Homophobic Ass of the Day.
Apparently a senior church of England bishop has made an official announcement that a onslaught of floods which has been causing damage across the UK isn't a an overabundance of precipitation resulting in shitty weather, but actually the wrath of the almighty smiting the nation for being too gay-friendly. I should have known!
As the Nerve headline says, "What If Gay Sex Could Actually Cause it to 'Rain Men'?"

Someone's gotta point out that it COULD BE the anti-reason, pro-war, bigoted fundies who are provoking god's wrath.
Or, you know, it could be global warming like we've been telling them.
I was hoping that the Pat Robertson/Jerry Falwell/Ted Haggart types were just something we could attribute to backwoods teaching or bad genes.
Maybe we should thank him for making American loonies look slightly less awful. Good (bad actually) to know hate and lack of reasoning is a world-wide problem.
It's the end-times! Oh no! I wish the rapture were real so these people would be gone. And while we are at it, let me quite a Bible verse:
You see the speck of dust in your brother's eye but not the plank in your own eye?
According to this guy's religion, people are not supposed to judge others.
If only this was true. We could all work on the draught, in firehouses and in irrigation for the Third World. But all the water in the universe could not wash away the fear that homophobes thrive on.
Oh bleagh.
I can't think of anything else to say. Just bleagh.
Bleagh indeed. :/
I disagree with this Bishop’s claim, and may his God strike me down if I am wrong……
…..
Oh shit, I forgot that God is not real.
My sock puppet Pootles on the other hand………
Bow down sinners, and face the sock wielding righteous! Starting with you, heretic Graham Dow! Let the sock-based purgation begin!

I don't think it's necessary to malign ALL people of faith, just become there are some fucked up, whacked-out peeps in the bunch. As with ANYTHING (like, say, democracy), just because some people completely screw it up, doesn't mean we need to can the whole idea. Religion CAN be used for good, and many times it has been. Just sayin'.

I live in the middle of Fundiestan and spent the last three days shoveling mud and sand from all the flooding. Maybe this bishop would like to explain that one.
What I don't understand is how hate-mongers like this bishop can read the Bible and see a message of hate. Even someone with a basic knowledge of the Bible would realize that hatred is un-Christian. My kingdom for a day when Christians once again speak of "Love thy neighbor" and "Turn the other cheek."
Someone should remind these preachers of hate that the golden rule is not "Do unto others" it is "Do unto others as you would have done unto you."

Somehow, I managed to skim through without seeing much besides "homophobic ass of the day" and then "what if gay sex could actually cause it to 'rain men'?" and laughed and laughed. The rest of the story is NOT funny (and ridiculous that people 1. think these things and 2. say these things out loud expecting not to be called bigots)
Actually, if he's right, this could be a great boon for gay rights: Bow before the awesome power of Teh Gay, all you straight people! Fear us! Grant our demands or we will have even more butt-sex and bring the wrath of the Almighty down even harder upon your heads!
Im sorry Law Fairy, you are probably right. However I have seen people of "faith" malign anyone with a differing view before too many times to care about their feelings on the subject now.
Why should I spare the feelings of someone whos very belief most likely says I am going to be tormented for an eternity for simply having the audacity to take a different view than them. (Im an atheist though, not gay, so this is neither here nor there really, so Ill just shut up now).
And Narc, I think thats a pretty good idea, holding us all hostage and turning the tables on the nutjobs who believe it. However, I think if its classed as "teh lordZ wrath" then most of them probably wont care about dying. They’ll probably even be happy about it. Whereas I am the type to run around waving my hands in the air, laughing maniacally because we finally dont have to waste anymore time on this rock!
Puhleaze. Not even biblical. Of the top of my head I can remember the rainbow from years of bible school lessons; promise God will never flood the earth again out of wrath or as a punishment. So that leaves us with global warming then, doesn't it? And isn't global warming a kind of huge indication of us failing to be "good stewards of the earth" like God directly commanded? Better not face that, it takes acceptance of responsibility. Just blame the gays, everyone else does. *headbang*
God is a Black Lesbian named Gaia and she is punishing the planet for our sins of destroying her.
Every SUV, every coal fired power plant, every clear cut forest the slash and burn treatment of the rain forest and strip mining of the oceans are major sins and Gaia is trying to protect herself.
But I am always amazed how the viciously mean desert skygod misogynists and homophobes never view their own viciously evil abuse of other human beings as being the"sin" and always see these as signs they should be even more hateful.
Sure all the mayhem isn't really a Divine response to the Libby pardon, er, commutation?
That is horrid! Any priest, in any religion, perverting the faith and scripture in this manner is going way beyond overboard.
Close-minded fool. I am so very disgusted... I can only imagine what natural disaster he might blame on the transgendered.
Since I can't find anything constructive to say I am shutting up, something this idiot should have done.
I really, REALLY despise it when asshats like this guy make any religious people who AREN'T utter bigots look bad. Especially when in doing so they blame innocent people for something they had no control over.
tucpnewt -- what a great image: the rainbow of god promising not to flood the earth ever again has become a symbol of gay people, who are in turn now being blamed for a flood of god's wrath. And it all comes full circle.
A bit off topic, but if anyone's interested, there's a great online novel about the rapture. Here's the byline:
"Imagine if everything the Religious Right believes about the End Times is true, except the Rapture doesn't take them and the antichrist turns out to be their favorite politician . . . That's the story of The Event"
It's great. Find it at micklasalle.com
Geh. This pisses me off. I'm in the Anglican Church in Canada, and in a diocese where the bishop got in trouble for going ahead and blessing same-sex marriages.
Then I see shits like this guy making us look worse than we already do (thanks to stupid votes 21-19 against SSM... still ticked over that one).
There are people within his organization that completely disagree, including most of my own parish and probably most of my diocese. We're out here, and we're not being quiet about it anymore, and I for one am willing to see my church split over this issue, if that's what it takes.
Dammit. I need some rain in my yard. I thought god was ominscient. He must know that I supported same-sex marriage (even worked on the campaign, here in Ontario). Why do some places get flooded and I get nothing?
Is it because I'm straight?

Nah, it’s because God has lousy aim. He’s a bit rusty, you see, after nearly 4,000 years. Till He gets in some more smiting practice, look out!
OMG! How tired am I of all these religious "higher ups" condemning homosexuals (and places that welcome and support them) by blaming everything from the rain to 9/11 on them? Seriously. I grew up in the church, still consider myself a spiritual person, and am thrilled at the gay community my city has - diversity rocks! I believe the Bible (which religious zealots will put so much stock into) says something along the lines of "judge not lest ye be judged." Priests lately haven't had the best reputation... Wouldn't it be nice if everyone just recognized everyone else as a human being? I'd like to think that if we've incurred God's wrath, it's because we have a president who keeps using His name to justify and messy and needless war. But that's just me.
...well, that explains the dripping coming from my bedroom ceiling...
