Take Back America: Hillary Clinton Clinches the French Canadian Vote (oops)

I was just kidding yesterday when I mentioned the songs each of the presidential candidates played. But, CNN this morning had an entire story about Hillary Clinton’s campaign song “finally revealed. What’s a stronger word than pathetic? Though, I do have to say that the use of a Celine Dionne song entertains me. When I went to Montreal last year, every tour I went on mentioned her. I think I sprained my smirk muscles.

Anyway, Clinton’s actual speech. She starts off with the information that Bush is planning to veto the stem cell research bill today. Asshole. That’s what I call him, not what she said. But, you can tell she was thinking it. She also gives some of the progressive political orgs a shout out. She also talked about the recent Supreme Court pay discrimination case.

Side note: It seems Clinton also has the outlaw vote, as a bunch of her supporters in the crowd just got their signs taken away.

She talks about all of the people in America that are invisible to the current administration. Poor people, black people, old people, students, soldiers, pretty much everyone. Oh, and she wants enlist young people to public service, including creating a public service academy like the military academies. That was popular with the crowd. Looks like enrollment would be good.

Side note 2: There is a fair amount of heckling, but I can’t quite understand what they’re saying. Probably still bitching about Nader from yesterday.

Huge props to Clinton for taking the Iraq booing in stride, and "I love coming here every year" sarcasm. I wish there was more sarcasm coming out of campaigns. It's my second language.

Side note 3: This must be going well. The guy next to me has an Obama sticker on his computer, but just joined in a standing ovation.

I skipped Hillary to sleep in, so I don't know where these sign-holders were, but the signs are kept to the sides and out of the middle primarily so people don't block the view for one another/the cameras.

French-Canadian girl here: the Canadian news reported on this a whole bunch too. You all can have Celine, and frankly I lost a little support for Hilary for that choice. The song was commissioned by Air Canada to promote their new (crappy) customer service plan.

Which Celine Dion song did she end up using? *goes on CNN to check*

I like Celine Dion. >.>

Someone else reminded me that Clinton used a variation on "we gave the Iraqis a chance to fix their country, they didn't...so now we have to pull out." line for why we should leave.

I don't have the exact transcript, but the text was very clear "We gave the Iraqis a chance to fix their country...and they didn't take that opportunity."

It's a very neoliberal view I thought...that particularly logic? I was *surprised* to hear her use it.

CNN is reporting that CodePink and others booed Sen. Clinton, did you notice that?

thakns for the updates, btw, they are great! Wish I was there!

I wasn't at Take Back America, but I'm pleased to read that Sen. Clinton's mention of a U.S. Public Service Academy received great applause. The Academy is a bold idea with far-reaching potential. While Clinton has been a leader on the Academy, the idea to build it extends far beyond her or her campaign.

I hope you and your readers will find out more about the grassroots movement behind the Academy by visiting:

Thanks!
