Weekend plans and open thread

We're about to update that thermometer again (amount to be announced!), but in the meantime--anyone have any fun weekend happenings going on? My super-fancy plans include trying to convince Monty's Daddy, who moved in a couple of weeks ago, to finish unpacking and get these goddamn boxes out of my house. Not that I'm irritated or anything. Also, I'm going to an early 90s party--time to break out the Cross Colors.

So share your weekend plans, or do some shameless self promotion of your blog or website...

Well, other than reading Feministing... ;)

I have a rather large Christmas party to attend. My friends are throwing their annual bash which will involve food, drink, karaoke and other festivities.

I will be making my famous chocolate cinnamon cupcakes with chocolate ganache icing. :) I've made them in the past and they were a huge hit, in fact one friend has been pleading desperately for them: "You don't know what they DO to me!".

Shameless Self Promo Alert!!
The cupcakes and other fun things can be found here: http://rantingraving.wordpress.com/

Awww, thanks guys!

But I just have work and then finals next week. I plan to write a long whiny entry about having to have a job and the ways in which it sucks in the next couple of days. Seriously, stay away from my blog, people.

:)

I'm going to write a final for my students ;). Then I'm going to finish the edits on my book, review a manuscript on transsexuality, and pull together readings for course packets next year -- topics include the 1970s and sex work in the US. Fun!

I'm going to go see The Golden Compass tonight! Yay! And then, I'll be traveling a few hours to visit a childhood friend who moved to the area a few weeks ago. He's having a housewarming party and I think there just might be some beer pong planned. It's like I'm back in college again!

I'm going to work on some fabulous feminist workshops for middle-school girls through an organization/web site called Think Girl. www.thinkgirl.net

Julie

dancing, tailoring, framing, raw vegan brunching and birthday cake eating before i enter the next bracket.

My friends and I are going to dress up in those black dresses we never get to wear and drink fancy martinis. Then tomorrow I'm going to see No Country for Old Men, which FINALLY came to our theatres!

Shameless self-promotion: http://antichoiceantiawesome.blogspot.com/ , my blog about abortion rights from a clinic escort's perspective. :)

Jessica, you better get his butt in gear re: the boxes very soon, because otherwise they stay forever (I know this from experience :P ).

We're having a holiday party at my place this weekend, complete with chocolate vagina, condoms and a petition to be sent to the Virginia legislators for Lobby Day coming up in January with Planned Parenthood ...

As for shameless promotion - I actually have a question I'd like to ask.

I've been offered a the presidency of the FMLA on my campus (I am already an officer) ...and I am kind of struggling with the decision, because it seems like it's sort of reinforcing patriarchy if I were president. At the same time, I also lack the epistemological privilege of what the plights of women are and the challenges women face.

But at the same time, I feel I can bring my connections with other organizations on campus, and local politicians, to make sure the campus is safer, that birth control and other issues become campus laws, and to sort of make the FMLA a leading and powerful organization on campus.

Thoughts?

Christmas tree! Christmas tree! Christmas tree!

studying.

Baking vegan cookies hopefully, xmas lights with my dad, and volunteer bird banding on sunday. yup the fun life of a 17 year old feminist vegan birdwatcher. :D

ProFeministMale,
That's a hard question and I would feel weird about LEADING an organization representing the rights of a marginalized group I do not personally belong to. But it seems from your interests and involvement and your thoughtful posts, your heart is in the right place and you have a good deal of knowledge and experience to back you up, which is RAD. You're an excellent candidate, but I really do not know what I would chose in your position.

This weekend I am trying to finish a 20 page paper and studying for a fierce final that I am determined to do well on.

Mmm, finishing an efficacy report for Libery Hall women's jail, writing a paper on my internship experience, finishing three grant proposals for the Julian Center, and making my boss cry for not getting my transfer paperwork in on time for me to have a job right when I get to Flagstaff. Grrrr.

I'm having my first professional massage EVER! I'm soooo excited, and I hear she's very good. Since I'm sore from kickboxing, weight lifting, and muay thai, this should be great.

I think I'm going with friends to see The Golden Compass, too.

I'm emceeing the Big Moves holiday show FEAST here in Boston (and selling those Big Moves Calendars!) on Saturday night -- y'all should come on down! It's at All Asia Bar in Cambridge -- craft/gift bazaar at 7pm, show at 10pm. Then I'm driving out early Sunday morning to see my long-distance sweetie for a ridiculously short visit.

ProFeministMale,

First of all, congratulations on being offered this position. I can see how you'd be having a bit of a dilemma making a final decision, but I'm sure you'd make a great president seeing how dedicated you are to the causes. The president of our campus's queer advocacy group is a straight woman and she does a great job. Good luck in whatever you choose.

I have the day off today (yessss) because the boyfriend and I are driving up to Philly for a friend's wedding tonight. We are excited to show off our moves on the dance floor.
Tomorrow we are all staying at another friend's, who lives in the area, and will probably throw it down Philly-style.
Whenever I'm going to be away from my comp for an extended period of time I get anxious because I can't check in w/ Feministing.
Have delightful weekends, all.

And I wasn't trying to be discouraging in my comment by the way. I think you would do an excellent job and its a good opportunity for both you and the organization.

I cannot get away from all this Golden Compass chat...I may have to check it out.

This weekend is devoted to studying for my finals, celebrating the completion of a major semester-long project, and a small wine and appetizer party at my place on Sunday night.

So excited about the rising thermometer, and (to Jessica), the encouragement with the boxes is welcome here, too! My partner and I moved into our new place in JUNE and I still have a ton of boxes filled with books and junk...his boxes were gone so quickly. I comfort myself by thinking "I just have too much wonderful shit, not too many boxes..."

Happy weekend!

ProFeministMale,

One more thing - where do you go to school? I'm at Virginia Tech and it's always great to meet more progressive types in the state.

Tonight I'm treating myself to a trip to Olive Garden. It's snowing again and cheese covered pasta just sounds tasty (mmmm...carbs...) There are rumors of possibly minigolf (indoor place) or bowling later tonight. I know, I'm a wild girl. Tomorrow is a good friend's annual birthday bash where I will drink large amounts of alcohol (and for me, large amounts is probably 2 drinks). Sometime this weekend I'm also hoping to finally finish the curtains I'm making for my mom for Christmas. 45 yards of fabric and 3 spools of thread later and there almost done. Other than that I need to convince my roommate to let me put up a Christmas tree in the apartment. Yes, I know the living room is already cramped, but it's Christmas and I really want a tree. I never realized how important the tradition was to me until I've been face with not having one.

Profeministmale, I say go for it. I only attended two meetings of my campus feminist group because they vilified men so much. Yeah, you're not a woman, but feminism is not confined to only women and nor should it be. Good luck!

Everyone - thanks for your feedback. They help me greatly.

Hi Maddy -

I am at Old Dominion, down in Norfolk. I am planning perhaps proposing the idea of getting all the feminist organizations (independent of their leading, national organizations) from various Virginia campuses together for a conference and to network. Perhaps we can work together on that.

One thing about V-Tech - on the day of the shooting, and before all the details came out, we contacted your women's center to see if we can work on putting out a message about violence against women (as the first victim was female and lots of speculations were going on about a possible relationship with the shooter) - but for some reason, it fell through. :(

If you're on facebook, perhaps we could find each other to keep taps on the feminist movement in Virginia - and thanks for your response. :)

I wish I had something to do this weekend. Tonight I have to pack up my 2 snakes and leopard gecko to stay at my boyfriend's house because we have to flea bomb my house. All day tomorrow I will be working. Sunday I might take the train in to NYC, or go hiking, or quite possibly sit in my boyfriend's house and watch the National Geographic channel. Quite possibly I just might study for finals and finish up some work I have to do. Oh, the joys of being a college student.

Oh, I'd love to shamelessly self-promote a blog: Top Five. We post questions, like, "What were your top five songs of the year?" and then you post your Top Five - it's fun, and you'll find some cool answers! I hope you'll check it out!

Here's my shameless plug!

Hey Everybody- Are YOU interested in reproductive rights issues? Yes? Well then, come on down to www.plannedparenthoodadvocate.org/blog where we've got all the latest news and commentary on the issues of the day! For example, did you hear about South Dakota Governor Mike Rounds? He turned his back on low-income pregnant women by refusing to expand medicaid for low income women! Read about it HERE!. That's right folks, so if you're itching for some reproductive rights news, come on down to plannedparenthoodadvocate.org/blog today!

Weekend plans? Hmm, probably some napping is in order. Perhaps some xmas shopping?

Also, I'm really looking forward to Feministing's expansion. Sounds awesome!

Birthday party! Wooooooo! Also hopefully I'll get some blogging in now that my homework for the semester is all finished.

Shameless self-promotion: I haven't written much of substance lately, but I did post that video from the View about trans children. Oh, and I just wrote a letter to my neighbor to quit dumping in my trash cans, but that's more of a local interest piece...

I will be studying for my finals coming up next week. Exciting, yes, I know. Also, I will be freezing my butt off at the Elite Eight University of Connecticut Men's Soccer game because I'm a member of "Goal Patrol." UC! LET'S GO!

Kmari1222,

I'm also baking vegan cookies this weekend!!

I'm taking them to a potluck to subvert the masses!

If you still need holiday gifts make sure you check out my dear friend Becca's Subversive Cross-Stitch!!

She can also do custom work!

tomorrow i'll be shopping at the Bust Craftacular in NYC!

LARPing!

Costume? Check. Foam sword? Check. Boogie board shield? Check.

It's like D&D except you act out what you're doing instead of rolling dice.

Tonight: Golden Compass (yay!)
Tomorrow: take the senior cat to the vet to find out why he keeps peeing on the furniture. And, record the next episode of http://shadowandjames.com

Work holiday party tonight.

And if any San Diegans want to join in...

Tomorrow: the opening of A Time To Dance La Jolla dance studio.

Sunday: carpooling to a craftastic estate liquidation sale (1149 Chimney Flats Lane, Chula Vista, CA 91915)

Laundry. Maybe helping the boyfriend put up a Christmas tree. Then try and get together with my best friend that I never see anymore since our schedules are so screwy. Nothing terribly exciting. Oh, yeah. And hopefully a haircut because, for the love of Pete it is out of control.

Well, I wore out most of my fun on Tuesday night watching the VS Fashion Show.

Aside from playing music and a few video games (and possibly selecting my gift for Christmas), I won't be doing much on Saturday and Sunday. And typically, December is the down month in Barnwell County, S.C. as we don't have malls like Aiken does.

mm... let's see. Baking. A trip to Costco. Building gingerbread houses with some friends. Taking our cats to have their photo taken with Santa (always hysterically funny and the $$ goes towards a local shelter). Eating the cookies that were baked. And then more cookies.

I work at a music school, and the kiddies are having their winter recital tomorrow. I've got to watch a lot of them get better every week, so watching their recital is like reaping a benefit of parenthood without having do any of the work involved. :)

I too will be seeing the Golden Compass this weekend, as well as checking out the subversive cross-stitch linked above.

And, since it's an open thread and all, I'll also point out something that happened this week that some of my fellow commenters might not be aware of. The University of Colorado agreed to pay $2.5 million in a major sexual harassment suit involving two students who sued under Title IX, charging that they were raped at a football recruiting party: http://nwlc.blogs.com/womenstake/2007/12/no-need-for-mor.html

Knitting, and more knitting. On Sunday I will be baking for Monday's breastfeeding support group.

I will be helping my mom at the annual United Nations Womens Guild Bazaar in Vienna Austria.

Wow, so many of you are doing such awesome, important, interesting things! (And I mean that with all sincerity.) I will be grading essays and tests...the exciting life of a high school teacher! We are, however, having an English department holiday party tonight which always proves to be an excellent time...teachers need to drink, heavily. :)

Have great weekends everyone!

Random self-promotion it is. Either that or rant about the fact that you have a BOYFRIEND. And a dog. And a house.

My blog:
Beyond Feminism

Besides seeing The Golden Compass, I'm packing and putting stuff in storage all weekend. I'm moving to Beijing on Tuesday from good ol' Portland Oregon (I'll miss PDX oh so much). I'll be there till September. Any of y'all feministers (or jezzies, for those that read both) have any tips on living in Beijing or China in general, feel free to email me :) Now I return to the packing and hopefully the 'not totally freaking out'.

Well, I just spent my Saturday turning Girl Guide biscuits into chocolate truffles. The biscuits are past their expiry date and we've been asked to supply the truffles for the national Jamboree in January. We have to make 4000. We've done 2796. I'm not volunteering to help with the rest. I smell like cocoa and butter. Tomorrow I sleep in.

I got married yesterday.

I offer you Excitement! and New Additions to the Store!, my posts about my latest endeavor, The Official Steve the Penguin Store!. The t-shirts are pretty cool, if I do say so myself. :)

ProFeministMale -- Congrats! Can you share the title with another (hopefully female) member? That would make use of your connections/enthusiasm AND make an anti-heirarchical statement...
