 years old, sat up on the stage with a *gorgeous* red guitar and said, "I'm going to play Smoke on the Water"
I had to cheer. :)
This movie will be so amazing!! i'm hoping for global change based on this movie, all young girls should be confident.
@Keith_Ellis, hello Ladyfest... and also Missy Elliott!
I love "lady", I'm bummed that some people associate it with less kind times.
HEY LAAAADIES!!
1) yes you can go to the ladies camp if you are over 18 :)
2) you don't have to have music experience to volunteer, you can be a camp counselor... they also have many other jobs they need help with that don't require musical skills. plus, remember you only have to teach these kids a week's worth of skills and it is more about their self-esteem gained rather than musical skills gained, so it doesn't matter if you aren't PHENOMENAL.
3) also, if you aren't in the New York area then there are also Girls' Rock Camps in the Portland area, in Chicago, i think maybe Seattle, and a couple other places too. search for it on blackle.com or google.
