Wonderbra meets Real Doll fantasy

Nerve's Scanner highlights this creepy mannequin-as-model Wonderbra commercial from the 60s. It kinda makes me want to turn that feminist bra-burning myth into a reality.

I'm just glad that bra commercials don't have theme songs anymore. *shudder*

This seems to be more of a relic of a time when it was unacceptable to show people in underwear on television. It's almost funny, the second it goes from clothed to just skivvies, *boom* she's plastic! It says more about network censorship than it does about Wonderbra's marketing.

Hi, I'm new to posting, but I've been reading this site for a while.

Are you sure this ad is from the 60s not the 70s? All the tv shows I've seen from the 60s were in black and white.

Anyway, I think it's a little late to trash such an old and mostly forgotten ad. Now if this were a Victoria Secret ad on TV now, sure. I hate most of them. But this is pretty tame, especially compared to comics from the 50s and that beer commercial with the robot woman serving a cold one from inside her stomach/sternum area. I hate that commercial. It's so, "woman as beverage dispenser".

twacorbies, yes there was color television in teh 60's and 70's.

I actually it's quite valid to analyze this commercial--especially in terms of the theme song which blatantly tells you that "you worry about how you look and how people look at you" (not sure if that was a direct quote but close enough to be a paraphrase.) This is just one early example of what's led to the body image crisis we're experiencing today. It literally tells you to be insecure in order to get you buy a Wonderbra.

This is just one early example of what's led to the body image crisis we're experiencing today among women. It literally tells you to be insecure in order to get you buy a Wonderbra. It's also telling that the theme song singer is male, along with the announcer... Who are you supposed to be wearing these bras for? Oh, right, not for yourself, but for other people, and who, in particular, might that be? The menz, of course. Completely relevant to this blog and contemporary feminisms.

Oops, sorry, it posted before I could preview and add that last bit.

That bit about the girdle wierded me out.
Deweyeyed: I think that your comment is correct, but also may have a little do do with women and their worries about body image.

It's also funny how the "psychodelic sound" in music, which was once very revolutionary, became exploited for television comercials.
