okay, i was going to start quoting and breaking down the article, but just about every line is worthy of being pulled out. it's like a circus in those few paragraphs!

i mean, really, just looking at the beginning, i thought i'd agree with the article - about how corporate diversity training can really just be an isolated cathartic experience for white people where poc's do all the intellectual work and white folks walk away with a brief experience and an overblown feeling of moral accomplishment.

i guess i was wrong.

didn't realize this was written by an organization most proud of its history of exposing "scandals" (such as hillary's health care plan) at the same time as celebrating rush limbaugh's praise for them (hmmmnn... limbaugh hasn't been scandalous at all, right? now... where did i put my pills?)

i mean, wow.

first, i had no idea jane elliott was solely responsible for diversity training in all its varied forms.

next, with statements like "It says something about Elliott's motives that she viewed the extermination of European Jews and the holding of negative opinions about American blacks as morally equivalent," it's pretty hard not to see the inflammatory bias of this "study."

also, this critique is coming from a guy who started an article entitled "911 and the myth of the uncorrupted immigrant" with the phrase "Among the casualties of the Islamic fundamentalist holocaust..."

really... and this cracker thinks it's screwed up to compare the racial history of this country with another extreme example of racial hierarchy for the sake of pointing out the implications of superficial differences, but it's okay to compare a genocide of millions of people to a string of terrorist attacks which have claimed thousands of lives?

in my understanding, elliott's analogy between jews and blacks is that they were being differentiated based on external characteristics, not that genocide was perpetrated against people of color in this country (although that point would stand on its own quite well).

finally, i just can't believe that they wrote 13 pages of repetitive and dramatic nonsense about one exercise among many, as though it were the be all and end all of diversity training...

ugh.

In all seriousness, shit like this makes me want to throw my computer out of the window.

I wonder if there have been any really good studies on this phenomena. Meaning the way in which a privileged groups responds to the demise of their privilege. It seems to create some interesting psychological reactions such as this nonsense about reverse discrimination. Perhapses understanding better what is going on psychologically the helps inspire this unfounded victim mentality might help combat it.

I am sure there have, but being out of academia I probably have missed them.

I also love how this and really most of these sorts of things whether about "The Homosexual Agenda(c)" in schools or the trials and tribulations of the oppressed white male, all mostly rely on antidotes. No rigorous analysis or statistically sound studies, just a series of OMG looks what some teacher in some school did.

It's funny, I don't remember anything about any group of people having a fundamental human right to oppress other groups of people...but they seem so sure that it exists...and is being threatened!

My mind went to a scene akin to A Clockwork Orange, with corporate suit types sitting strapped to chairs with their eyelids propped open and Beethoven playing in the background while they show diversity videos. Soooo realistic.

So I guess their views of diversity are kind of like in Anchorman when he says "I believe Diversity is an old old wooden ship used in the Civil War era."

Man, the "reverse racism" people piss me off almost as much as the "war on Christmas" people. Ooooo, I have to learn that there are people whose lives don't follow the same suburban, protestant, white bread, 2.5 kids and a golden retriever pattern that mine did! That's threatening to my ego-centric world view and means you're oppressing me! Racism! Oh my god, take a chill pill, and learn that other cultures are wonderful things to have around. Otherwise we'd have no reason to drink Coronas and margaritas on May 5th, no sushi, no jerk chicken, no Brazilian bikinis, and no take out chinese.

Oh my head...I decided to meander over and read the actual report--I only got through about 6 pages before my head practically exploded off my shoulders.

As a former HR officer for an int'l investment bank, I facilitated management training programs and diversity training sessions. Invariably, the participants who heaved the sighs of irritation, and mocked the entire training process were the staff and management who could have benefited the most from such training. In fact, I think the photos in the 'Special Report' may have been of participants I worked with!
