Cynthia McKinney's presidential bid

I know we haven't mentioned it yet, but former Rep. Cynthia McKinney running on the Green Party ticket. Check out her announcement speech:

McKinney was recently interviewed on DemocracyNow. And Ampersand has a few thoughts.

McKinney gives black female politicians a bad name, and she is abusive to the media when SHE makes a mistake. Just because she's decided she's third party doesn't mean she's the best (or most stable) choice.

Well, we Greens have four other good options to choose from in our primary.

Awesome. Now everybody can shut the hell up about race vs. gender

I used to think that she was treated so unfairly by the MSM for her alleged "Bush caused (as in planned) 9/11" statements. That may be the case, but so much of what she says is off the wall, I just can't get worked up about it anymore.

But then, why did they go after her for that when they had plenty of legitimate ammunition to use against her?

Keshmeshi, can you specify which of her statements are "off the wall" or "ammunition"? Because apparently I'm crazy to think so, but I admire McKinney for, for example, being the one person in Congress to investigate election fraud in 2000 (all by herself), and for researching issues for herself, rather than following party lines like a sheepy politician. She shows how politics should be done: passionate, interested in everything, and, yes, angry. Why is it only okay to be angry anonymously on a blog? Why, if we all know how f*cked up the world is, is it only ok for us people-who-can't-do-anything-about-it to rant and rave? And, the inevitable question: would she be this marginalized if she were a white man? Why do we expect that politicians are tapping their foot in an airport stall, embezzling funds, paying no attention to their job, accepting money from corporations, etc, but it's considered huge freaking news when a government representative, tired of not being recognized by government security, or of having her aide mistaken for her, pushes the cop in order to get his hands off her? And why is that the only thing, besides the wrong 9-11 quote, that most people know about her?
Anyway, I am proud of Cynthia McKinney and I think that the media has done a great job of either ignoring or spreading misinformation about her. This is why I was excited to hear this news, and why I sent it to Feministing. But I guess I'm the only one.

Someone PLEASE tell me this is a joke!! I have worked in GA democratic politics since 1992 (before I was even old enough to vote), and have quite a bit of experience with Ms.McKinney. She is one of the most dishonorable politicians of either party I have ever encountered. Her campaigns are run on race baiting and gender-baiting. She is tremendously inflamatory, and what is *not* mentioned is that she that she has angered enough people in her own state to no longer want her representing them in congress, having lost the last democratic primary race to Denise Majette, another African American woman (just pointing this out so that we realize neither race nor gender was a reason for her loss). Her father, another GA democratic politician has no more respect in GA than she does. I would NEVER vote of Cynthia McKinney. I have seen her do TOO much damage in my state, and would never give her the opportunity to do that to the country!! I don't comment here often, but this is something I feel quite strongly about!!

I'm glad to see Cynthia running and will be glad to vote for her and campaign for her here in the 4th district in Georgia - her old district. What SaraP says I think is not accurate for different reasons. First of all, progressives and black activists respect Cynthia here and all over the country for being one of the very few people in congress to have the guts to speak out on vote stealing, Iraq, Katrina, the patriot act, so on and so on. She lost two elections thanks to heavy republican cross over voting in Dekalb County (which is documented in the film American Blackout extensively), not by losing respect from her home-base, which respected her more than ever. As far as dishonorable, aside from that whole cop shoving slander story, from which she was cleared from all wrong-doing by a commission appointed to investigate it, she has never been caught in any type of money scandal or anything else. She's the most honest politician out there, in my opinion. And, somebody so involved in Georgia politics should know that Cynthia lost her last race to Hank Johnson, not Denise Majette, who with her heavy republican funds and votes and "America: love it or leave it" scare tactics afer 9/11 won back in 2002.
