Media-created "catfight" of the day

From Time magazine's blog Swampland: "[I]s there room in Washington for both a Speaker Pelosi and a President Hillary?"

Ok, SO ridiculous. And that photo just made my day. "Pelonsi's BFF"?

Oh, man. TOO FUNNY.

this might be a first! the comments on that blog are almost ALL really awesome and see that the "issue" is totally fabricated! i hate people slightly less right now.

It's not like women in Washington is old news. Maybe they should realize that '08 doesn't mean 1908...

Omg mt you're right! People are smacking that woman down!

Lol. That sounded like a completely sexist comment and I didn't mean for it to be. All in the context, right? :D

I am all for calling out sexist bullshite, it makes me cringe.

I was wondering if we could also maybe discuss how the candidates' positions and policies effect women?

For example their stand on Net Neutrality. This issue really effects feminist blogs and internet control.

Is that too wonky of me? I would lurv some feminist perspective on da issues.

Is there too much room in their head for the brain?

I think so.

Lame!

Hmm.. is there enough room for a gazillion cocks?

.. I think not

I think we should have more vaginas in the white house. Takes up less space :P

This is fucking retarded and makes me sick.

Two vaginas > 400 penises

"Is there room in Washington for both a Speaker Pelosi and a President Hillary?"

The question doesn't even make any sense. Pelosi and Clinton don't compete with each other in any way. Pelosi is in the House of Representatives and Clinton is in the Senate & is running for President. They have no overlap. And neither of them has ever demonstrated any interest in invading the other's sphere of power. So what is zee getting at with that question?

It's like asking if there is enough room in this world for both Margaret Thatcher and Golda Meir? The question itself makes no sense.

Two thumbs down to this "question"!!

ZOMG two women in power in a city festering with thousands of men in power! Oh noes how will they get anything done when they are so busy having pillow fights?

Why is Clinton usually refered to as Hillary while we use 'Edwards,' 'Bush,' and 'Obama' for the others?

If it were purely b/c of Bill, then we would refer to our current President by his full name to distinguish him from his father.

"FESTERING with thousands of men"

ouch. not very nice words!

That was an idiotic statement in that blog. Perhaps if they had used specific policy stances Clinton and Pelosi have and how that might cause problems with President-Speaker interactions it could have made sense but they didn't seem to be doing that.

Also, Haydin, I think people are so used to using Hillary as opposed to Clinton in small part because of her husband but also because people became so familiar with her during her time in the white house.

Interesting thought though, they distinguish between the Bushes by saying 41 or 43 or using their middle initials. How should they distinguish between the clintons? Former President Clinton and Presidential Hopeful Clinton? FP Clinton and Senator Clinton? Mr. Clinton and Mrs. Clinton? What do you think would be best if one needed to distinguish between the two in the crappy 30-second sound bytes we get?

Does this person even remember that dicks take up space but vaginas don't? Vaginas by definition are holes - they are a lack of space. So somehow there's magically enough room for every dick in D.C., but two vaginas act as black holes to each other? What is this person smoking? I want some.

Correction - "they are space, not a lack of space."

Like many others, I didn't know we had a hopeful surnamed "Hilary". Any and all jokes about this that could be made probably have been, so... moving on.

Ways for the press to possibly differentiate between Bill and Hilary Clinton, should Senator Clinton win the election this fall:
1) Refer to Bill Clinton as "Bill" or "Mr. Clinton" unless talking directly to him.
2) Refer to him as "Mr. President" and HRC as "Madam President".
3) Refer to Bill as the "First Gentleman".
4) Here, I'd suggest referring to Senator Clinton (as president-elect or President) as "Rodham Clinton" or even just "Rodham", but considering the name she's running as, and the fact that the surnaming process of children is traditionally usually patriliniar, this one is probably the least likely.

This is just another version of the "vagina voter" thing that Melissa over at Shakesville has pointed out.

If a woman supports Clinton, it must be because she's a woman. And if a woman supports anyone other than Clinton it must be because she's a woman.

I hear that if both the speaker of the house and the president are women, abortions will be mandatory.

That quote made my head hurt. A lot.

Don't we refer to Hillary as Hillary because that's the way all her websites, campaign info refer to her?

I don't think we can fault anyone for following the campaign's own marketing can we?

Maybe so, G Davis, but my point was that the Swampland quote framed the question as "Speaker Pelosi and President Hilary" It's referring to one subject by her first name, and the other by her surname, which is grammatically confusing, if nothing else..

In my town, our current mayor ran (and won) mostly on her first name. Let's call her "Jane Smith" for the purpose of anonymity. Maybe it's just a regional bias, but though plenty of us who have never met her call her "Jane" or "Jane, our mayor", I've never heard her called "Mayor Jane". It's always "Mayor Smith".

Nothing like a sexist comment to a post labeled "sexism"...you definitely seem to get the point.

Pelosi's problem with Clinton is that she is a polarizing figure that will energize the republican base and make it impossible for Pelosi to create an actual working majority in the house so they can turn progressive legislation into law. So would you rather have Clinton on the ticket and keep congress a mess, or have Obama on the ticket, who will bring a realigned majority to the Democratic ticket, electing more women to the house and senate.

Re: "Hillary" vs. "Clinton"-- I dunno about you guys, but I remember people calling Bush "W" or "Dubya" all the time, until he was elected. If Clinton gets the presidency, there will be a change to her husband's name in the press and she will be Clinton, just like how when Dubya became Bush and the previous Bush became Bush Sr.

Oh, give me a break!

What the hell has Pelosi done since becoming Speaker but kowtow to Bush and give him everything he wants?

Don't try to put that on Senator Clinton.
