Blogrolling along...

As Feministing grows, our busy lives make it more difficult for blogroll upkeep. And as we know that updating it is extremely important, we wanted to check with you all about creating a new, shiny blogroll.

As there are many amazing blogs out there, we fear that the blogroll will get so long that visitors will cease to even look at it. So we're thinking about switching up the format a bit. What would you prefer?

A) A smaller but rotating blogroll every month
B) A list of each Feministing editor's favorite blogs
C) A combo of the two -- "Samhita's fave blogs of the month" etc.
D) Other ideas you might have

Also, if anyone wants to bring attention to a blog you fancy (or your own blog for that matter) for the blogroll, email me.

Thanks all!

I vote for C!

another vote for C!

What about something like this?:

Have a big shiny link on the left side saying something like "Click here for Feministing's recommended blogs!"
Then below that you could have a sample of 5-10 blogs (in alpha order) that rotate whenever someone vists the web site or refreshes their browser. Is that possible? I'm thinking of the web sites I work on here at work and we have a bucket of @ 10 rotating pictures per web site. So whenever someone visits the web site (or refreshes), they see a different picture (good for diversity in health care and research).

An additional point about the link to the recommended blogs I describe would be to have it open in a new window, rather than the same window so it does not take the reader away from the Feministing site.

I vote for b!

I'm a fan of C!

Anything you like but just please put me on it!!

I read the blogroll a lot and look through the sites regularly and notice that a lot of them haven't been updated for a few months, often a year or two. Meanwhile I'm blogging several times a week, I reviewed Jessica's book, I guest-blog on the top UK feminist site, the F-Word. I've been featured on the BBC Website, in several national newspapers, I've hosted and been featured in Carnival of the Feminists, Carnival against Sexual Violence, Carnival of Radical Feminism, etc many times and I've mailed a ton of times asking if I can be added to no avail.

So I guess if I have a vote it's for anything that means those blogs that are regularly updated get top billing and somehow, somewhere mine is included.

Please

Please

....

woah shameless self promotion? hehe I blog everyday but I don't expect anyone to add me to their links.

I'd definitely like to see each person's favorites, if only because I think it helps me, as a reader. The sorts of sites each of you read on a regular basis can help us get a better understanding of who you are. It also means that, if a person is really interested in the things you're writing, they can take a look at some of the blogs or sites that inspire you.

If you've got a particularly large list of blogs you want to link, I think something like String Bean is suggesting, where you've got an archive somewhere of all the links you visit, and it randomly displays ten or fifteen of them here, with maybe an option to click over and see the full list.

Is there a law against shameless self promotion? In my world there a law that you MUST engage in shameless self promotion at every opportunity.

I like choice A with a little of C.

For instance you could have a "Greatest Hits" section for all the best blogs that never get old or tired.

And then you could have a "New and Happening" section for the newer ones that deserve a look, but haven't entrenched themselves in the blogosphere yet

I agree with cruella that if a site isn't regularly updated, then it shouldn't get top billing. Maybe have 2 categories, 1 for sites that are refreshed often, and another like "oldies but goodies."

As long as it includes mine...

And other than that, I think if you featured blogs periodically, I would be more likely to troll the blogroll. (option C.)

Self promote away! But better to email Vanessa (vanessa at feministing.com) because she's the gal who's in charge of the revamping of the blogroll.

I am proud to be a pioneer blogger and find my site listed on feministing.com. I have promoted your site across the 2nd & 3rd wave bridge and you promote my site.

Why the question? Have you discovered that the number of hits has diminished? I use your list and refer others to it often as an indicator of feminist presence on the web.

I hope you will reconsider and keep them all. We understand that the ads are necessary for your living and the blogroll is necessary for our commraderie. I am very appreciative.

I kind of wish there was a message board here.

cruella, I just thought the begging was a little excessive.

What about using a link service like delicious? You could have an rss output of some of the links (for instance, newly added ones) on feministing with a link to the full profile which you can break up into tags like "news" "international" or even tags with the submitters name to divide it up into sections.

I like C, but I agree with Zoe, you guys have such a comprehensive blogroll. Maybe C on the frontpage but then also have a separate "feminist resources" page with all the links currently in the sidebar?

I vote C. I'm already way overwhelmed by the long list. *boggles* Or maybe, just break down the sub-categories more, like political feminist blogs, feminism + racial equality blogs, feminism and the law, etc.

I agree with DrkEyedCajn - a blogroll divided into subcategories would be fantastic. I'm sure there are tons of blogs out there that speak to my interests, but I don't have the time to go through all the fab ones you list. So maybe like feminism and the media, women of color, feminism and global issues, queer blogs, etc. I'd also be interested in a spotlight every week or so on a really kickass blog.

I vote for either B or C. Probably B, but I think that maybe you could also do little features when additions are made. Oh, and this is assuming that my blog will stay on. If not, I'll get to work on that D option :)

I agree with the concept of a little old a little new-- ones often updated vs. ones never updated. I love coming to feministing b/c it's always different stuff when I check it! (unless i'm getting on it compulsively, which happens) *_*

I really like String_Bean_Jen's idea.

I really like String_Bean_Jen's idea.

I don't know if it's possible but I think it would be amazing if the blogroll still existed in full somewhere but the column on the main page listed the most recently active blogs from the blogroll. Then even the rarely updated ones would bubble to the top of the list when they had something new on, and you could guarantee that anytime you clicked on something from the list, there would be something new to read. Those blogs that are updated all the time would feature more often. It would even act as an incentive to bloggers to put stuff up and write more...

And I have mailed Vanessa so she can enjoy the benefit of my begging in the privacy of her own email account. but might I add here that she's a very very attractive woman, who I respect at the deepest level.

Me? Beg? Me? Experience shame? NEVER!!

I totally agree with Cruella's last comment: the full blogroll is such a good resource, you should definitely keep it up (and up to date) somewhere, even if not on the main page. The bubbling-to-the-top-when-updated sounds quite good too, very useful for us readers, although I also liked your own option "C".
