"Kiddie-porn appeal"?

From a ludicrous HuffPo feature, "The 7 Sexiest Green Celebs":

Emerging from the cesspool of Disney celebs comes Hayden Panettiere. Though best known for her kiddie-porn appeal and role on NBC's Heroes, Panettiere is raising praise and eyebrows as a young advocate.

WTF?

That is truly horrific.

I hope she's offended. I really hope she says something about it.

...but she probably won't.

I really can't say exactly what it means but after the Olsen Twins did their "turn 18 and now it's legal to fantasize about 'em!" all those years ago, she's the new hot young barely legal young thing out here. I hope she says something about it, or someone else calls out HuffPo.

They did the same thing with Hillary Duff, UltraMagnus. And I think the "kiddie porn" (WTF?) appeal is aided by the fact that she may-or-may-not be dating one of her older co-stars (who's, I think, 30).

So, if you're young and attractive that automatically equals kiddie porn? How about just being fodder for a younger demographic of men/lesbians?

What witty comments on the blog in general. While pointing out or praising people's green achievements is worthwhile, regardless of how famous they are, who cares how "sexy" they are?

One thing about owners of SUVs not being green: I have three cars and a motorcycle, including an old Ford Explorer* that gets according to the computer, an average 12 mpg. Pretty horrific, until one understood that I live less than two miles from the city and my wife and I drive a *combined* total of about 5,000 miles a year, on ALL four vehicles. It took me over two years to put just 4,000 miles on my Toyota (14 mpg city). It's taken both me and my wife two and a half years to put 8,000 miles on the Taurus (16 mpg city) I've only used the motorcycle (a 79 Honda) for about 400 miles in six months (48 mpg). I use less gas and produce fewer emissions than people who drive *each* of their vehicles the "average" 12-15,000 per year. I would LOVE to compare carbon footprints with any green elitist who commutes or travels, or owns a larger house than mine (We use from one to three 20w compact florescent bulbs at a time), and my house does not require any cooling or heating.

* Why do I have an SUV? Because I need it to carry stuff and pull a trailer, and it ($5,500) was cheaper than buying a new hybrid truck or SUV that cost $35-40,000. I have never bought a new car or motorcycle. I am keeping four old vehicles out of the groundwater polluting junkyards, saving myself about $15-30,000 per car, and preventing the incredible waste that would go into producing expensive new "efficient" vehicles being promoted, to replace all the dirty vehicles Americans have now.

Hi. My name is Olivia Zaleski. I wrote the "The 7 Sexiest Green Celebs"post on Huffington Post. In this post, I said "Hayden Panettiere is best known for her kiddie-porn appeal."

I would like to apologize and explain my original intentions for this post. I'm not trying to weasel out of anything, but I feel obligated to respond--your comments spoke to me, made me think twice and for that I am thankful.

The post was meant to be ridiculous--"ludicrous" as you say. The concept of "green celebs" is absurd to begin with . . . green is about simplicity, less, the antithesis of excess.

Overall,my intention was simply to draw attention (in a lighthearted and comical way) to a few neat, interesting and environmentally-focused initiatives. In trying to make the post mainstream, I see that I dumbed it down and used shallow commentary.

Hayden Panettiere is an accomplished and inspiring young woman. My description of her, "best known for," was clearly a degradation of her hard work and commitments. I plan to be more cognizant of a mistake like this in future writing.

Thank you for taking the time to respond to my post. I hope you will continue to be as critical and insightful as you prove to be.

Keep up the good work,

Olivia Zaleski

Interesting. (I mean the apology above.) Not related to this article, just a general observation that I find a *lot* of ludicrous articles at HuffPo. Wish they could ditch the entertainment angle.

My first reaction to the kiddie porn comment was that the writer was referencing her photo shoot for some men's magazine. In it she appeared in lingerie (designed to look childish) sucking a lollipop and other such childlike poses. I thought their comment was a tongue in cheek reference to that.

Wow. Good for Olivia Zaleski. It can be really hard to reflect on a mistake like that and not just go into defensive overdrive.

There is often, in the media, a creepy focus on the teens du jour (girls only, of course) that could do with a little serious pointing out. By contrast, lots of people may find Zach whatever-his-name-is (from that Disney High School thing) to be a cute boy, but the panting perviness from adults is largely missing. Grown women tend to leave the teens to the teens with only a few exceptions.

Maybe the next HuffPo blog could point out media outlets that get mileage out of exploiting teen girl sexuality to adult audiences. I'd like to see some light thrown in those quarters.

Wow. I have to say, I'm impressed by Ms. Zaleski as well. The bloggers here do a lot of feminist cultural commentary, and in my year and a half of hanging out on this site, this is the very first time I have seen someone whose work was criticized come here, own up to what he or she wrote, and apologize without any defensiveness or reservation or whining. That's very cool of her and I admire it. It's hard to take criticism of your writing...especially when you have to admit that the criticism is correct.

Its quite clear they are talking about flowers. Unless you've a dirty mind :).

Unfortunately the "kiddie-porn" descriptor is an accurate term for her GQ photo shoot.

http://popsugar.com/827528

http://men.style.com/gq/features/landing?id=content_6202

It is "patting ourselves on the back" near-kiddle porn of Hayden with a hoola-hoop and pig tails, Hayden in a baby doll nightie in a bobby soxer bedroom with her teddy bear...

It is disgusting, but the point is...maybe its not as misplaced as feministing thought (unfortunately).

How can a country that simultaneously freaks the fuck out over sex offenders (and lumps sexual predators in with guys who get drunk and piss in public or 19 year olds with 16 year old girlfriends) indulge this shit?

Oh right...the MONEY.

I read the "kiddie porn" comment as a reference to the GQ type of thing too. Meanwhile Britney (in Rolling Stone at what, 16, 17?) in similar poses is having a public melt down. But hey! Think of the $$$$$$$!

Nitpick: some people commute by bicycle or foot. I dunno how many of them are elitist about it, though.

"There is often, in the media, a creepy focus on the teens du jour (girls only, of course) that could do with a little serious pointing out. By contrast, lots of people may find Zach whatever-his-name-is (from that Disney High School thing) to be a cute boy, but the panting perviness from adults is largely missing. In fact, back when tons of teen girls got crushes on Leonardo DiCaprio, I saw more adult whining (guys saying DiCaprio should be less popular and men their own age should be more popular) than adult panting.

"Maybe the next HuffPo blog could point out media outlets that get mileage out of exploiting teen girl sexuality to adult audiences. I'd like to see some light thrown in those quarters."

I'd like to see that too.

"Wow. I have to say, I'm impressed by Ms. Zaleski as well. Yeah, I'm impressed too. She took it as constructive criticism and learned from it instead of complaining. That's some dedication to actually writing well. :)

"Meanwhile Britney (in Rolling Stone at what, 16, 17?) in similar poses is having a public melt down. But hey! Think of the $$$$$$$!"

Yeah, there's the stage parent angle of this too. It's not wholly unlike the way some other parents out there accept bride prices for their teen and preteen daughters...

"Nitpick: some people commute by bicycle or foot. I dunno how many of them are elitist about it, though."

Maybe because people who are really making efforts to help the environment (I am not, I just don't have far to drive), can do it without being asses about it. My point is, don't judge someone (like Panettiere in that blog, and in another interview) just because they happen to own an SUV.

Have you seen the "Environmental Hysteria" episode of Penn & Teller's "Bullshit"? Their shows don't pretend to be fair and balanced, but they are entertaining nonetheless. I cannot believe that the young people presented can actually be that ignorant.

The link is part one of three. Other parts may be found in the "Related Videos" window.

One interesting point raised by that show, however, which for some reason I have missed all these years, even while reading about EU protest and governmental restrictions on import and sale of genetically modified food and many other issues such as international anti-WTO protests; is how much activism is actual concern for the environment, and how much is simple pro-socialism, anti-capitalism, anti-corporation, anti-globalism? Even a founder and former president of Greenpeace had to get out when he saw a shift in priorities, and questions the message today. However, I must disagree with his implication that a monospecies tree farm is equivalent to old growth forest. It is not. Biodiversity is necessary.

And Mina, you and I know that even those men's magazine photos of Panettiere are not sexualization of children or exploiting young girls to adult male audiences, Hmm? No, this is:

Warning. Highly disturbing. NSFW

This is what I get for clicking on links in places like that. I'm going to brush my teeth and go to bed now, after I take my Lamictal (mood stabilizer).

Don't click on this link unless you really want to be offended. As someone with a daughter and who has studied pediatric nursing and child development, I estimate the ages to be from 3-10.

I don't know how the discussion got thwarted from "kiddie-porn" to environmentalism, but I think A male should get his facts straight and not rely on a single episode of a tv show- from 2003, mind you - for his information on global warming. First of all, "there is no debate" is pretty much correct, as scientists across the globe agree that global warming is a reality and those that don't are often a) not scientists, but weathermen and the like, or b) receiving money from companies such as Exxon - mobil. The way your commentary of the episode basically just restates much of what they say is an indication of your lack of analysis. I recommend the book "Field notes from a catastrophe" by Elizabeth Kolbert, or, if you have a bit more time, taking a college course on global warming. And please limit your criticism to subjects you actually know something about - you might give someone the wrong idea.

I forgot to mention that the scientists who don't agree are a VERY VERY small minority. Look it up, A male.

Considering some recent "scandals," I'd love to see someone actually addressing the huge disconnect it takes to simultaneously drool over 18 year old actresses for their sexiness and express horror that 16 year old girls are having sex and getting pregnant. (I mean our fucked up society as a whole, not the author of the article). Especially when the message is out there everywhere that older men are/should be attracted to teenage girls and that's just nature. And then when teenage girls actually express their sexuality and get caught people are just SHOCKED. OMG THE CHILDREN!

But I'll stop now since I'm getting off topic.

A Male, I'm not a regular here and I mostly lurk, but I'm really disturbed that you link to sites that I'm guessing are disturbing porn sites. If you think it's illegal, report it. We all know what's out there and how to research it if we don't.

At the risk of pissing off a bunch of people on this post, or perhaps boring you, I have to confess that Hayden Panettiere represents an age threshold for me. I'm a 37 y/o male and she's the first female celebrity that I have no attraction to on account of her age.

I used to feel guilty about having a crush on Claire Danes, who was 10 years younger than me when she was in My So Called Life. Was it wrong to be more attracted to Alexis Bledel of Gilmore Girls, rather than Lauren Graham, who's closer to my age, and portrays her mother? What about 22 y/o Mischa Barton? Am I just a dirty old man?

A 15 year difference seems within the bounds of sexual attraction. But at a 20 year difference, I just see Hayden as a kid. I'm not sure all men feel the same though.

A male should be banned from this site for posting those links.

" The way your commentary of the episode basically just restates much of what they say is an indication of your lack of analysis."

Which part would that be?

I am aware of the warming trends of the earth. I can look into claims regarding the ups and downs of the past hundreds of thousands or even millions of years, in fact. I can also read about solar activity. And if you think a consensus about humans being the biggest reason for it means anything, you should look into how skeptical scientists fear speaking out.

And regardless of the reality of global warming (which is to say, I agree it is a real phenomenon with very real consequences), please note the ineffectiveness of the Kyoto Protocol due to the loopholes in it, and the explicit reservations due to economic effects even among signatory nations. The concept and practice of carbon credits or emissions trading is particularly questionable.

I am not trying to mislead anyone. Obviously, me driving only a few hundred miles a year with my SUV (and a couple thousand miles in my other vehicles), does not mean other drivers are innocent. But don't judge me or Panettiere, just because we happen to own SUVs.

Please live your lives as you wish. Helping the environment is great. Concern for nature and fellow human beings, including future generations is really great. Just don't expect everyone to have the same priorities. For example, this is a website in support of feminism. And my priorities are more immediate, and quite frankly, more important. Many Americans would agree. Like quite literally how to keep my family fed, and keep my entire family (I am living off my 18% per annum VISA card), including my 69 year old mother the homeowner, who lives on a fixed income, yet is paying off a 30 year loan, from all losing our homes or becoming homeless. This part of the P&T show I will agree with: those people who can dictate to the rest of the world how to live their lives, or to expect everyone to take up the environmental cause, are probably elitist.

"And please limit your criticism to subjects you actually know something about - you might give someone the wrong idea."

And how would this make me different from any other poster, who quite frankly, may be talking out their ass about health related issues? Please note the current threads on "fat" or veganism. Should I expect or tell everyone to get a nursing license like myself, or better yet, to go to med school like at least two posters I see here, before opening their mouths? Or to become lawyers, like another before talking about legal issues? No. Adults can evaluate for themselves and make their own choices. Because again, isn't that what feminism is about? I support choice.

A male should be banned from this site for posting those links.

Not necessarily, they served a purpose. They were disgusting, but some people don't realize how bad it is out there, and maybe a slap upside the head with a clue-by-four might be needed. Speaking as the father of a teenage girl, it's those girls' parents who need to be horsewhipped. What the hell are they thinking?

I am sorry for those links. I know how offensive those images are. But they are readily found through an online search of "young," as one article noted about "Latina." As I have noted, In Japan and the US find this trend disturbing, and I have found the efforts of individuals to be ineffective. Even when taken down, more come up.

And in the very beginning when I noted people's objections to my posts (thank you Gopher, really, for pointing out how ignorant I can be), I e-mailed the editorial staff to apologize for my comments, particularly toward Gopher, and gave them permission to allow anyone to contact me with their concerns, but most importantly, I am well aware of the fact I could be banned at any time. I am surprised to still be here, and consider it a privilege. I thank you. I said that I would accept whatever decision the editorial staff made regarding my being here.

In any case, I will continue to read this site.

No, JoeMax, as a matter of fact it was not an effort on my part to derail this thread, or to anger people as much as I have. I did not want to hit people upside the head with a 2x4. This is a continuation of my pretty much personal exchange with Mina (hello) about what disturbed me about media in the US and Japan. I just made note of what exploiting the young or sexualizing girls really was. I have a daughter like you. And at seven, she is actually older than some of those exploited girls. I cannot imagine.

Again I am sorry, and await contact from, or decision on whether or not to remove me, by the site administrators.

I thank people for being interested in what I have had to say thus far.

Even if I am allowed to remain, is it possible to just remove my posts? This thread does not deserve to come down. I appreciate Zaleski coming here.

Actually, that preteen legal photos was disgusting, but I'm glad I know about it now. Does anyone know how we can go about shutting them down?

I am really, really sorry for the trouble I've caused. My only excuse is, I did explicitly warn you.

I accept that I cannot trust myself to consistently keep discussions productive, or to exercise better judgment. And I lack the self control to keep silent on such thought provoking discussions as I find here. If administrators share those concerns I agree I should be banned.

Thank you for having me.

I didnt feel explicitly warned. You didnt make it explicitly clear it was ACTUAL young girls. I was expecting 'barely legal' girls in cutesy outfits. I really wanst expecting that.. I didnt think anyone would post such a thing here!

Like there's a HUGE difference between disturbing and NSFW and possibly ILLEGAL.

I can see it was a mistake but I didnt feel warned...

Furthermore, (and this is to JoeMax) I think it's fairly safe to bet that women who identify as feminists and come to blogs like this DO realize how *bad it is out there* where the sexualization of women and children is concerned. We don't need to be protected from it, but neither do we need graphic reminders via links to actual child porn sites embedded in otherwise benign-looking posts in what are supposed to be safe spaces. I may well be banned myself, because this is maybe the third time in a week that I am commenting on the appalling lack of moderation in these forums (whatever interpretation of that suits you...direct engagement with commenters, deleting offensive / aggressive comments, whatever). Funny, I was just re-reading a blog post in which Samhita showed up to say something like, *we didn't have a comment policy then, but we're different now* in reference to the Nubian situation. What is that comment policy, then, and when exactly does it apply?

I'd say links to child porn qualify as offensive and over the line, no matter how they are *intended*. Yes, policing comments is time-consuming, but if maintaining a respectful and safe community is a priority for you, it's bloody necessary.

In response to the poster who asked, I have been looking for ways to help online. At the bottom of this post is a link to the Association of Sites Advocating Child Protection. They make it very simple to report sites anonymously for investigation. They have forwarded 6,232 Red Flag reports to the FBI and the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children.

I have reported those links and will report others if
