Ladybloggers and their vicious venom

ThinkProgress quotes conservative pundit Robert Novak:

Novak: I hate to say it, but I think the hatred toward George W. Bush is just mad. I listen to, sometimes in the car radio, on talk shows, and the venom that comes out of the mouths of some of these women, particularly, I’m not trying to be sexist, but they’re so vicious toward him. And I don’t think that really contributes. And also, the bloggers, I don’t read the bloggers very much, but it is really, it’s really vicious.

'Cause there's nothing vicious about what Bush has done to women in this country and around the world for the past six and a half years. Nope. Nothing at all that would warrant that kind of anger. And lord knows no men are never venomous toward Bush.

Bonus: I just love how he even prefaces it with the classic, "I'm not trying to be sexist, but [INSERT SEXIST COMMENT HERE]."

Heh. Reminds me of the old joke, "how does every racist joke start?" Look behind you to left, look behind you to right, lean in and say "OK, wanna hear a joke?"

I'm sure the level of anger that he refers to is present, though I'm also sure completely justified, but to site it as a typically female response is not all that surprising sadly.

I know when I teach, I always try to be conscious of, and responsive to the common and inacurate perception of how "loud and angry" students are perceived, as something intrinsically tied to their representing or not representing patriarchy. In other words, the farther one deviates from the white, male, heterosexual, who has experienced a level of class to allow university attendance to be something expected, the more likely it is that student will be thought as more radical, angry, and loud, whether that is in fact true or not. And nine times out ten, it is not.

Aw, Novak is just feeling left out! What he really wants is for us to talk about him...

No doubt this guy would be unwaveringly polite if the Prez had spent the last 7 years trying to control what men do with their balls while simultaneously chucking all their children into a meat grinder.
Women are just so emotional, after all.

Maybe it's cold comfort, but I believe fewer and fewer people give a flying fuck about ANYTHING Novakula has to say these days. Ever since the Plame outing and his meltdown on CNN he's lost a lot of clout. He's just a bitter old man, seeing his career end largely in disgrace. And he deserves EXACTLY what he gets.

Bush deserves it. I don't know how much blame or credit he personally deserves for what's happened, but he's a figurehead for an organization and ideology that I absolutely despise.

Speaking of sexixt comments, here's a lovely jewel from John Travolta about wearing his Edna Turnblad suit on the set of Hairspray:

"I'm happy to be a man, but I miss being groped," he says, laughing. "Everybody tried to grope me all day. Suddenly having breasts and a big bottom gained me so much attention. Men and women wanted to feel my breasts and feel my bum. I must be a slut because I didn't care. Men were flirting with me and I was being given power I never had before. I found it fascinating. Women have power I didn't know they had."

venomous hussies!! (add eye roll)

Poor little George Bush, having vicious things said about him by women! Horrors! No doubt Novak can count on Ann Coulter, Michelle Malkin, Bay Buchanan and the other Concerned Women for America types to bring back courteous female political discourse.

The projection of the right of its faults onto the left is just so "Today is opposite day" that I have to wonder whether they're all certifiable.

Oh my god, Erin, that John Travolta quote just made me want to scream. I can't even form a coherent breakdown of everything I find wrong with that!

You're so right, Al!

Yes, lord knows there's nothing irrational or venomous about the things the far right has said about Bill Clinton; and continuing to blame him for EVERY GOD DAMN PROBLEM IN THE WORLD 7 YEARS AFTER HE'S LEFT OFFICE is perfectly sane! Not to mention accusing Hillary Clinton of murdering Vince Foster--why, all right-minded people surely believe THAT!

To be fair, when Bob Novak was growing up, the 19th Amendment giving women the vote hadn't been passed yet... or, for that matter, the Constitution itself.

PamelaV,

I so want a T-shirt with "Venomous Hussy" written on it. ;)

Izzy

I'm insulted! I try to be as venomous as possible, but of course, Novak and his kind ignore my work to favor women. Damn affirmative action.

I’m not trying to be sexist...
But you're succeeding.

I don't read them-and they're really nasty! :D

Sorry about that above--my browser froze up and I submitted thrice. oopsie.

Hey girls! If we're the ones doing the most viscious laying-into George Bush then GOOD FOR US!! The bloke has killed hundreds of thousands in Iraq, acts like he's above the law, screwed New Orleans after Katrina, screws the poor, screws women, screws black people,... Lets keep up the good work.

He's not trying to be sexist, it just comes naturally.

This reminded me of when he said he didn't watch The Daily Show and then criticized it. Jon has made fun of him lots of times, but his rebuttal to that was one of my absolute favourites of his monologues:

What's wrong with anger in the first place?

At this point, it is the patriotic duty of every American to be pissed off. Even if they're a woman, and somehow, disqualified from having opinions. *eyeroll*

I keep seeing the accusation of women's "viciousness" more and more. It's clearly a code word that seeks to debarb women's political speech by implying that the women are animalistic as well as hostile. Here, it is combined with "venomous" for good measure.

Personally, I identify my attitude and speech regarding Bush as "righteous indignation."

I have a newly formed attitude toward Novak. That one, similarly, takes exactly two words to sum up.

There is something especially amusing about an accusation of "viciousness" levied against a woman by a man who helped out a female CIA agent as political payback for disobedience to the Bush Administration.

I'm not trying to be vitriolic, but Bob Novak is an intellectually dishonest, thin-skinned, protofascist, Good American jackoff.

Not that there's anything wrong with that, of course.

Well he's right. I am deliciously vicious when talking about President Fuckass. I take it as a sign that I don't have my head stuck up my ass. Unlike many MEN.

That's a really interesting point about the perception of "loud and angry", Al. Anyone who's opposing the status quo is thought of as being more vicious than they are because they're a threat... it makes sense.

I’m not trying to be racist, but old white man sure are dumb.

I love how attacks on Bush are "vicious" and "unnecessary" yet attacks on the left are, well, to be expected, right? Such bullcr@p.

John Travolta said:

"Women have power I didn't know they had."

Well, if certain widespread rumours about Mr T are true, than I can quite understand him not noticing those "powers".

I'm getting really sick of being seen as angry, venomous, shrill, or just plain lacking a sense of humor every time I express an opinion that's unpopular.

This discussion reminds me of that song by Ani DiFranco, Not a Pretty Girl. She says, "every time I say something they find hard to hear, they chalk it up to my anger and never to their own fear." I always remind me of that quote when I'm attacked for being a woman and having an opinion.
