Doesn't he have interns who can fact-check for him? 'cause, really, with all the African-American or Latino or white supremicist or homophobic or misogynist-in-general gangs out there, lesbian gangs aren't any more than a really small blip on a really big radar screen.

How lovely that the first incident Bill speaks of (where a man harassed, threatened, and physically attacked a group of women who dared to fight back) has turned into a "beware of the killer lesbians!" thing instead of a "how about men STOP FUCKING HARASSING WOMEN ON THE STREET BECAUSE, NO MATTER WHAT THEY THINK AND NO MATTER WHAT THEY'RE TOLD, THEY DO NOT HAVE THE RIGHT TO PHYSICALLY INTIMIDATE WOMEN WHO ARE DOING NOTHING BUT DARING TO OCCUPY PUBLIC SPACE AND ONE DAY, WE MIGHT JUST DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT" thing. It'd also be nice if these assholes would say something like "well what did he think was going to happen, what with him walking around in a known gay area and hurling homophobic and sexual threats at women? It sounds to me like he brought it on himself!" since they're so fond of using similar arguments to claim that women who were raped asked for it.

Another aside: the Pink Pistols that old Bill speaks of do indeed exist. Their purpose in creating a lesbian gun club is not to "commit crimes," however, it's to PROTECT THEMSELVES AGAINST GAY BASHING. Aren't republicans the ones who like to run their mouths about the importance of carrying firearms for personal protection? Yeah.

SoyMilk, that was the first thing I thought of when I saw this post, the women who were harrassed and attacked by a guy in NYC and then THEY were charged with crimes for fighting back. Like, ha ha, funny story about crazy men making shit up, except, oh hey here's some real women who have come to real harm because of killer-lesbians-of-color-on-the-loose propaganda. I wanted to just laugh at this, it's so ridiculous, but my parents watch Fox News, and, like many Americans, they believe that what's on Fox News (or any news channel, for that matter,) is indeed news, and therefore true. It wasn't funny when my mom started crying and threatened to call the cops on my girlfriend. It's all fun and games until somebody's life gets f***ed up.

My mother is another person who watches Bill O. and Fox News, and believes they're really "fair and balanced"...because they say they are.
My theory is that the older generations grew up with news broadcasts that actually reported facts, and so they've been socialized to trust what they see on the news. The entire concept of "spin" seems to escape them--why would "the news" lie to us?
It just never occurs to them to question it.

Ooooooook.... Interesting that they would label the caption as Lesbian Gang Epidemic. Also, I believe that first video clip was of a girl fighting another girl in high school because her boyfriend was cheating on her with another girl. I would not expect anything less from (crappy) Fox News. Also, I am glad that Bill talks about the 'important' issues, again wouldn't except anything less coming out of his mouth.

The scary/disgusting thing about O'Reilly is that he is neither credulous nor an idiot. Stories like this are chosen entirely for the affect they will have on his target audience; the actual truth values of his stories is irrelevant. In addition to being an ideologue, O'Reilly is motivated by ratings. The story may appear ludicrous to those of us outside his sphere of influence. But, that little extra dose of homophobia he's instilled in his audience is no laughing matter.

I would agree that more hype was put into this story than was warranted. A spokesperson for GLAAD was on Bill O'Reilly's show this week to talk about this story. You should really look into it. Was a good discussion.
