Quick Hit: Women's world cup qualifiers moved to South Africa.

Because of security concerns in Pakistan.

The rescheduling of the Pakistan general election has forced organisers of the women's World Cup qualifying tournament to move next month's event to South Africa, the International Cricket Council said on Tuesday.

"But with the rescheduling of that vote for February 18 (after the assassination of opposition leader Benazir Bhutto), the decision was made to move the event to South Africa," an ICC statement said.

The event will now be held in the Stellenbosch district of the Western Cape.

It's definitely not unforeseen - the Netball World Cup was moved from Fiji to New Zealand last year because of the latest Fijian coup. And I realise that this is mainly being done for security reasons, but it will have a great effect on the Pakistan economy.

With the furor going on over comments made during the second test of the current Indian tour in Australia, I've been learning a lot more about how important cricket is in India, and the countries of the region. Even considering these would be women's games in a predominately Muslim country, the economic loss to Pakistan will be substantial.

I'm reminded of the controversial 1981 Springbok tour of New Zealand which shows that sport is an effective avenue for protest about a country's political stances. The countries which cut sporting ties with South Africa in the 80s, and the protestors during the '81 tour, all showed in their own way that the policies in place at the time were not acceptable to the rest of the world.

Exclusion or protest, it's a hard decision, but I feel either method is effective.
