Stop Traffic

A great local event (in Columbia, Missouri) that could use some support from like-minded feminists across the country:

On November 10th, 2007, the Women's and Gender Studies Undergraduate Group of the University of Missouri-Columbia will be hosting the "You Could Stop Traffic In These Clothes: Stop Traffic Now Fashion Show." The goal of the fashion show is to awareness about the devastating problem of human trafficking, and we will feature local designers' work at the show. Human trafficking is the violent act of transporting and selling people for sexual exploitation and forced labor. Proceeds from the fashion show event will go to anti-human trafficking work.

The fashion show is part of larger anti-trafficking efforts, which include a three-day conference that will be held at the University of Missouri-Columbia in March 2008. (They've put out a call for papers.) They're also seeking donations of merchandise to sell to at the fashion show, and monetary donations for the show and the conference. More info at www.stoptrafficnow.com.

The feminists at my alma mater have an awesome history of combining creativity with activism, and these events sound great.

Contact info and how to donate, after the jump.

If you are interested in more information or in making a donation please contact Jennifer Kimball, Jennifer@stoptrafficnow.com or 573-875-5565. You can also send donations directly to 4805 Prestwick Court, Columbia, MO, 65203.

I don't see how women who claim to be feminists now act like pigs. Once upon a time women would howl at this same behavior coming from men but now it's ok because we can affor our own little apartment with sex toys to boot!

Er, warp speed? What does human trafficking have to do with sex toys?

Wow, warp speed. You know, once upon a time thoughtlessly criticizing a creative way to raise money and awareness for a really important feminist cause was considered pretty damn rude.

Oh. Wait a second ...

warp speed, are you on drugs? i mean, no one would consider men "pigs" for organizing a fashion show to raise money for anti-human-trafficking efforts. in fact, human rights advocates and feminists alike would have and do laud(ed) anyone, man or woman, for organizing creative fundraising events to stop slavery.

aside from warp speed's repetitive and idiotic comments...

this is awesome and kudos to all the missourians organizing, participating in and supporting this event...

may we all be so directed toward ending slavery in the twenty-first century.

This is great!! So creative and for a very important issue!

*kudos* to University of Missouri-Columbia Women and Gender Studies Group!

In my last year of school some students - both men and women - organized a dance party to raise money for anti-sex-slavery efforts. I would have gone, but by the time I got there it was full (the campus police wouldn't let any more people in because of the fire codes). I still paid the cover charge anyway.
