I read this post and then checked World's Fair (on scienceblogs) and was greatly amused by this:
"Bush Apparently Supports End to War
Category: Ethics Palace: Where ethical questions go to live or die
Posted on: June 20, 2007 9:56 AM, by Benjamin Cohen
So I surmise from a half-heard radio report this morning. On my way into town today I heard part of a story where Bush was said to have stated (I'm paraphrasing, from memory) taxpayers should not have to support the destruction of human life.
I can only assume this was a comment in reference to the Iraq War. What a remarkable reversal of policy! Does he now support ending bombings? Why isn't everyone talking about this?"
god i love those ads. but that is easily the best one yet. i love being a new yorker!
The only ad I ever see is on the subway: "Your closet is so shallow it makes Paris look deep." I thought it was just another silly ad campaign trying to cash in on celebwhoregossip culture, but this is fantastic!
Broadsheet also has an interesting report about the MMS ads.
not to rain on any parade here, but still. why is it "your" closet space and "her" right to choose? cause women don't buy storage space? media that assumes a male audience should only get two and a half starts at most
I posted on these ads on Monday at LGM (http://lefarkins.blogspot.com/2007/06/and-now-for-something-completely.html). The comments were interesting, but no one pointed out the "your" "her" thing....
On the flip side, if it were targeted at women, it would appear that all we care about is extra closet space because we shop so much . . .
I like it.
I'm not sure about the whole "your" and "her" thing. "Your" can mean one person talking to just one other person or a whole group of people. "Her" is just referring to something that belongs only to a female. I think they wanted to save space by saying "your" because it means the same as "Jen's, Dave's, Leo's, Lily's, etc."
I don't think it was intended if it is existant.
This is so cool it makes my cynical self wonder if it's not fake. Anyone know the location of this sign?
Minouette, no, actually he was talking about the bill he vetoed today on loosening restrictions on stem cell research. The sickest quote from his WH press secretary to cover Bush's ass was: "The president does not believe it's appropriate to put an end to human life for research purposes," Snow said. "That's a line he will not cross." All I can think is, he cannot be so seriously ignorant to think that the stem cells left over from in vitro are actually going to develop into human life, can he? They're THROWN AWAY! Omg, it makes me so mad and so sad for people who really need cures that could come from this research. Stupid piss-faces.
*sigh*
"Stupid piss-faces."
I am not religous, but that deserves an AMEN!
I really don't understand a "culture of life" that puts so much value embryos and fetuses but doesn't seem to give a shit about all the dead Iraqi children.
...Bush was said to have stated (I'm paraphrasing, from memory) taxpayers should not have to support the destruction of human life.

He's pro-embryo and pro-uterus controlling, but certainly not anything close to "pro-life". This point was brought up on The Daily Show a good while back when the Iraqi "casualty" count was probably half of what it is now, and his response was something along the lines of "sorry, it's war" and he basically just took another question. So apparently American non-sentient embryo>Iraqi children.
I find it absolutely amazing that people who claim to be pro-life for the most part don't do much in the way of supporting programs that help people who are already born. It's so hypocritical.
The ad: WOW.
The squick about "your" and "her": Uh, wow? Seems trying a leeeetle hard to find sexism there. "You" is pretty easily plural/inclusive. "Her" is important to make the specific point. I think it was masterfully done. And GUTS.
I agree.
"Minouette, no, actually he was talking about the bill he vetoed today on loosening restrictions on stem cell research. "
Oh yes, I realize, as did the man who posted the comment, that Bush did not actually support an end to the war, I just thought it was a similarly witty way of pointing out the irony of how those in power think a fetus (or even parts of what might have been a fetus) are more valuable than people, who happen to be say, Iraqis (or, women who choose not to be forcibly pregant for that matter).
I can see the issue re. "your"/"her", but personally, I'm just impressed when people dare make these allusions (because it's rare in pop culture to get any hint of this type of criticism).
I took the "your/her" thing as pretty non-sexist. Obviously men's right to choose isn't going anywhere, because they don't get pregnant. And I figured that "your" was a general word, implying that the customer's closet space is too small; hence, the need for a storage space.
"Your" could indicate a woman who isn't looking for an abortion but still feels for another woman who is.
I hope that made sense.
I don't think they were going for sexism, here. If it said, "your closet space is shrinking as fast as your right to choose" then I am not sure it would make as much sense; at least not to the men reading the ad. But women and men can read, "Your (Sarah or John or Betty or Tom) closet space... as (and woman's) right to choose". Maybe it would be better if it said, "Your closet... as women's right to choose" but I either way, I am thrilled at such a bold ad in this world.
