Yes, researchers in San Francisco (shocking, I know) have found that a certain compound found in weed slows the rate at which breast cancer spreads.
The study, released in the medical journal Molecular Cancer Therapeutics, discovered that the CBD compound found in cannabis can slow the activity of a gene that causes the spread of cancer cells.Researchers announced the finding with hope that the compound could be part of a non-toxic treatment for metastatic breast cancer.
"Right now we have a limited range of options in treating aggressive forms of cancer," said Dr. Sean McAllister, lead author of the study. "Those treatments, such as chemotherapy, can be effective but they can also be extremely toxic and difficult for patients. This compound offers the hope of a non-toxic therapy that could achieve the same results without any of the painful side effects."
This particular compound won't make you stoned, but they are not recommending smoking tons of weed to get it, since you need quite a bit of it. I guess they will have to eat it. ;)

Good news!
I am a marijuana activist, and there have been many studies that show the benefits of marijuana with regards to cancer treatment. Of course, we all know that it greatly reduces the nausea and such in chemo patients, but did you know that according to studies (in rats, I think), cannabis prevented cancer from not only spreading but even prevented it from beginning to develop in those exposed to cancer-acusing agents. In fact, those who were not exposed to anything at all had a higher rate of cancer growth than those exposed to both nicotine *and* cannabis. (I hope this makes sense - I didn't get a lot of sleep last night and my brain isn't exactly working at full capacity!) If I can find the link to the report, I can post it...
I know a rat is not a human being, but I still think it's a promising statistic! :)
Ooops, I see a typo - I meant "cancer-causing". (It almost looks like I wrote "cancer-accusing!" Ha!)
You just know if this story was about prostate cancer they'd legalize pot before the day was out.
HAH! Omg so true Darth Velma, totally agree.
And I've actually heard of news like this before but never saw an official article on it etc...hooray!
The only reason it was made illegal or is still illegal is because of racism - ie: initially it was blacks and jamicans, etc. who smoked it.
I'm also a bit of an activist on the issue and I like this finding. It is also consistent with other studies that have shown pot helps to treat and prevent other forms of cancer as well.
In fact even the American Medical Association published a study a few years ago that proved that pot does NOT contribute to lung cancer (and this was people who were life-long smokers, defined as 20,000 joints in their lifetime) and may even help to prevent it!
But of course in the US especially, with the "war on drugs", this type of info/research is not promoted and in fact is often hidden from the public.
I mean, it's been clearly proven many times over to be less harmful then alcohol or cigarettes, both of which are legal products, and yet we continue a useless war against it. A shame.
This is great news! I hope this heralds both new breast cancer treatments and more openmindedness on the subject of (medical) marijuana.
I also have a minor nitpick: the post title misspells "Cannabis" :)
Still don't care. Marijuana is an addictive substance like alcohol, like cigarettes and basically I've had a lot of my life fucked over by people who were addicted to pot. If there's a way to use the compounds in marijuana that isn't going to get you stoned, i'm all for that. But until that moment, I hope it stays illegel.
Yay weed!!!
*cough* I mean...
Seriously though, it's good to see that not everyone takes the ridiculous money-suck that is the War on Drugs(tm) seriously.
I've been smoking (vaporizing, actually) for YEARS and I promise you that no one that I haven't specifically diclosed to knows, including my very conservative Christian boss. Nothing else has helped my crippling anxiety disorder. I've tried all kinds of prescription drugs and therapy and self-help and breathing exercises and teas and on and on.
I guess like anything else, if you use it responsibly, I don't think it is harmful at all. There are always going to be some yahoos that abuse it, but there are people that abuse food and Robitussin too, so that's not a good enough argument for me to keep it illegal.
as a two time breast cancer survivor my initial thought was "dang, i knew i should have hung out with the stoners in college".
course i was too whitebread for the stoners, too weird for the whitebread...
I'm sure my college professors will be proud to know that I use my education to correct people's spelling of the word cannabis.
Marijuana is an addictive substance like alcohol, like cigarettes
Neither of which are illegal.
Though my understanding is that pot is not addictive like alcohol and cigarettes, both of which can cause actual physiological dependencies. People can become psychologically reliant on pot, but that's not the same thing.
OK, total nerdy comment:
Great post. But if you want people to be able to search for the post title, you misspelled cannabis.
;)
This sounds great! I'm a pot activist too, and my research on Medical Mary showed that it can be used to cure... um, basically everything. It can have serious, positive effects on disorders and diseases from depression, AIDS, cancer, and glaucoma to the arthritis in my bad hip, and so much more.
And just because you've been screwed over by loads of people that you claim were addicted to pot doesn't mean that it should remain illegal. I'm guessing they got drug money out of you somehow, and I'm going to state the obvious: pot didn't do that. Pot isn't going to take over your life like crack cocaine or something. If you screw people over to get money and buy weed with it, that's all you, baby.
There are about a billion reasons to end criminalization, among them medical use, freeing nonviolent drug offenders, industrial uses of hemp, ending the institutionalized racism of the War on Drugs, economic stuff, making weed safer and cheaper to obtain and use, and the list goes on and on and on.
And there were a lot of reasons (and none of them any good) that weed was criminalized in the first place, not just racism (although that was definitely a big factor). It also has to do with corporate profit margins, underhanded deals, corruption in the government, and a lot of misunderstanding.
Sorry for the huge post!

Thanks not the only thing it slows down :)
Heck yeah! I feel healthier already!
